This is a transcript of a presentation by Jes?s Sep?lveda at the International Day of Action Against FTAA and Plan Colombia in Eugene, Sept. 29 2001. He draws connections between war, terrorism and the history of colonialism, "the fundamental source of violence."
On the evening of Sept. 24, Miles Eli Schulmeister was found dead in his cell at the Clallam County Jail. Port Angeles Police, who ruled the death a suicide, say Schulmeister hung himself with a bed sheet from an 18" bunk bed post, twisting his body around to strangle himself. His friends and family believe hostile police interrogation may have driven him to suicide.

"The Taliban, thus, began as a U.S.-backed paramilitary organization, using the same strategy as was used in Colombia with the formation of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC). As in South America, the explosive mixture of paramilitary groups and the massive profits to be made in narco-trafficking under drug prohibition has grown into a force beyond control of its makers. Even as the U.S. government today opposes the Taliban in Afghanistan, it is creating another one in Colombia."

The "virus" of terrorism and human created death, has been growing well in the United States culture for quite some time. I now feel the survival of United States culture - depends on whether or not the United States keeps killing people through WAR and "other" state sanctioned executions of human beings; or the United States decides to stop being a militaristic and over-consuming nation.
(THIS is WAR! RIGHT NOW! YOU ARE READING IT. Pretty cool - huh? - WORD WAR 3 !!!).).

Know the organization(s) that you are involved with. Observe their internal processes. If you are anti-authoritarian, do you observe a tendency for top-down decision making? Is there an ongoing debate within the organization about making it less oppressive to people of color, women, sexual minorities, etc.? On a personal basis, do people treat each other with love and respect, or is there agressive politicking to push personal or private agendas?
PERHAPS IT WAS the death of a white citizen of the First World that brought the anti-globalization protests in Genoa, Italy, to the forefront of the mass media, but that's hardly where tragedy began in this story.
Washington tolerates atrocities against civilians by neo-Nazi AUC forces, long-known by the CIA as drug traffikers linked to the Colombian Army. In a replay of history, U.S. warmongers push for expansion of Plan Colombia, the biggest U.S. backed, dirty covert military operation since Vietnam.

Barely a day goes by that the Corporate Media do not bring us stories from the front-lines of the "smoking" war. Question is: Why do so many believe that the Corporatocracy is, or can be, a wholesome Consumer Advocate? This is a sort of guide to today's dispatches.

While the fumigation campaign has been going since the end of last year, the other component of Plan Colombia, the $80m to help coca farmers switch to legal crops, has not arrived... Coca growing is becoming the new cottage industry and no aerial eradication programme will be able to destroy these mini-plantations. 'The farmers grow it, the gringos consume it' ...."This is a carefully planned campaign," says James Mack, the American point-man for Plan Colombia, the anti-drugs plan financed by $1.3 billion of American aid.
The situation in Colombia is worsening with every passing day, and is most dramatically illustrated by the increase of massacres in Colombia. Local activists from the Peace In Colombia Action Group (PICAG) have stepped up their efforts to inform Oregonians about the recent US military intervention in Colombia.

Barred from public building, peace talks go on anyway
US President George W Bush intends to continue fighting the 'war on drugs' in Colombia with undiminished vigour - despite objections from the European Union. The US has invested 1.3 billion dollars in Plan Colombia, a controversial project that aims to bring an end to Colombia's 36-year-long civil war - and the country's thriving cocaine trade. But the European Union is refusing to take part: it feels the Colombian people will gain little from the US plan. Most of all, America's war on drugs is interfering with European peace initiatives in Colombia.

Marijuana use in mammals is an ancient defense adaptation to an illness called excito-toxic neuroendocrine
stress response (ENSR). This disease is caused by harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation and other sources of chemical free radicals. Almost all marijuana users show signs of ENSR. The justification clause of the criminal code allows lawbreaking in circumstances where greater harm is prevented, such as swerving into an illegal lane of traffic to avoid a collision.

Many drug war notes and LINKS to many more charts. The USA has over 2 million of the world's 8 million prisoners. So, the USA has 5% of the world's population, and 25% of the world's prisoners. The USA surpassed Russia in 1999 and now has the world's highest incarceration rate! It is 5 to 17 times higher than all other Western (long democratic traditions) nations.
