let them eat TSA 18.11.2010 17:49
USA is feudal country: 50 million went hungry last year and CEO pay all time high
A record one in six American families went hungry last year because they did not have enough food, a shock survey has revealed. Some 17.4 million U.S. households - 50 million people - were classified as 'food insecure' which meant they regularly skipped meals even if they wanted to eat. Others went for entire days without eating and handed round smaller portion sizes to make their meagre offerings suffice. ---- news comes as revealed top U.S. executives saw pay and bonuses shoot up last year [despite] worst recession for 80 years [caused by their bad money management]. ---- acutely embarrassing for the United States, world's richest nation and last remaining superpower. They also shine a light on the vast numbers of hard working Americans who have lost their jobs in the recession and for the first time are having to rely on the state to make ends meet. The U.S. Department of Agriculture study shows that in 2009, almost 50 million people, including 17 million children, were 'food insecure'. This marked a slight INCREASE from the previous year when 17.1 million families had difficulty putting meals on the table. Those in this category usually went hungry, could not afford a balanced meal and cut their portion sizes on the occasions they did have food. ---- Now one in five of all Americans were signed up to one kind of federal food-assistance programmes including food stamps which attracted 34 million participants.

Free Range Children
Free Range Children Two events occurred in the last few days. Decide for yourself if they are entirely unrelated. Yesterday, I purchased a dozen eggs at the supermarket. Today I dropped my 5-year-old daughter off at her Kindergarten class. See the connection? Perhaps you may find one if you are willing to take the conceptual leap of examining the fate of the chicken alongside that of a typical kindergartner.

Social Security for All
A Christian view of the person that insists on an undeserved right to life opposes a merciless system that produces more and more wealth for a few and forces more and more people into poverty. The narrowing of work to paid work must be broken by the new model of work for all. The three kinds of income must be reconfigured in a new social contract.

Budget Cuts in Oregon State Legislature Now- Put in Your 2 Cents
email from Oregon Legislature Speaker of the House, Representative Dave Hunt:

CAPITOL REPORT: June 2, 2010

Last week the state economist issued a new quarterly revenue projection of $577 million less for 2009-11 than he projected in February. Though this new budget shortfall presents a clear and difficult challenge, it is not debilitating and Oregon must remain on the road to economic recovery. Read below about our action plan for addressing these new budget shortfalls.

The Governor has announced his plans to cut $577 million equally across all education, health care, and public safety services. Do you think the Legislature should have a Special Session? If so, where should we cut more deeply? Where should we mitigate for the damage of the across-the-board cuts? How much should we leave in savings to guard against future quarterly forecasts?

Now is your opportunity to weigh in on the steps the Legislature should take the solve the short-term budget shortfall while addressing long-term budget and policy goals. I need to hear your concerns now in order to effectively represent you in the Legislature.

If you would like to share your thoughts with me in person, then join me at my Town Hall Meeting on Jobs, Economic Recovery & the State Budget next Wednesday, June 9th at 6:30pm at The Springs at Clackamas Woods! [ed note: this is mainly for folks in his district but nothing says others can't go].

building a "failed state": Trimet shows how
Our public agencies and officials are hard at work building a "failed state." I would define a "failed state" as one that does not meet the minimum requirements for attaining a measure of public legitimacy based on serving broad social needs. Such a state can only maintain authority through brute force. A state will "fail" once it stops serving the needs of a critical mass of its citizens. The term has been coopted by US militarists as a pretext to justify unlawful and violent interference in the affairs of foreign states, but it remains a useful concept in spite of this taint.

According to documents obtained by the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger, the hospital called the state Department of Human Services (DHS), which ruled that Baltazar Cruz was an unfit mother in part because her lack of English "placed her unborn child in danger and will place the baby in danger in the future."

"Rubí was taken from Baltazar Cruz, who now faces deportation."
