Help Bark on Thursday, May 26th to send NW Natural the message that we will never allow this pipeline to go through Mt. Hood! Mark your calendars and get ready to take a stand for Mt. Hood on Thursday, May 26th! To plug in to our in-person actions contact Olivia (olivia@bark-out.org), otherwise just visit bark-out.org on May 26th. In March of this year Palomar withdrew its application to construct the 220-mile pipeline through Oregon, but NW Natural is scheming to bring the project back as early as next year including its 40-mile long clearcut through Mt. Hood National Forest. Visit this link to learn more about NW Naturals plans to resurrect Palomar.

Headsup. There is going to be an International Oil Spill Conference here next week sponsored by the oil lobby group API. Cant find much about it online. Any action on this?
API is right now trying to bribe Congress not to cut its tax subsidies. "At a briefing Monday, a senior tax adviser for the American Petroleum Institute (API), the industry's main lobbying arm, said efforts to repeal the oil and gas tax breaks were a "vindictive use of the tax code." Johnson said oil and gas companies were being singled out by lawmakers because gasoline prices were high. He noted the industry would be willing to support changes to the tax code, as long as the changes were done in the context of comprehensive reform and applied to all industry sectors." [COMMENTS: **It's on May 22. A four-day conference. http://www.api.org/meetings/calendar/

This Friday at 2:30, People will gather in pioneer square to protest the proposed coal export terminal in Longview Washington. At 3, a coal train will proceed to visit some of the banks that fund companies like Arch Coal. Stand in solidarity with the people of Longview who face the real environmental hazards of the coal exports. Do not allow the Northwest to be a resource colony for Chinese power plants. Stand up for Climate Justice! More Information about the proposed coal export terminal
[Video] Portland Banks Targeted for Financing Coal First, at Bank of America, slogans were chalked onto the sidewalk as well as outlines of people, portraying the many deaths attributed world wide to the extraction and burning of this fossil fuel. Crime tape was strewn over doorways along with signs reading "Closed for Climate Crimes," and "Closed for Crimes Against People and the Planet." Also, the walls and windows were splattered with funny money stuck to dabs of mud. These actions were repeated at a local Wells Fargo Bank, a few blocks away, across the street from Pioneer Square.
While some participants staged a die-in on the sidewalks, others used mud to stick "dirty money" to the walls and windows. The group drew interested looks from people on the sidewalks and bank customers using the ATMs, and activists were happy to fill in passers-by on how these banks came to deserve their dirty reputations. A good time was had by all, and it was great to see so much energy channeled into shining a light on the companies financing some of the world's most destructive fossil fuel infrastructure. Yet while actions like this are designed to be both educational and fun, there's nothing amusing about funding activities that destroy the very livability of the planet. When Bank of America and Wells Fargo customers arrive tomorrow at the branches targeted by today's action, they'll learn about the dirty dealings with fossil fuel companies these Wall Street players ordinarily try to cover up. The County Commissioners will use this extra year to research the environmental consequences of using biomass (destroyed forests) for energy. Evergreen needs to enter a contract to build the facility by June 2011 to receive a $3.7 million grant from the state, but likely cannot do so if it has not received permits from the county. While Thurston County is safe (for the next year) from dirty biomass energy, neighboring Mason County may not be so lucky. Engineers at the Olympia Regional Clean Air Agency (ORCAA) recently recommended approval of air pollution permits for the Adage biomass incinerator in Shelton, WA, despite health, safety, and ecological concerns and strong opposition from local and regional citizens. Since the engineers recommended approval, the public now has 40 days to comment on the recommendation (available at www.orcaa.org). There are also two public hearings on the Adage incinerator, scheduled for January 31st at 1 pm and 6 pm at the Shelton Civic Center (525 W. Cota St.). ---------- Olympia Rising Tide is a member of Rising Tide North America. Over two months have passed and there is yet to be any relief from the steady gush of oil destroying wildlife, coastline, jobs, and lives in the Gulf of Mexico. Following the onslaught of oil, BP execs have proven time and again that their main priority is restoring their image-and their profits-rather than the fragile environment they laid waste. Meanwhile, government officials have done little to oversee BP's "clean up" efforts or reform the corrupt Mineral Management Services. On top of this, offshore drilling continues with business as usual and no new regulations to prevent another blow out like the Deepwater Horizon from happening again. The crisis has put a spotlight on the way that capitalism sacrifices all other concerns for the sake of the bottom line, potentially producing even greater problems such as catastrophic climate change. Come to a presentation and discussion on the socialist alternative to unconstrained ecological devastation. http://www.portlandsocialists.org

