Congress, as a whole, has abandoned us for whatever reason---fear, power, money, or just plain stupidity, I don't care what the reason is, they all have to go. That will be my rallying cry from now until November. When people see that a politician has the word incumbent after his/her name they will get sick at the thought of voting for them. The action starts at: 729 SE Oregon St. (Earl's Den) @ high noon 2:15-2:30 we will be at the fed building to show that we loved the 4th Amendment and want to pay our respects. 4th Amendment: - Protection from unreasonable search and seizure. The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

At the end of the event, people walked into the capitol and up to the Governor's office to present this [Buffalo Bill] "award" to Montana's Governor Brian Schweitzer for his role in the largest wild buffalo slaughter since the 1800s. This is the same governor who promised "more tolerance" for wild bison in Montana. Of course, the Governor was out of the office and unable to receive his token in person, but an intern was sent out to hear our concerns in his stead.
While the FCC ignored all of our voices and pushed the rule changes ahead in spite of monumental outcry, it seems we have been heard anyway. Moments ago, the Senate votes to throw out the FCC's decision. Here is a communique from Free Press Action: Just moments ago, by a near-unanimous vote, the Senate stood up to Big Media. They voted to throw out the FCC decision to let the largest media companies swallow up even more local media. This is simply an astounding victory, and it would not have happened without the massive grassroots effort by you and thousands of others who called their senators, sent more than a quarter million letters, posted thousands of pictures and stories on StopBigMedia.com, and testified at public hearings held by the FCC. It was your dedication that made today's Senate win possible. Today was a huge step forward, but there is still much to do. The fight against the FCC now moves to the House, where our elected representatives need to hear from us.
LNG for Oregon? Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): Oregon at a Crossroads. Just in time for this event, the Governor's office and Oregon Department of Energy yesterday demanded a new Environmental Impact Statement for the Bradwood LNG proposal. They cited multiple changes in the project proposal that are making it impossible for the public to get a clear sense of the project... a big help to the folks fighting the project... the report does acknowledge the excessive greenhouse gas impacts of LNG. The report, however, does conclude that Oregon needs more gas. Still, it will go a long way to undermine the false claims of LNG speculators. The Oregonian described it yesterday as a "potentially fatal blow" to LNG. Speakers will include community activists, Bill Bradbury, and former Enron prosecutor John Kroger. All will address the importance of moving Oregon away from LNG and towards conservation, efficiency, and renewables. Come by and learn more about the push to reject LNG, "the next fossil fuel."

On Tuesday, February 19, Fidel Castro announced he was resigning his position as President of Cuba. This comes 19 months after Castro underwent stomach surgery. In fact he has not been in public since then. The media coverage since Castro announced his retirement has been sickening. No mention of the real social gains of the revolution, but plenty of talk about brutal dictatorship and so on.
Immediately upon hearing of Castro's retirement, George W. Bush announced that this should begin a democratic transition and that, "Eventually this transition ought to lead to free and fair elections. And I mean free and I mean fair." He added that, "The United States will help the people of Cuba realize the blessings of liberty." The blessings of liberty indeed! We may ask whether he is referring to the kind of blessings bestowed on the Iraqi or Afghan people. The hypocrisy of the man has no limits. Everyone knows that irregularities took place when Bush was elected, so he has no authority to give lessons on democracy to anyone. Furthermore, the recent elections in Pakistan witnessed blatant vote rigging, which we can be sure was organised with the help and advice of US "experts".

The public is invited to comment at the hearing in the Council Chambers, 4th and Madison at 2 PM, Wednesday. Comments can also be e-mailed to Karla Moore-Love, Council Clerk
kmoore-love@ci.portland.or.us or given or mailed to her at 1221 SW 4th, Rm. 140, Portland 97204.
This is your opportunity to tell the Council what you think of more high-rise development, gentrification, and construction downtown. Moyer's architect is talking in the press like a planning Czar. He says he can put skyscrapers anywhere downtown using FAR stratagems if zoning does not allow, as with Moyer Tower. The Block-5 area has been a construction-sacrifice zone too often through the years :1997-2000, 2006-2008, and, if Moyer gets his way, it will be so again 2008-2011. "What market collapse?" say developers, who claim they're building "ten years into the future" and for "an exclusive market." What do you say to the makeover of your city for the benefit of some hypothetical upscale market from out of town? Moyer Tower stands for all of that and more of that.

H.R. 1955 has been passed by the House, and is being debated in the Senate. Should this bill become law, those with "extremist belief systems" - as defined by the government - would be subjected to government scrutiny and worse for supposedly promoting "violent radicalization".
As defined by the government, do you have an "extremist belief system" which could be used to facilitate "ideologically based violence to advance political, religious, or social change"? Then you could be guilty of "violent radicalization", and find yourself in the crosshairs of H.R. 1955 (and companion bill S. 1959), the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007. This proposed federal law was co-written by its sponsor, California Democrat Jane Harman. It was passed by the House on October 23, 2007 by a vote of 404 to 6, and is currently being deliberated in the Senate. See link to www.govtrack.us for Bringing the War on Terrorism Home: Congress Considers How to 'Disrupt' Radical Movements in the United States, an article by Jessica Lee written on November 16, 2007, describing this proposed law in detail, and its implications. crime is called "9/11".
From the open publishing newswire:
In Olympia this week, a Washington State House Committee approved a resolution asking Congress to roll back the FCC's recent deregulation of media ownership rules. At issue is a controversial FCC decision last December to allow media companies to control both a city's newspaper and TV/radio stations, in the 20 largest markets. The decision flies in the face of overwhelming opposition expressed by the thousands of people who testified against media consolidation at six public hearings, hundreds of thousands of comments submitted to the FCC, and an impressively bipartisan range of elected officials.
The FCC's final public hearing on the issue was held in Seattle on Nov 9. Despite having less than a week's notice of the hearing date, over 1100 people turned out to testify at the nine-hour marathon hearing. This week, the Washington State House Committee on Technology, Energy and Communications unanimously endorsed a resolution urging Congress to enact the Media Ownership Act, a bill which would retroactively repeal the FCC's December ruling, and impose stronger public accountability requirements on future FCC decisions.

The Washington State Democratic Central Committee voted on January 26, 2008 to support SJM 8016 and HJM 4027,the two memorials in the state legislature calling for impeachment investigation of Bush and Cheney.
The resolution quotes the text of SJM 8016 : "WHEREAS, America has only until January 20th, 2009 to signal to history that America will not sanction torture, America will not sanction unprovoked war, and America will not sanction illegal spying, including on its citizens" |
