Immigrants Rising: Archive of Coverage
In December 2005, the US House of Representatives voted to adopt the harshly anti-immigrant House Resolution 4437, prompting a wave of opposition that has grown into the largest display of decentralized, coordinated protest in US history. The protests successfully stalled the adoption of parallel legislation in the Senate and have grown into a call for the full enfranchisement of all immigrant workers. Mobilizing continues to build a general strike on May 1, 2006. Organizers say they seek real immigration reform that is comprehensive, respects civil rights, reunites families, protects workers, and offers a path to citizenship for the current undocumented and future immigrants to the US. We reject the scapegoating of immigrants in the same way we refuse to blame Muslims, the poor, public sector workers, women, and other victims of this recession. We blame the recession on those who caused it, the most wealthy 1%. The 1% want immigrants to have zero rights so that they are easily exploitable and can be paid slave wages, thus lowering the wages of all working people. Originally the Act was signed into law by Governor of Arizona Jan Brewer on April 23rd 2010 and it came into effect today ninety days after the end of the legislative session. Shortened to either Arizona Senate Bill 1070 or SB 1070 it is otherwise known as the 'Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighbourhoods Act.' Members of local collective B Media staged a 'Wedding of the Doomed' in front of the media and demonstrators to symbolise the marriage between the local law enforcement agencies and ICE (Immigration and customs enforcement). The marriage wouldn't have been right without some community intervention, which ended up stealing the show and standing up against the marriage of ICE and the Police.
*Partial justice is no justice at all! Despite Judge ruling to block parts of SB 1070, racial-profiling, raids, deportations and the militarization of the border will continue unchallenged. This is why today we shut down Interstate 19 (I-19)* *Sigue en espa**ñol abajo:* *DIRECT ACTION DISRUPTS ARIZONA RACISM!* [ Arizona Indymedia link: http://tinyurl.com/22n8vks ]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 27, 2010 FULL-PAGE AD COMPARING NAZI TREATMENT OF JEWS TO ARIZONA'S NEW IMMIGRATION LAW 1070 TO APPEAR THIS WEEK IN THE PHOENIX NEW TIMES NEWSPAPER; CALLS FOR A REGIME CHANGE IN ARIZONA See R.E.M.'s "AZ1070" ad at http://www.responsibleeducationandmedia.org/az1070.htmlPHOENIX, AZ: In response to the signing of Arizona Senate Bill 1070 last week, a new ad is set to run this week in Phoenix depicting Governor Jan Brewer and Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Nazi uniforms with the message, "We Need A Regime Change." The ad, placed by the nonprofit group Responsible Education and Media (R.E.M.), will appear in the Phoenix New Times beginning Thursday, April 29. The SB 1070 is a controversial new anti-immigration law signed by Brewer on April 23, making illegal immigration a state crime and allowing law enforcement officers to inquire into the immigration status of any person within the state. Individuals found to not have valid identification are subject to arrest and may be charged with violating this new law. Read More >>> Racist Arizona: report back from Phoenix protests Friday-Sunday 4/23-25Brief notes from the protests I am from Eugene and drove to Phoenix to protest SB 1070, a law that was passed on friday which now makes it illegal to be in Arizona if you do not have papers. There are supposedly 500,000 undocumented workers, motsly from Mexico, in the state. The rallies were large for a conservative city like Phoneix, mostly Hispanic, but with a few white people. Friday was a youth rally and youth march; mostly highschool students walked ten miles, from Glendale to the capitol. There was a twenty-four hour vigil on saturday, and huge crowds on Sunday to hear congressmen Grijalva and Guttierez speak. Read More >>> Arizona's Attack on ImmigrantsArizona's recently passed law as of Friday allows police to racially profile and sets dangerous precedent for the rest of the country. How we should respond. Arizona has opened the way for Gestapo tactics to enforce immigration laws. As of Friday, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed the toughest law against undocumented workers or "illegal immigration" in this country. The law once it takes affect would make it a crime to be in the state illegally and requires police to check suspects for immigration paperwork. The law will clean up everything law enforcement has not been able to do in the past few years obligating officers to determine immigration status often through racial profiling or if they have "reasonable suspicion" that someone is an "illegal immigrant". A person could be subject to an immigration check without breaking any laws and charged with state trespassing. Arizona has become the leader of anti-immigration legislation and a laboratory for anti-immigration measures that sets a dangerous precedent for the rest of the country.

Arizona is the testing ground for right-wing immigration policy. If we cannot stop it there, we'll see similar activities spread across the country. It is crucial that we raise awareness and collect resources in support of the communities terrorized by the Maricopa Sheriff and his volunteer posses.
We will hear from Portland delegates that attended the gathering, the march, and collected testimony from people affected by Arpaio's terrorism. We will also come together to agree on strategic actions that the Portland community can take to stand in solidarity with the Phoenix community and also show the country that we will not tolerate hateful policies anymore. Come hear local activists report back from Phoenix, Arizona. Stop the hate! Stop Joe Arpaio! Stop ICE raids! When: March 10th, 7-9pm Where: VOZ 1131 SE Oak

The Revolutionary Anti-Imperialist Movement- Denver and anti-racist comrades held an anti-racist picnic, taunt racist Minutemen and disrupt their meeting. The Colorado Minutemen, a virulently racist anti-Mexican group, held a meeting at the Englewood Library on Saturday, February 21st . RAIM-Denver became aware of the meeting less than a week in advance and was eager to oppose it. With little time to coordinate and promote a large protest, we decided instead to hold a picnic. RAIM-Denver was serving up non-alcoholic wine, cheese, and the best part: crackers.
RAIM-Denver was joined by a couple Denver-area anti-racist comrades, making our picnic only a handful in size. That didn't stop us from getting our point across. As was done at Denver's last confrontation with the Minutemen, klan hoods were offered to the racists as they entered the building. We made some banners also. RAIM-Denver understands that the U.S. Southwest is land stolen from Mexican and Indigenous peoples. Thus RAIM comrades proudly displayed the Mexican flag. Other comrades held a banner that read,"If you don't like Mexico, get out!" http://raimd.wordpress.com |
