An Opportunity to Open Presidential Debates.
a literary gathering of epic proportions
RAW Food Not Bombs is back today after a 2 week hiatus.
Yesterday marks the 3rd anniversary of the public transportation bombings in London, England which took 52 lives.
Confirmation that radioactive brine has been leaking for two decades from a German underground deposit for nuclear waste is yet another blow to the idea that nuclear power can safely increase electricity generation and simultaneously reduce emissions.
"If you look at the course of western history you'll see that we're slowly granting basic rights to everyone. A long time ago only kings had rights. Then rights were extended to property-owning white men. Then all men. Then wymyn [women]. Then children. Then the mentally retarded. Now we're agonizing over the extension of basic rights to animals. We need to finally accept that all sentient creatures are deserving of basic rights." -- Moby (1)
On Saturday, July 12, Portland Anonymous will hold its sixth monthly protest outside the Church of Scientology at 11am. We will be meeting at the Umbrella Man at Pioneer Courthouse Square, then marching to SW Broadway and Salmon. Our June protest grew to over 60 people.

I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, find that the current existence and risk of the proliferation of weapons-usable fissile material on the Korean Peninsula constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States, and I hereby declare a national emergency to deal with that threat.
Like many other countries, Kenya provided its own staple foods until the 1980s. Today the country imports 80% of its food. To buy up the entire grain harvest of the US, only $120 billion is needed-a small amount for the speculators on the currency market.

Afghanistan was supposed to be the "good war"; a "just response" to the attacks of September 11. It was supposed to bring Bin Laden to justice "dead or alive" and quash terrorism wherever it originated. 95 per cent of the American people supported the invasion of Afghanistan. Now less than half think the U.S. will prevail. The war was promoted as a way to replace a repressive fundamentalist regime with a democratic government based on western values. The Bush administration promised to rebuild war-torn Afghanistan, transform its feudal system into a free market economy, and liberate its women from the oppression of Islamic extremism.
"I FEEL he is totally different." Those were the words of Naser Mahdi, a school teacher in Buquba, Iraq, on the Democrats' presumptive presidential nominee Barack Obama. "The world needs new blood in rulers," Mahdi told Inter Press Service, "and we hope that he might decrease the dominating authority of the United States."
Mahdi speaks for the millions of people, in the U.S. and around the world, who hope that Obama represents a new direction after eight miserable years of George W. Bush and his fellow warmongers. But Mahdi and many others are in for a terrible disappointment--as Obama himself is making clear.
With the days drawing nearer to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, why are we silent?
Dear Jeff Kingsbury and other really bad people,

The Police State is not coming! The Police State is HERE! Wake up people!

I have yet to see the corporate press acknowlege the fact that Ingrid Betancourt is a Green Party member and representative.

The BBC series on conspiracy theories presented a documentary on WTC 7 - the favourite building of the 9/11 'CT's' over the last few years. The likes of Dylan Avery, Steven Jones and the rest of the CT profiteers are given time in front of the camera yet none of their nonsense stacks up.
"Philosophy has a very important role to play in the Age of Globalization. Carping about the need for social change, or protesting publicly against certain policies, is simply dismissed as irrelevant and unproductive. Utopian suggests all realities are at root imaginary.."

Leading Oregon Democrats participated in annual Oregon AIPAC dinner on 5/21. The themes endorsed by keynote speakers featured a right-wing pro-Israeli view against negotiation with Palestinians or other Arabs. Strident anti-Iran rhetoric was an end-note. Most of the entanglement of Democratic Party leadership with AIPAC goes under-reported, though it undermines the anti-war movement.
we need a ride!
Two days ago an African-American singer belted out "Lift Every Voice and Sing", known as the "Black National Anthem". What makes this news its that it was part of Denver's State of the City ceremony, and she was supposed to be singing the "Star Spangled Banner". Since then the airwaves have pulsed with punditry but here, silence. Why might this be?
This month's benefit movie night is for Jonathan Paul. We'll be showing "Your Are All Diseased" a standup HBO special by the late great George Carlin. You may get offended, but that's OK. Sunday the 13th, 8pm. The Artistery. Be there.
On Canada Day morning bombs made with gas cans and timed incendiaries were left along with a warning painted on the wall at the office of Frontenac Ventures Corporation in Oakville. This is a mining company one of whose projects is uranium mining in the area of Sharbot Lake. Despite local opposition by native and non-native peoples they continue to destroy territory and lives that they have no claim to.

In order to understand the "rescue operation" of Ingrid Betancourt and the Northrop Grumman Corporation mercenaries who were released with her, it is necessary to piece together articles published in the media, filter the content and out of this is formed a true understanding of the facts of what happened here.

