Want to keep Liquid Natural Gas tanks off the Columbia River?

NO LNG From the open publishing newswire: We all need to learn everything we can about the LNG caper. This is a very big deal.

The May 19 meeting with another of the pirate corporations, this one known as "Northern Star Natural Gas", out of Houston, Texas, with a fake office in Tigard, will be ramping out the guys in suits (or jeans, whatever they think will see the best), and will be dazzling us with powerpoints, in the Knappa High School gymnasium. Representatives from FERC will tbe there, too--woohoo!

Our counter presentation needs you.

Liquid Natural Gas opponents on The Coast defend themselves against "hillbilly putdowns"

NO LNG From the open publishing newswire:
'Georgia on my mind?' posted an article saying: Blog forums, you know those quirky little places where you get an idea of what makes a specific group of people "tic"? Visiting the one representing the anti-LNG faction of Warrenton, Oregon, residents makes you think maybe the government might have a good idea where to place these storage tanks.

'Stop LNG campaigner' responds: Enough with the Hillbilly putdowns, Georgia. It's often an effective strategy for provocation and division, but it's a new day out, and it's not going to work on this one.

'resser' comments: the folks opposing LNG in Astoria are, in my experience, decent people who don't like the idea of having major energy companies and the Dept. of Homeland Security running their town and their port. It's too bad if anyone has been off-putting, but this LNG opposition seems to be pretty broad-based in the Astoria area. I guess I would say that, if there are harsh perspectives, it's because this development came out of nowhere and was plunked down on top of these little towns, and they've been left to fend off these huge energy companies. I think we could all do them a favor by being realistic about who would benefit from the LNG, and who is going to be taking the risks. Portland (and the rest of Oregon) should be on alert because they are the supposed "market" for some of this LNG, although I suspect it's actually intended for power plants and electricity for California.

LNG on the Columbia River--New proposal at Bradwood, Oregon
Do you want it? Do you need it? Who profits? Who pays?

Please attend this public informational meeting about the proposed Bradwood liquified natural gas receiving facility, this one brought to you by an outfit known as Northern Star Natural Gas, which is purportedly out of Houston, Texas. Northern Star now has a telephone with a voice mail located on Durham Road in Tigard.

Con Men from Texas flying into Oregon to make it look like Houston. Come on, people, put up a fight!

Threatened Sand Lake Estuary and Dunes hike

Sunset at beach at Sand Lake From the open publishing newswire: Developers have applied for a conditional land use permit to develop a "Scottish" championship golf course in a spectacularly undeveloped stretch of the Northern Oregon Coast.

The area is home to threatened and endangered species and Sand Lake is one of only two major estuaries designated as a "natural" estuary by the State of Oregon. The Sand Lake Estuary and Dunes is situated near Whalen Island, Cape Kiwanda and Cape Lookout State Parks and Siuslaw National Forest lands.

The Conditional Use Application for the proposed golf course project has been filed with Tillamook County. We will post comment period dates and hearing dates when they have been set by Tillamook County. The developers have applied for their third extension (now until May 1st, 2005) to turn in additional reports required by Tillamook County.

Hike the threatened Sand Lake Estuary and Dunes on Saturday, March 19th, 11:00 AM.

FOUR Liquified Natural Gas Receiving terminals now proposed for Lower Columbia River

From the open publishing newswire: Four LNG termianls have now been proposed for the mouth of the Columbia River. Major players will be Shell/Bechtel. Other areas, like Vallejo and Eureka, California, Baja El Norte, Mexico, and Mobile, Alabama have booted out the priates. We can, too!

The transnational pirates have set their sights on the Columbia River, with FOUR LNG receiving terminals now being proposed: two on the mouth of the Columbia, the Graveyard of the Pacific, one about 25 miles upriver in Bradwood, Oregon, across from the Columiba White-Tailed Deer Refuge, and another close to Clatskanie, Oregon, The privateers have been kicked out of all the ports along the California coast, and had a failed incursion attempt into the Puget Sound last year. So they are desperate to occupy the Columbia, and have the first West Coast LNG termianl in the US(there are only four of these monsters in the entire US).

Reasons the corpos give for siting these massive, belching, smelly, volatile things surrounded by concertina wire and helidopter gunships and soldiers with M-16s here: The fact that Calpine Corporaation was allowed to sign a 65-year, transferable lease with the Port of Astoria without public input; Relative sparcity of population, economic vulnerability of the people(High unemployment rate, traditional resource extraction jobs pretty much gone), and social and political disempowerment of the population (low voter turn-out, high school dropout rates).

