At the Human Rights Commission of Portland's invitation, ACLU of Oregon Legislative Director Andrea Meyer will testify in support of keeping local law enforcement from acting as federal immigration agents. Representatives from immigrant rights groups and law enforcement have also been invited to speak.
Two events will be held in Oregon on Saturday, May 29th:
The DREAM ACT, authored by Hatch and Lugar in 2006, exchanges citizenship to illegal aliens for service in the US military. It's a clever attempt to fool immigrants rights activists. IT MUST BE OPPOSED!!
In the struggle over the notorious anti-immigrant, anti-Latino, anti-working class law SB 1070, a person might be tempted to see this as a conflict that plays out among the elites of Arizona politics: legislators, governors, sheriffs, newspaper editors, judges, lawyers, and nonprofits. This view would be understandable, but wrong. The real battle is at the grassroots.
These are videos from the Portland protest march and speeches on May Day

The Phoenix Arizona chapter of The National Socialist Movement (NSM), a white supremacist hate group, is calling for a "Report an Illegal Day" to all NSM chapters and members across the nation to coincide with Cinco de Mayo this year. They are asking people to call DHS, IRS and ICE to report suspected undocumented immigrants and to target businesses that may hire undocumented immigrants. NSM groups are planning on passing out anti-immigration and neo-Nazi propaganda as well.

Due to the urgency of this year's May Day, many participants are to be expected, at this family-friendly, non-violent event. As with any huge crowd, there is always the potential for disruption, violent or otherwise. Therefore, all available activists are being asked to assist & to be on stand-by. There is a huge need for peacekeepers, vibes-watchers, cameras, bottled water, healthy snacks, and street medics. Thank you.
Let us not be melodramatic or ironic, SB1070 is some fascist shit. For years now ICE has been rounding up our fellow workers, stealing them from their families, children, and communities, often regardless of their immigration status. In 2009, 380,000 people were detained in 350 facilities, and the roundups continue. Detainees are held for months, even years, in conditions often worse than prisons built for "citizens" (although many who are "legally" in the US end up there anyway). Along the US-Mexico border, defense contractors have built massive walls at the safest crossing points, forcing migrant workers to make perilous desert crossings. Many will not make it alive.
A new leaflet being passed out in Seattle. Spread the word about Obama's REAL ideas about immigration reform while building the movement for full rights for all immigrants, now. And wherever you are, march on May Day, the fighting holiday of the world's workers.--Frank
A Press Conference called by Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition in response to the recent passage of SB 1070 in Arizona, which "requires officials and agencies of the state and political subdivisions to fully comply with and assist in the enforcement of federal immigration laws...."

Arizona's recently passed law as of Friday allows police to racially profile and sets dangerous precedent for the rest of the country. How we should respond.
Boycott Arizona until it is given back to Mexico.
With May Day marches occurring in several Northwest cities, the information and call in this Seattle leaflet prepared for the local April immigration reform rally remains very relevant.

This event will have you asking
"What does it mean to have free trade without free immigration?"
Republican candidate Meg Whitman is proposing tighter border enforcement and prosecuting illegal aliens. Stewart Alexander, a PFP Candidate for California Governor, says "Whitman's position on immigration is racist and discriminates against Mexican-Americans."

We urgently need your help to stop the Texas state Board of Education from erasing Cesar Chavez and all Hispanic historical figures from public school text books. Since Texas is such a major textbook purchaser, such a move could have a nationwide impact.
Quote from Jacqueline Stevens: "If you don't have enough evidence to charge someone criminally but you think he's illegal, we can make him disappear." Those chilling words were spoken by James Pendergraph, then executive director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Office of State and Local Coordination, at a conference of police and sheriffs in August 2008. Also present was Amnesty International's Sarnata Reynolds, who wrote about the incident in the 2009 report "Jailed Without Justice" and said in an interview, "It was almost surreal being there, particularly being someone from an organization that has worked on disappearances for decades in other countries. I couldn't believe he would say it so boldly, as though it weren't anything wrong."
If anything, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Act of 2009 is lip service at best.
Benefit movie screening of "Farmingville" at PCC Cascade tomorrow!
At around 9.40pm on Tuesday night, four people on motorbikes opened fire against the police station of Ayia Paraskeui, a north-eastern suburb of Athens. Mainstream media report that five cops have been wounded, with one being in a critical condition. They also report that the type of weapons and ammunition used and the style of the attack refer to either the "Revolutionary Struggle" or the "Revolutionary Sect" - two of the many urban guerrilla groups active in the country lately. It is expected that whatever group is responsible for the attack will release a communique in the next few days.
More info as it comes.
On Wednesday October 28 the actions against JP Morgan Chase in Seattle, Portland, and Bend, Oregon, were a success. Some members of the public told us they would close their accounts. JP Morgan Chase and its cohorts are the real cause of the financial crisis we're in. We are demanding that our states adopt legislation to charge a fee to recipients of more than 1 billion dollars in tax-free federal subsidies within their jurisdictions and use the proceeds for public health services.
Under Bush, immigrant communities lived in a constant state of fear — terrorized by "Homeland Security" agents arresting anyone who appeared Latino and lacked ID. Families were separated, children left parentless, property abandoned, and long-lasting relationships severed.
This scenario — highly reminiscent of the NAZI Gestapo — has changed only slightly under Obama. Some say for the worst. Obama's campaign promise of undoing Bush's immigration strategy was, like nearly every other promise he's made, a blatant lie. Instead, he's adopted the "enforcement first" immigration approach -- the style of John McCain that Obama once mocked.