For those of you in search of this dangerous knowledge, follow me into the labyrinth, as I use the recently released "Lost Chapter" from the Iran/Contra commission report
http://www.consortiumnews.com/2008/062908.html to throw a little light into the dark world which holds us all captive. I can confirm that some parts of the story revealed therein are true, because I was there, seeking to help my country, serving as an unwitting part of a network that was created to bring democratic freedom to an end in America and the world.
John Pilger reaches back into the history of the Democratic Party and describes the tradition of war-making and expansionism that Barack Obama has now left little doubt he will honour.
Martin Luther King called us to a radical revolution of values, from a thing-oriented to a person-oriented society. Like community centers, the basic income could have multiplier effects. The price of oil rose three-fold in four years. Lifestyles and priorities must change.
What a difference a general election makes.
Hours after the Supreme Court handed down a ruling banning the death penalty for the rape of a child, Democratic candidate Barack Obama found his inner Scalia and declared it a miscarriage of justice. "I have said repeatedly that I think that the death penalty should be applied in very narrow circumstances for the most egregious of crimes," he told reporters at a press conference in Chicago. This is true. Despite the assumptions of some of his admirers, for at least as long as he has held political ambitions, Barack Obama has positioned himself as a supporter of state-sanctioned murder.
For a candidate who talks the talk on human rights, Barack Obama has little to say about the infamous School of the Americas (SOA). Originally established in the Panama Canal Zone in 1946, the school later moved to Fort Benning, Georgia in 1984. Since its inception, the institution has instructed more than 60,000 Latin American soldiers in military and law-enforcement tactics.
Barack Obama arrived on the political scene with a smile as beautiful as salvation itself, like a visitor from an idealized future, one where the races have combined to a golden hue, sent here to show us the way. Of course people fell in love with him. Yet now we see Obama drawn into the great room where the Democratic/Corporate establishment dwells, and the door is slowly closing behind him. This is not how it was supposed to be.
Obama has just opted out of public financing, the first presidential candidate to do so since 1972. NewsHour's Mark Shields, keeper of the flame for all that is good in the Democratic Party, called it "a flip-flop of epic proportions," noting that Obama's argument about a GOP financial advantage was "bogus." Shields even said it raised issues of Obama's "character." The New York Times editorialized that 2008 may now be "the year public financing died." In seizing a tactical advantage, Obama has handed an enormous strategic victory to corporate power.
Many people regard Obama's upcoming nomination for president as a sign that change is underway and that the nightmare of Bush and Cheney will be over beginning in late January 2009. New York Times columnist Frank Rich, for example, sees Obama's emergence as a changing of the guard. Others have cited Obama's campaign as indicative of millennials beginning to take the political stage. Millions are pleased that finally an African-American is going to be nominated by one of the two major parties and see this as in and of itself a step forward.
For the well-meaning people who are feeling this way, I have this question: How can the same Democratic Party, and the same specific individuals, who have co-operated in, permitted and/or legalized the Bush regime's atrocities - including torture and war crimes - now tell us that the candidate that they endorse is the solution to the horrid things that this system and these individuals have themselves facilitated and colluded in?
Four years ago, as the sentiment against George W. Bush's administration mounted, the entire left-wing spectrum hung on tight to the coattails of John Kerry, grasping for dear life. Critics called it the "Anybody but Bush" syndrome, but it should have been more aptly coined "Nobody but Kerry."
Virtually every progressive cause, from labor to the environment, had been co-opted by a mindset that would have ensured more of the same. There was no pressure put on Kerry to change, and he didn't. As a result, the antiwar movement collapsed, with no demonstrations and a strict allegiance to the Democrat's pro-war campaign. Fortunately, the movement to end the war was resurrected by Cindy Sheehan's as she erected her tent outside the Bush compound in Texas months later. Today we find our political climate in a similar state of shock. Call it the "Nobody but Obama" epidemic. Senator Barack Obama has now sealed up the Democratic nomination, and the usual suspects, from MoveOn.org to Progressive Democrats for America, are falling in line. Sadly, what seems to be reigning in this year's election is even worse than the storm that flooded our issues in 2004.
Back in January, at one of the Democratic presidential candidates' debates, Barack Obama took one of his few open shots at Hillary Clinton's past as a shill for shady corporations. "While I was working [as a community organizer in Chicago]...watching those folks see their jobs shift overseas," Obama said, "you were a corporate lawyer sitting on the board at Wal-Mart."
It was a point that deserved to be made more often. Clinton's remade campaign image as a populist fighting for the "little guy" was in stark contrast to her long history as a fixture of the Democratic Party establishment and defender of corporations like Wal-Mart. But maybe Obama had his reasons for keeping quiet about the Beast of Bentonville.
The fourth. That's tonight. When all red-blooded 'mericans burn chinese fireworks for the delight of the children.
The fact that the delight is toxic is ignored. The fact that fireworks are both obnoxious and noxious is ignored.

EV Awareness Day to be held this Saturday at Pioneer Courthouse Square.
Not even 24 hours after the Silverton police brutally shot and killed Andrew James Hanlon (who had been living with his mother in France and attending art school when he came to visit his sister in Silverton last year). The Clackamas police used a "pit manuver" on bank robbery suspect Mitchell Sean Coole and caused him to bounce off the 205 freeway wall at Sunnyside rd. and cross the medium into oncoming traffic and ended up hitting several vehicles injuring multiple people.
I'm not sure what kind of moron gave the OK to perform a pit manuever on a fleeing supect during rush hour on a highway with no medium, but it showed an obvious disregard for the public.
We want change. Obama says he will deliver change, as did the Democrats in '06. Yet nothing could be farther from the truth. Even the statistics prove the Democrats have failed us.