Tillamook County Becoming r-BGH Free

From the open publishing newswire: The Tillamook County Creamery Association's membership voted 83-43 to back up the Board's previous decision to go rBGH-free, effective April 1, 2005 (No kidding!). After a two-hour discussion, the co-op's members decided to listen to their consumers' wishes rather than Monsanto.

In an incredible display of consumer activism and strength, over 6,500 people commented to Tillamook by phone, e-mail, fax and letter. Over 98% of the comments stressed the desire for the dairy to go rBGH-free! If ever there was a demonstration that this genetically engineered hormone has nothing to offer but increased disease rates in cows and health risks to consumers, this was it.

We really want to thank all of you who responded to Oregon PSR's requests to contact Tillamook. And a double thanks to everyone who sent our alert memo's to others and asked them to do the same. Never in our wildest dreams did we think the ripple effect would go so far.

50/50 PAC Plan Strikes a Balance for the Tillamook Rainforest

From the open publishing newswire: State ups the anty again - Trying to turn the Tillamook into an Industrial Tree Farm

Is there no end in sight? The original Forest Management Plan adopted in 2001 was scheduled to cut on average 179 million board feet from the Tillamook. Now in 2004 the State is upping the cut to 305 million board feet. This is almost double from what ODF considered reasonable almost 2 years ago. Increased logging at the expense of clean water, healthy fish and recreation use is being driven by politics and the need for fast cash. At this increase rate in harvest, the State Forests will be logged over in the next 20 years. Polling shows Oregonians don't want their State Forests managed as a tree farm and are opposed to clear cutting. The Tillamook 50/50 Plan offers voters another option.

Seismological Research Project Will Injure & Kill

From the open publishing newswire: A massive international (US/Canada/Japan) research project planned for late August off the coast of Vancouver Island will likely injure and kill marine mammals, fish, birds and turtles. A massive international (US/Canada/Japan) seismological research project is planned for late August and early September, 2003, off the south coast of Vancouver Island. This project will use an extremely large air cannon, firing at a volume of 243dB. We understand that this level is higher than the seismic tests in Baja that killed beaked whales.

Oregon auctions off Old-Growth from Elliott State Forest

From the open publishing newswire: big big old old tree On Wednesday, June 18, the Oregon Department of Forestry auctions off some of the oldest trees left on state forest lands. The Lone Surprise Timber Sale contains dozens of centuries-old trees critically important to the declining Northern Spotted Owl population in the Elliott State Forest. This is in spite of Governor Kulongoski's campaign pledge not to cut old-growth.

The Lone Surprise timber sale (pictured) contains old-growth trees rarely found on the Elliott because, after the 1868 fire, the remaining old-growth was the first to be logged. Recent studies have found that these few remnant old-growth stands are vitally important to the survival of Owls on the Elliott, and recommends they not be logged. None the less, Roseburg Forest Products (541-679-3311) was seen cruising the sale to prepare a bid price. Why is Oregon Department of Forestry selling this forest to be clearcut when even Governor Kulongoski (503-378-3111) promised not to cut old-growth as a campaign pledge.

On the same day, the Larson Headwaters sale will be sold. ODF has rated this sale as "High Hazard for slope stability". The "probability" of a slope failure to enter a stream is rated as "High" and becoming a channelized debris flow is also rated "High". Downstream, Larson Creek still supports endangered salmon. But a NO tree-buffer (zero feet) will be left on the small tributaries flowing into Larson Creek, in spite of the landslide risk and endangered fish downstream. ODF claims cutting old-growth and clearcutting high-landslide-risk slopes in the Elliott is especially good for school children because the Elliott is "common school fund lands". The auctions on June 18 [occured] at 2:00 p.m. at the Coos District Oregon Department of Forestry, 63612 Fifth Road, Coos Bay, Oregon 97420. 541-267-4136 (voice) and 269-2027 (fax). Newport activities include music, food, peace poetry and an organized high school student contingent singing group. More traditional ways of expressing opinion against this unnecessary war will also occur, including signs and a silent vigil." On Friday, August 16, Portlanders stood in solidarity with Samantha Buck and demonstrated outside the Starbucks in Pioneer Courthouse Square: "Samantha Buck, and her family came from Astoria for the Friday morning August 16th protest at Pioneer Square Starbucks. From 7am to 9am, some 15 people handed out flyers, talked to people about the issue, and asked them to sign petitions... This issue is an easy sell. Over 1000 flyers were handed out, and the great majority of the people who took them, both read them, and sympathised with Sam. Many people were outraged by the bullying strongarm tactics of Starbucks as they try to put a small business owner out of business." [ Full story and Photos ]

Another post to the open publishing newswire urges people to call and write Starbucks and the Portland lawyers they hired to go after Samantha. This post includes emails, phone numbers, and -- borrowing a technique from animal rights activists -- a "black fax" to send. [ Details ]
