You Don't Use A Microscope To Find The Cow That's Left The Barn

"You just want my milk. I'm outta here. Bye bye!" From the open publishing newswire: It's time to put the discussion of our national priorities and federal budget on track and that will require some perspective.
Witnessing the drama unfold as to whether the government will shut down or whether Congress will break the current gridlock is like watching clowns at a circus engaged in a water balloon fight.

Michele Bachmann actually said something useful in an interview I watched today on MSNBC. [...]

The Tea Party claims its candidates were charged by those who elected them to cut $100 billion from current fiscal year spending. Somehow that has been reduced to $61 billion and now the debate is where the reductions should be made. Republicans have made it clear they are across the board for cutting anything which is beneficial to middle and working class citizens. I won't bother even going into all of the programs they have demonized over the years and have on their hit list. Everyone already knows.

The point is that in the two weeks Congress has been bickering over the $61 billion, the country has borrowed three times that just to keep afloat. Let me add that in those two weeks $48 billion of that total borrowing was just interest, i. e. debt service on the debt.

Something is seriously wrong here.

Response to Sam Adams' JTTF Proposal

From the open publishing newswire: A clear analysis of major problems in Mayor Sam Adams' JTTF proposal.

The draft JTTF resolution does a very good job trying to balance the interests of FBI with local interests in the abstract given that proposal choses to entangle the PPB with the JTTF once again. It is a really tremendous first effort and shows its roots in the diversity, creativity and populism of Portland and the Mayor's office. Certainly, a proposal not to coordinate with the JTTF except to receive information would be the more wise choice for safety and privacy of our citizens. Notwithstanding the poor choice to engage with the JTTF at all, there are several fatal flaws in the proposal as it stands which will ultimately fail again to protect the civil rights and liberties of Portland and Oregon citizens. Unfortunately, the proposal in its current form amounts to a return to business as usual for the PPB and JTTF. This draft is just the a kinder, gentler Old Emperor in new clothes that are not so transparent.

US Rep Blumenauer birddogged for AIPAC support

banner being floated AIPAC <-- Enviro Justice --> From the open publishing newswire: The keynote speaker at the 2011 University of Oregon Public Interest Environmental Law Conference , US Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), caused controversy as members from the audience protested his involvement in both the acclaimed environmental law conference and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Oregon chapter meeting. Congressman Blumenauer served as the keynote speaker for both organizations in the same weekend.

banner being floated AIPAC <-- Enviro Justice -->
Halfway through Congressmen Blumenauer's speech promoting Portland's bicycle culture, protesters floated a 5 x 10 foot banner to the ceiling of the University of Oregon ballroom. The banner read "AIPAC" with an arrow pointing backwards and "Enviro Justice" with an arrow pointing forward. The group claims that being in lockstep with AIPAC contradicts environmental values.

Literature distributed by the protesters cited the environmental impacts of the occupation including the number of Palestinian olive trees uprooted by the Israeli military since the second intifada (over 500,000) and information about the Israeli bombing of the sewage treatment plant in Gaza resulting in raw sewage contaminating the Mediterranean Sea.

Suspended over the audience with 23 helium balloons, the banner remained throughout the presentation and onto the next day until it floated down on its own. The conference organizers censured audience questions during the Q & A to prevent protesters from addressing what they call "social and environmental justice contradictions."

Congressmen Blumenauer received further protest when he arrived at the AIPAC meeting on Sunday in Portland. Over three dozen protesters held signs protesting Israeli actions in the West Bank and Gaza and constructed a mock separation wall.

You Must Choose

Gaza! From the open publishing newswire: You must stand against oppression no matter who is involved.

We should demand from our elected representatives that all members of AIPAC, (American Israeli Public Affairs Committee) take a loyalty oath to America; outrageous you say? Let me tell you a story. The Israeli Supreme Court is now considering a requirement for all non-Jews in Israel to take a loyalty oath to the state of Israel. Not so outrageous as you thought. This would be just like Christians demanding all non believers take a loyalty oath. This is a horrible way to exclude people from the political process. The abused have now become the abusers.

There will be a fundraiser for AIPAC at the Mittleman Center and I will be there with my sign, this will be my third year in front of this get-together and asking our politicians to stay away. Well, maybe this year our would be progressive reps will stay home; don't hold your breath. The PINOs will be there, (Progressives in Name Only) insider feasting themselves and they will get elected in 2012, why? We are a country that loves killing and occupation--we do it so well!

