Citizen patrols hit Italy streets
Migration not infrequently gets a bad press. Negative stereotypes portraying migrants as "stealing our jobs" or "scrounging off the tax payer" abound in all sections of the media and public opinion. For others, the word "migrant" may evoke images of people at their most vulnerable.
Basics from Times article:
"... Baltazar Cruz speaks only Chatino, barely any Spanish and no English. Last November, she went to Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, Miss., where she lives, to give birth to a baby girl, Rubí. According to documents obtained by the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger, the hospital called the state Department of Human Services (DHS), which ruled that Baltazar Cruz was an unfit mother in part because her lack of English "placed her unborn child in danger and will place the baby in danger in the future." "Rubí was taken from Baltazar Cruz, who now faces deportation." CIRILA BALTAZAR'S DAUGHTER HAS BEEN PLACED WITH A MISSIPPI FAMILY.

Even the most optimistic Obama supporter should cringe in response to the White House's recent "bi-partisan immigration talks." What could Democrats and Republicans possibly have in common over immigration? Quite a lot it turns out.
An enormous sell-out is being prepared for the U.S. immigrant population and Latinos especially — who came out in record numbers in many swing states to vote for Obama last year. Attached to these votes are huge expectations.
On Saturday, May 23, 2009, the racist and anti-immigrant organization Oregonians for Immigration Reform (OFIR) is holding its membership meeting at the Best Western: Mill Creek Inn in Salem, Oregon. OFIR is a statewide group with organizational and political ties to the national white supremacist movement.

The economic crisis which has crashed down on society has already had and for a long time will have disastrous consequences for the lives of the masses, as every worker can see in his daily life or her work. The bourgeois economists themselves admit it: they do not know what the causes of the crisis are - satisfying themselves by blaming the greed of the bankers or excessive financial deregulation - and they do not know when it will end and give way to the long-awaited "economic recovery". The current crisis is the crisis of the capitalist mode of production, incapable of stopping itself, forced to produce always more commodities, at a certain point it comes up against the limits of the market.

Last year noted bigot and repressed dick head Wayne Mayo set his sights on higher office, and decided to pave the way with the blood of immigrants. He wanted to capitalize on the redneck, anti-immigrant nature of the right-wingers he pals around with. So he parked his pompous self outside the Scappoose post office, soliciting signatures to get Measure 5-190 on the ballot. He did manage to get it on the ballot, and alas, it passed by a slim margin. But the poorly written, badly conceived piece of hate legislation will never become law. Here is why, and why it matters.
Well, before 2 days I was discriminated again, so I decided to spread information about institutional racism and fascism in Scandinavia. Discrimination became so wide in society that you should always ask Danish for his/her opinion about East Europeans in Denmark before you gives them place for sleeping or anything in your country.
"The Young Republicans were all dressed up—men in suits and ties, women in dresses—and looked like they were attending a business meeting at the country club. Even though the Young Republicans were all white and most of them came from Wisconsin, I can't say that I related to them much. But I felt even more alien at the meeting of the antiwar committee. The attendees were dressed in a much more Bohemian style and there was a lot of intense talk about politics. And they were Jewish."
I just happened to catch this march coming by me so I followed it for 15 minutes. The information about this event was taken from the calendar right here on Indy Media.
Lets keep building for a powerful, uncompromising May Day...starting...NOW

Last November, sadly, Columbia County voters quietly passed measure 190. While the measure was largely misunderstood and not discussed much, it's one of the most sweeping pieces of anti-immigrant racism to crop up in recent memory. And this Friday, it goes to court.

ICE Raids and Popular Resistance in Flagstaff
By the Time I Get to Arizona By GEORGE CICCIARELLO-MAHER CounterPunch
The Rural Organizing Project, the NW Worker's Justice Project, the ACLU, and others officially filed a complaint today in Columbia County Circuit Court to challenge the racist anti-immigrant Measure 5-190 that was (alas!) passed by Columbia County voters during the recent election. Below is the associated press release. I urge Columbia County residents to get involved in this struggle, as many of our friends and neighbors are already being impacted by this measure. It would also be great for people from other counties to contact the individuals below to see how they can help. Solidarity!
How ICE was confronted in Flagstaff.
This is a good example of great in-your-face direct action done creatively, theatrically - and nonviolently.
Does Oregonians For Immigration Reform (OFIR) have no obligation to respond to its history of palling around with those who speak of "n[****]rs" and "sp[**]s"? Anyone who requests an honest answer to this question is, to OFIR Vice President Rick Hickey's mind, a "dummy". The people of Oregon and beyond deserve far better than such scorn.
A self righteous resident of Columbia County had two anti-immigrant measures added to the ballot out here. One would have required signs proclaiming Columbia County to be an "illegal worker-free zone." That one failed, thank goodness. A second measure, however, mandates a fine of $10,000 for anyone who hires a so-called "illegal alien." Apparently, it could also mandate that the sheriff's office check people's papers. This one passed.
Lots on the ballot besides representatives.
As the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) opened today in Manila, at least 5000 workers from the Philippines and other countries in every region of the world came together in one of the broadest labor mobilizations ever organized in the entire history of the global trade union movement.

For the past few months, members of BTR, the Threewayfight blog, and others have been debating fascist potentials and their significance for a liberatory political project. The questions which this debate provokes lead to the need for an evaluation of current conditions, and an assessment of what has changed since previous high points of struggle. In the midst of this debate, capitalist markets were rattled with what has now become a global economic crisis. We're posting edits from the two sections of the debates here: debates on the crisis, and debates on fascism. We hope that folks find them useful, and will weigh in.

The recent raids in IOWA and Mississippi are a giant step backwards for all workers. They are part of the employers' divide and rule strategy aimed at taking back from all of us the gains that where made during the great mass movements of the 1930's.

US businesses invested $120 billion in Mexico between 1994 and 2006. Only 80,000 jobs were created per year while 730,000 Mexicans pressed on the labor market every year. While migration climbed 95% from 1980 to 1994, it soared an incredible 452% from 1994 to 2006.
