Save Portlands Open Reservoirs - Friday Vigils Start

From the open publishing newswire: Friday Vigils to Save Portland Open reservoirs starts on the Hawthorne Bridge every Friday at 4:00 PM

"Today [Friday] we will be back on the Hawthorne Bridge, Westside at 1st and Madison. We will have signs talking about the covering of the reservoirs and the rate increases etc. We should be there about 4:00 PM until about 5:15 PM, this wimp wears out fast on the bridge, but we make some noise and try to have fun. All are welcome and the only rule is be proud of what you put on your sign; no other rules. If you get a chance stop and say hello to a person who is living on the street, they are having a tough time and could use some cheer; just say Hi."

report from this old vet

Storm The Battle with votes and calls From the open publishing newswire: This was a busy week with the politicians, we attended a Policy Board for Oregon Health on August 6th to blast them about not granting the variance the city and Commissioner Novick had requested. This was a long meeting, about 3 hrs. of process, I knew I was at the wrong station. This group had nothing to do with the covering of the reservoirs. They were dealing with things like, "Coordinated Care Model Alignment workgroup" but what the hell since I was there, and spent a few hours listening to them why not move to plan "B." Near the end about 3:45 they had public testimony and I talked about the homeless, the deaths on our streets and the lack of programs that would help the most vulnerable among us. They wanted to talk process, I talked about real life. It was good, and by the expressions on the doctor's faces they are not used to being told things, they are used to telling each other how wonderful they are and how wonderful it was going to be someday! These are good people but we need much more action and less process.........

Today we will be back on the Hawthorne Bridge, Westside at 1st and Madison.

Portland City Council Meeting

we should always be watching From the open publishing newswire: very confusing???

January 9, 2013 at city hall, all five of the members were present and for the most part, paying attention. Commissioner Fish was a little late but did not miss much. Actually, there was not much to deal with during the 90 minute meeting, except this item:

"TIMES CERTAIN

*21 TIME CERTAIN: 9:30 AM - Authorize the Bureau of Transportation to acquire certain permanent and temporary rights necessary for construction of the SW Boones Ferry Rd - SW Stephenson St Project, through the exercise of the City's Eminent Domain Authority (Ordinance introduced by Mayor Hales) 15 minutes requested."

This request did turn interesting; it did go a lot longer than 15 minutes as requested, and there were a number of citizens who objected to the limited way the city was going ahead with this project. One woman said straight out that the change will not deal at all with the biggest problem they have and that is speeding. I was a little confused by this because I thought this was a simple problem that was going to be finally answered by the city--wrong!

This was presented as an emergency which means that you have to get all the members to agree or they would have to do a second reading and more discussion. The cost of this project is not cheap, in the range of over a million bucks. [...]

The protest begins 1:00pm, at Portland's Holladay Park 28-Oct-2012 12:09

Portland, Oregon Prepares for Pre-Election Anti-Austerity Protest

From the open publishing newswire: On November 3rd Portland community and labor groups will declare "enough is enough" by organizing a first for the U.S. — a large demonstration against government austerity cuts.

The protest takes aim at the governmental policy of austerity — where public deficits on a city, state, and federal level are being addressed by "cuts only" budgets, resulting in continued de-funding of education, health care, transportation, and other vital public services, combined with an attack on public sector workers. [...]

If the Portland protest is large enough, it will have succeeded in educating the community about the special interest, pro-corporate agenda behind the national and local austerity cuts, while also showing practical alternatives to austerity: making the rich and corporations pay for the crisis they created.

Ideally, the Portland demonstration will be the beginning of a working-class coalition of labor and community groups with the potential of growing into a powerful European-like movement capable defeating not only city and state austerity budgets, but working with other cities to change social policy on a national level.

The protest begins 1pm, at Portland's Holladay Park on November 3rd.

call to action

From the open publishing newswire: Let's make some noise my wonderful colleagues and friends

Flags: Next Wednesday just before our 5 shits meet and call it a City Council will you join me in flying the flags of justice and peace.

I will bring the Vietnam Veterans Flag, will you bring your peace flags to let the City Council know that they our representatives and not the Business Alliance Reps. Cameron has extended his fast past the 30 days and that has me concerned. He has upped the ante and so should we. Will you join me or just stay home and do nothing? Many of you cannot take time off from work but some of you can, join us for one hour of hell raising. Pots and pans, drums, horns and mega phones are the order of the day.

I will go into the Council at 0930 and sit up front with a t-shirt that reads "RESIGN SAM, FISH." ... Time to make some noise, want to take a ride on the Justice side? Meet up at 0830 7/11/2012 in front of City Hall. ~Joe

PS can't come, call the council and tell them to house the people who are on the streets, when they tell you how much they are doing, tell them to do more!!!!

Using the TPP to Renegotiate and Expand NAFTA

From the open publishing newswire: "Trade deals such as NAFTA and now the TPP are being used to smuggle through a new set of transnational corporate rights, trapping nations in a web of treaties that further trump their own laws. All too often, these agreements fail to deliver on the promise of prosperity and only serve to accelerate the path towards economic enslavement. Globalization has meant sacrificing self-sufficiency and sovereignty for foreign dependency which is a sure path to world government."

Both Canada and Mexico have been invited to join the U.S., along with other countries already engaged in negotiations which will deepen trade and economic ties within the Asia-Pacific region. Such a deal would surpass NAFTA in size and scope. The U.S. led talks which have been criticized for their secretive nature, could be used to update aspects of existing trade pacts among member nations. This would provide the perfect opportunity for a backdoor renegotiation of NAFTA without officially having to open it back up.

RNC & DRC Protests

From the open publishing newswire: It's not too early to plan to join protests in Tampa (rnc august 27-30) & Charlotte (dnc september 3-6). Protests will be fierce; protests MUST be fierce. The two parties are rotten to their innermost layers. And the political process is owned, but not by you & me. In lieu of being in those two cities, solidarity protests are indicated for everywhere, ... everywhere that people choose to take back control of the country, away from our vile out-of-control oligarchic federal government.
