"Carnivore" is the name of the FBI's email-sniffing device. It is a piece of hardware that must be installed on the site of an internet service provider (ISP). ISPs are not required by law to allow the FBI to insall a carnivore device, but many allow it whenever asked (MSN, AOL, others). Some refuse to allow them on their premises at all, and seek to comply with court ordered search warrants by collecting and turning over the required information themselves (Earthlink, Mindspring, others). Now the FBI's assertions about the nature of Carnivore are being shown to be lies. Surprise!