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is now reviewing a "Title V" operating permit that would allow PGE's Boardman plant to continue polluting our environment and harming our health. This permit is an opportunity for DEQ to require full compliance with the Clean Air Act by requiring the best available pollution control technology at the plant. These costly measures could force PGE to close by 2014.
BACKGROUND: Portland General Electric (PGE) operates Oregon's only coal-fired power plant located in Boardman, Oregon. The Boardman Coal Plant emits 5 million tons of carbon dioxide, over 15,000 tons of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide and over 200 pounds of mercury every single year making it a major source of air pollution in the Gorge, and Oregon's largest stationary source of global warming pollution. WHAT: Public hearing on the future of the Boardman coal-fired power plant. The DEQ is taking public comment on the Title V "Acid Rain" operating permit for Portland General Electric's Boardman coal-fired power plant.
Please join us for a demonstration in downtown Portland at noon on Thursday, April 22nd (Earth Day), to demonstrate your opposition to Liquefied Natural Gas development on public land!
This rally coincides with two important LNG happenings this month: The state of Oregon is considering extending a lease for Oregon LNG on the publicly owned Skipanon Peninsula in Warrenton. At the same time, Oregon LNG is being investigated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for misconduct and abuse of stakeholders in the permitting process. On the day of our rally the FERC investigative hearing on Oregon LNG's misconduct will be held at Portland City Hall and we will be there to show our opposition to LNG in Oregon! No LNG Development on Public Lands! Noon-1pm in front of Portland City Hall 1120 SW 4th Avenue Thursday, April 22nd - Earth Day http://www.heynwnatural.org/
The hike was led by Martin Evans of the forest advocacy group, Bark, and Dan Serres of Columbia Riverkeeper. Besides brief background information, Evans and Serres detail upcoming events where people can voice their opposition to a proposal siting these LNG terminals in Oregon in order to facilitate natural gas delivery to California, who have refused to allow these facilities in their state. Doris "Granny D" Haddock died peacefully today in her Dublin, New Hampshire family home at 7:18 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010. She was 100 years old. Born in 1910 in Laconia, New Hampshire, she attended Emerson College and lived through two world wars and the Great Depression. She was an activist for her community and for her country, remaining active until the return of chronic respiratory problems four days ago
In the 1960s, she and her husband, James Haddock, Sr., were instrumental in halting planned nuclear tests that would have destroyed a native fishing village and region in Alaska. A public memorial service will be held this summer. Video of Granny D when she was last in Portland December 2005
Hopi and Navajo fighting Peabody Coal mining on Black Mesa celebrated a victory this week when the US Interior Dept. rejected a mining permit for Peabody Coal. It is a victory that the majority of the mainstream media is ignoring. Hopi and Navajo have made it easy for even the laziest journalist, or the newspaper without a dime for travel, to cover the story. There are press statements online with abundant quotes from the Hopi and Navajo who took the action and live on the land. Their phone numbers are also on their press statements, so the mainstream media has no excuse. Censored News will even send the judge's order by e-mail to anyone that requests it. It seems the mainstream media doesn't want to admit the truth about mining on Black Mesa. Journalists do not want to take the time to understand the facts. link to narcosphere.narconews.com
Oregon gas giant, NW Natural, was recently forced by federal court to release the list of names of the 1500 Oregonian's whose land is threatened to be condemned for a right-of-way for the Palomar gas pipeline. Steve Wick was one of these names - Steve is an old time Oregonian who raises filberts and hopes to start raising grapes -- but now his plans are put on hold because of the threat of the pipeline. He is not alone. This project poses an imminent threat to the land and livelihood of everyone on that list, at the direct hand of fossil fuel expansion and the desire for corporate profit. The 1500 named landowners along the pipeline route are not the only people impacted by the pipeline. Related Article: Oregon Landowners Deliver Petition to NW Natural
