From the open publishing newswire: These are the elections results from Multnomah County just in case you wanted to know...also the State results on the two ballot measures are included. OK..so i included the Portland City Council race too. I know how much you want to know all this. [ Full story ]
From the open publishing newswire: About 250 people gathered from 11am to 1pm???? (I left around 12:30) at Portland City Hall for a rally protesting laws which make it illeagal to sit, stand, or lie on a sidewalk in some circumstances. The laws are often used to harass the homeless, youth, activists and anyone not actively engaged in commerce. A large media contingent (main$tream and local) was there as were people from a wide variety of different communities all coming together. I saw forest activists, Green activists, the folks from Sisters of the Road, homeless people, business people, clergy, elderly, youth and others. It was a diverse crowd for Portland and a nice rally. From the open publishing newswire: "TODAY, Tuesday, Sept., 17 is the LAST DAY TO VOTE in our SPECIAL ELECTION. It includes 2 state ballot measures and a primary election to fill Charlie Hales' seat on the Portland City Council. Ballots must be taken to an official drop-off location by 8:00 p.m. A list of those drop-sites is available via the Multnomah County Elections website."
"Searching Portland Indymedia's archives (using keywords such as 'elections' and 'Portland City Commissioner') found articles on only one of the 16 candidates on the ballot. That is Christian Gunther... In the opinion of this writer, other candidates worthy of consideration include Clifford Walker, Liz Callison, and Jon Myers. Several candidates have websites that can be accessed via links at the City of Portland's online election info." "Also on the ballot are two statewide measures, both referred to the electorate by the State Legislature during its third Special Session. Ballot Measure 19 would amend the Oregon Constitution to make changes regarding the education endowment fund. Ballot Measure 20 would increase the state cigarette tax to benefit the Oregon Health Plan and other programs." From the open publishing newswire: "Ten peaceful demonstrators were rudely disturbed at 10:45pm by five Portland Police officers who demanded they move from the sidewalk near the building or be arrested. Police officers told demonstrators that they could not sit or lie on the public sidewalk (thanks to the new sit/lie ordinance). Demonstrators decided to not stand in the rain all night, but instead rally people to 1. call Wyden 2. attend the sit/lie protest on Wednesday!!" Another participant wrote: "I arrived at 9:30 and about 8-10 people were sitting under the recess of the building out of the way talking. They had one small table and a bunch of sleeping bags. There was absolutely no one else around as this part of town (Wyden's office at 700 NE Multnomah) is dead. About 9:45 a security guard came out and told the group of us who were just sitting there that we had to move out from under the awning and take our protest out into the rain and onto the public sidewalk about 10-20 feet away. "I should say the Wyden's office is inside a 20 story corporate office tower. "The leaderless group tried to negotiate with the guard since moving 15' into the rain just seemed punitive and silncing. We were doing nothing more than sitting. The security guard called the police, who arrived 1 by 1 until they numbered 5 police officers. All this for 8-12 non-violent forest activists holding a peaceful vigil at our Senator's office. "When the police arrived, one of the officers asked what we were protesting about and someone metioned Senator Wyden and one cop ignorantly blurted out "Who is that?". It turned out he was from Washington and sort of proud of the fact he was ignorant and not from here. (But I digress)." From the newswire: A number of community groups are calling for civil liberties safeguards to be added to the Portland Joint Terrorism Task Force (PJTTF) agreement between the City of Portland and the FBI if the Task Force is to be renewed in its present form. They will hold a news conference today, Tuesday, September 17, [ 1pm ] to express their concerns, and call on City Council to modify Portland's relationship with the FBI's Task Force.
The Council will consider renewing its operating agreement with the FBI at a public hearing this Thursday (September 19th) at 2:00 p.m. The disclosure last week by the Portland Tribune that in the late 70's and early 80's, Portland Police gathered information in violation of city policies and state law raised the possibility that the Bureau may currently be conducting surveillance of Oregonians not suspected of criminal activity.