I want to say to all of you, choose, wars or schools, you cannot have both. Choose Good Health-care, or Empire---you cannot have both. A safe environment for your children or a slow death, not both! Many had thought that maybe President Obama would lead us out of the valley of corruption, WRONG.

After forty years of being a democrat, a few years ago I did one of my great Irish-Exits and ran from this once noble party and became a member of the Oregon Progressive Party. OPP stands for most things that I believe in and it is a very young party. You can go to one of our meetings and feel your voice is heard, people may not agree with you but we will fight for your right to speak.

So, this Sunday we will be at the fundraiser for an organization that spends millions wining and dining our reps, will you come and join us? What is happening in Gaza and the West Bank has been condemned by most nations, the US stops anything coming out of the Security Council by the use of our veto. The last vote on the continuation of building settlements was 122 nations to condemn and 14 Security Council Members also condemning the Israeli government but, one veto from the US and the matter died. Sad!

Trial of John Graham Native Land Defender Begins: Reports from Rapid City (Nov.29th)

john graham From the open publishing newswire: Today, November 29th, jury selection begins for the trial of Tuchone native John Graham. As many who have been following this case know, John Graham has been charged with the 1970's murder of his friend and comrade in the American Indian Movement, Anna Mae Aquash.

We understand the real intentions of this so called "investigation" to be two-fold. The first is an attempt by the State to rewrite history in order to cover up the crimes they themselves committed. The second intent is to neutralize Native American struggle for survival in the face of colonial and economic domination.

No news is objective and we are not here to pretend.

Victory for Sea Lions of the Columbia River

From the open publishing newswire: After a year of deliberation, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled to block the National Marine Fisheries Service's killing of federally protected sea lions on the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington. In Defense of Animals (IDA) and the Sea Lion Defense Brigade (SLDB) have campaigned against the state-sanctioned sea lion killing for more than three years, and congratulate the prevailing plaintiffs, The Humane Society of the United States, Wild Fish Conservancy and two private citizens.

The court said the government failed to meet the requirements of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and cannot justify killing protected pinnipeds. The sea lion predation of .04 to 4.2 percent of the spring salmon run at the Bonneville Dam could not be considered a "significant negative impact" when the same agencies allow fisherman to take up to 17 percent of the returning fish.

"This is a huge victory for sea lions and salmon. We are relieved to see an end to the unethical, politically motivated killing of native, protected sea lions," said IDA's Northwest Director Matt Rossell. "We hope these agencies will now address the human-caused threats to salmon recovery - over-fishing, introduction of non-native fish, dams and habitat destruction."

Since the lethal removal program began in 2008, IDA and the SLDB have worked to protect the sea lions in the Columbia River and hold agencies accountable to the public for this controversial program. Activists organized dozens of demonstrations, met with government officials, and rallied on the steps of the Oregon capital. IDA fought a court battle to free one sea lion named "Willy," who was misidentified by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and wrongfully removed from the river.

Photos of Obama protest on 10-20

From the open publishing newswire: Photos of the hardy 50+ who bravely stood their ground against over 100 right-wing Tea Party or re-packaged Americans For Prosperity protestors and over 5,000 Obama supporters. Also photos of the right wingers to show how utterly confused and misled they are, in spite of their real anger/grievances. Sometimes, you don't know whether to laugh or weep! What will it take for ordinary Americans to wake up and stop being conned/manipulated by the elites and their pundits.

Well, there were over 5,000 Obama supporters, 100 right wing Tea Party/Americans for Prosperity, and 50 of us at the protest two days ago when Obama came to town to stump for Kitzhaber. But the progressive activists from Veterans for Peace, PCASC, SUPER, ISO, immigrant rights groups and others bravely stood their ground in spite of their small numbers, and did their best to get their message out. No more wars and occupations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Pakistan, no more corporate giveaways and bailouts, Money for jobs and education, and no more voting for the two-party con men, Democrats and Republicans, soaking in corporate money and corruption. If we want real change, we've got to do it ourselves, not depend on politicians, leaders and cheerleaders. Look at what the French students and workers are doing right now to fight back against the cutbacks and attacks on them by the ruling elites. Strike, Blockade, Sabotage! Enough said!