From the newswire: Here's the quick details of what happened to Mike D. at his hearing on Friday, September 13. I attended it with about two dozen other supporters. No cameras were allowed in the courtroom, but I'll tell you that Mike appeared healthy and undaunted, and spoke very well on his own behalf. The hearing was about alleged probation violations. The violations were in three different areas: 1) community service, 2) staying in contact with his probation officer, and 3) getting a GED/"gainful employment". Mike's lawyer, with help from a Street Roots person who testified on his behalf, proved that he has definitely been putting in enough community service hours at Street Roots. So #1 was thrown out. Regarding #3, Mike has been trying to negotiate a compromise with his probation officer to attend an alternative trade school rather than get a GED, but that process was still ongoing. He was unable to attend a meeting he had scheduled with her last Friday because he was incarcerated after his arrest at the Borg timber sale shortly before. From the newswire: "Approximately 2 dozen friends and supporters made the long journey out to Washington County to attend Mike D's hearing, including myself and another mom who brought our kids along. After enduring the same harrasment doled out to all Mike's supporters as we made our way though security and into the court room, we were then told that the judge had ordered "no children in the court room" and we were told we would have to wait outside." "While waiting outside the courtroom I was apprached by an officer who attempted to interogate me on the basis that my son (who has a liver condition) appeared ill, when I stated that I did not have to answer his questions he stated that he was detaining me because my sons appearence indicated he might be malnourished or neglected and indicated that if I refused to answer question I would be put under arrest and my son put in the custody of children's services." From another poster: "Its been awhile since I've been to a courthouse... last time was prior to 9/11 and I remember metal detectors but not lockers for bags or making people sip water bottles to make sure it wasn't er explosive BUT I sure as hell don't remember visitors being videotaped!" One of the sheriff's mentioned that there were already security cameras throughout the building. They're not exactly hidden but their not that obtrusive. Now, having at least three people hovering around a video camera pointed at you on a tripod pointed at you is kinda obtrusive, especially since they were saying no cameras were allowed into the court. Given that there are already cameras in the building for security, what possible reason could there be for this other video taping? Intimidation? Are they making sure to get color video of people who show up so they can sting them at the next action for inciting a riot? Whoops, there go our civil liberties!
From the open publishing newswire: " The forest-service l.e.o.'s (freddies) have been walking over peoples civil- liberties left & right. Today a car load of 3 people attempting to go out to solo timber-sale was followed for 2 miles & then pulled over after we turned off onto a spur road, the officer (dan blythe) claimed that he had seen us cross over the yellow divider line 11 times (which was B.S. we were trying our hardest to stay legal), when asked why he didn't pull us over sooner, dan stated that there was no room on the main road (a tactic used to isolate us from the public), he then took the liscense of the driver (the person didn't have their proof of registration or insurance on them at the time), dan then proceeded to run the info and came back and said the car (which was being borrowed from a family member) was flagged as "sold" in their computers, the driver said they didn't know what that was about, dan then went back and tried again and came back to say that the car was possibly "stolen" and he was going to need the passengers id..."
From the open publishing newswire: "On 9/12/02 the Civilian Review Committee of the Independent Police Review Division held a public forum on Citizen-Police Interaction. Approximately 50-70 people attended including members of more than 12 activist organizations. This was to be the first of a series of public forums to get public opinion on issues regarding the Police in Portland. 7 out of 9 members [volunteers I might add] of the Civilian Review Committee were in attendance. The issues they presented us with were: whether police ought to identify themselves at stops, whether profanity is justifiable at stops, and whether officers ought to give reasons for stopping someone. Note the specificity of 'stops'. There was a feeling on my part that the Committee is only working on issues within some slim boundary, i.e. police stops rather than the more general categories of brutality, accountability generally, racial profiling city-wide, etc."
From the open publishing newswire: "I found out that there was going to be a community meeting with the people that I will need to speak with if I feel I am unjustly treated by the police [ 1 | 2 ]... There were many individuals attending the meeting tonight that believed and more than believed, brought videos and stories that ammounted to a not so pretty picture painted of a police force struggling to maintain a viril presence and look good to their bosses vera katz and mark kroeker, a police force that used to be composed of individuals with bachelor degrees until kroeker became chief and a force that feels the ire and resentment of the community and blames the community ... "There was also shown an outreaching from the establishment for the purpose of either generating good PR and the image of open mindedness and the ability to effect policy, whereas the reality may not be so ..." From the open publishing newswire: "the powers-that-be are at war on the activist community of portland. the recent grand jury subpoenas and felony-related arrests are baseless and their clear intention is to intimidate effective organizers in our community. the police violence of A22 bush protest and the A30 critical mass revealed the increasing militarization of government tactics. the corporate media repeats lies without qualification. the establishment is trying to scare us and we must not let that happen. we must fight back, with loud dissent, independent media and Truth. "Mike D.'s courtdate is tomorrow, Friday the 13th, at the Washington County Courthouse. we must all go there and support him. he's one of us. and when they take one of us on, they take all of us on. we must show the powers-that-be that we will not stand for this harrassment. supporters who showed up at his arraignment faced a phalanx of uniforms who attempted through intimidation to keep them out of public places that they were legally allowed to be. expect tomorrow to be even more intense. the more people we can bring out to support Mike the better. especially folks with cameras, video and still. we'll need to post the Truth about what we see 'cause the corporate media will either ignore this story or twist it beyond recognition." Another supporter writes: "Mike D's Court date is Friday the 13th at 2:30pm at the Washington County Courthouse in Hillsboro. People will be meeting at the Daily Grind to carpool at 12:30 pm. "Inside the courthouse, Sheik Kariye was attending a detention hearing in front of U.S. District Court Judge Donald Ashmanskas to determine whether he would be released pending his November 5 trial. Late in the afternoon, the judge determined that although he did not consider Kariye a threat to the community, he would not allow Kariye to remain free until his trial. "Federal officials claimed that tests on Kairye's luggage revealed the presence of trace amounts of a substance similar to TNT [ corporate news story with independent analysis ]. While the hearing was taking place downtown, Portland police and the FBI conducted a search on Kariye's home in Southeast Portland. "Following a prayer, Sheik Kariye's supporters chanted '2, 4, 6, 8. To a person, the faithful attending the hearing and vigil emphasized that Sheik Kariye is a man of peace."

From the open publishing newswire: "Today in the Senate, Senator Wyden (D-OR) opposed Sen. Craig's (R-ID)Fire Salvage Ryder proposal because it suspended environmental laws. Wyden acknowledged that if Craig's proposal passed, that tree-sits would spring up in every state. However, environmentalists wonder what compromises Senator Wyden will make in order to appease fire fears and big timber interest. Wyden has indicated he is willing to compromise, but has not detailed what those compromises might be. "Senator Wyden is a key player on forest issues in the U.S. Senate, and other Democratic Senators often look to him for direction. On the issue of the Fire Salvage Rider, Wyden has been unclear; and therefore, we must continue to let him hear our demands regarding forest protection. Wyden has repeatedly stated that we need to 'streamline' the judicial process and 'frivilous citizen challenges'. These delays are a direct result of public agencies refusing to comply with environmental laws in the first place. We cannot compromise any of our environmental laws or citizen involvement under the guise of reducing wildfire risks. From the open publishing newswire: "Mike D (a local Portland activist) had an arraignment on Friday, September 6th at Washington County Law Enforcement Center in Hillsboro. About 6 people arrived to support him, and was greeted with Police Harrassment. There was an overabundance of officers, some taking picures and some video taping the six people. The arraignment was moved from 3:oopm back to 1:30pm on purpose, they did no want them there... [T]he officers did not want them to even enter the building, saying that everyone would have to go thru metal detectors, and it would be easier if he just went and got the information that they needed about his next court date...

From the open publishing newswire: "Alan Graf, speaking at a Press Conference held at City Hall on September 5, 2002, announced the intention to sue the City and Police Chief Kroeker. The suit concerns violent actions taken by the police against non violent protesters during the August 22, 2002 demonstration against the fund raising visit of pResident Bush. He is suing in the name of at least 6 people who sustained injuries from unprovoked macing by Portland police, or other officers acting under PPD orders." "We will be asking for both monetary damages and injunctive relief. In particular, we will ask the court to order the police to cease and desist from using pepper spray, tear gas and rubber bullets for crowd control?similar, I might add, to what Mark Kroeker concluded over two years ago in his post May Day report." From the open publishing newswire: The PPRC's weekly rally at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Friday, September 6, at 5:00 p.m., begins the week marking one year since the September 11 attacks by calling for no war on Iraq. "We're encouraged by the clear dissent both within Bush's cabinet and within Congress," said Chris Roehm of the PPRC, "but the news reports of the US moving tanks and artillery to the Middle East suggest that Bush is intent on a war regardless of international law or public opinion." The Independent, a British newspaper, reported today that "[t]he US Navy has booked a giant commercial transporter to take tanks, artillery, ammunition and back-up vehicles to the region," and that "[m]ilitary analysts said it showed the US Navy had probably exhausted the capacity of its own fleet and resorted to the open market."

From the open publishing newswire: "Mike D was arrested on Wednesday September 4th around 4:30am at the Borg Timber Sale. He arrived on the scene as Independent Media Press, approaching a law enforcement forest service vehicle. The Forest Service vehicle was blocking a white van that had "BUSH IS A TIMBER PUPPET" painted on it with green paint. This white van also had a 16 year old girl locked down underneath the vehicle, with flat tires and boards propping the center of the vehicle up where the young girl was. In front of the van was large branches that also helped block the road. This van was intended to block the log trucks from getting to the Borg Timber Sale to cut. As Mike continued to approach the scene, Lawrence (a forest service/law enforcement officer) shined the flashlight at Mike and then started to run towards him, not even saying anything. He arrested Mike D for propable cause, and after several hours of having him sit in the freddy's vehicle, Mike was then taken to Clackamous County Jail and is being charged with 2 felonies that was previously from the Solo Timber Auction. He has an arraignment on Friday, September 6th at 3:oopm,located at the Washington County Law Enforcment Center (the larger new jail) on 215 SW Adams Av. in Hillsboro, Oregon. Max line runs right next to it. There will be Carpools meeting at the Daily Grind at 1:30pm. Please come show your support!"

The first complaint is in regards to the conscious decision by the police to ignore an established line of communication to the protest coordinators. The second complaint is in regards to the excessive use of force against one of our members." [ ILWU Local 5 | ILWU Solidarity Leaflet ]
