The recent liberal trend, now promoted in Clamor Magazine, of calling rape victims liars who weren't really raped but can't admit to really wanting all that sex is contested.

In a just released police report (pdf), Lou Beres, former head of the Oregon Christian Coalition, finally confessed to the charges that he so vehemently denied last October. Sources from within the family tell us that Lou Beres told the truth because he thought the police report would stay sealed and the statute of limitations were over.
"Camp Suzanne" Open Outside Fort Lewis
Fort Lewis, WA -- On Thursday, August 17th 2006, The Swift Action Network began "Camp Suzanne" outside Fort Lewis in Washington State, in honor of active duty soldier Spc. Suzanne Swift. The organizers' stated goals are to bring attention to the epidemic of sexual assault in the military, and to show support for Suzanne Swift. One of the most polarizing debates, even among progressives and leftists, is that of legalized pristitution. This post is meant to weigh the pros and cons, plus invite additional perspectives.
Some advice to women street performers: 1) Memorize your act, 2) Stand up!, 3) Learn to be loud, 4) Don't be a Linda McCartney!, 5) Don't resort to cheesey signs. 6) Grow emotional armor, 7) Excel at something, 8) Learn to perform clothed, 9) Do not let men choose or arrange your material, 10) Lead, don't follow! This reporter had the misfortune of following this pig around for an article. On this job she was subjected to overt verbal sexism, physical assault, and she became a semi-witness to the rape of an 18 yr old virgin girl.
...July 19 events in some two dozen cities worldwide called for regime
change in Iran. And the annual "World Pride" march —incongruously themed
"Love without Borders"—was scheduled to take place in occupied Jerusalem
on Aug. 10, making Israel appear to be a bastion of liberty in the
Middle East. But Israel—the apartheid, theocratic imperialist power
threatening the entire Middle East—was blasting the population and
infrastructure of Gaza and pounding Lebanon with U.S.-supplied bunker
buster bombs...Like the German Homosexual Eman cipation movement, which
was derailed when it supported is own ruling class on the eve of World
War I, any progressive movement that does not fight its own imperialist
bosses and oppose a war for an empire built on super-profits surrenders
its independence and kneels before its own oppressor class. The gay
liberation struggles in the U.S. during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s
gained power from organizing against the Korean and Vietnam wars.

In Jackson Mississippi the last abortion clinic in the state is being hounded by religious right and overtly racist groups to no avail. The clinic remains open and women are still recieving abortions.
Egg on the Mercury's Face:
The chickens have come home to roost OR little fox news gets caught in the hen house
Which came first the chicken or the egg? Well the egg came first on the Mercury's face, followed shortly by the chickens coming home to roost. Of course, I'm speaking in response to the Letters (Not) to the Editor in the latest evacuation of that poo-poo tunnel called the Portland Mercury. I'm guessing this is the kind of language that their readers are familiar with and can best understand. Now let's get down to poultry.
Behind the rape and murder of an Iraqi girl and her family lies a far larger story of what's happened to women in Iraq since they were 'liberated' by the Bush administration.
Several years ago I was part of many Community responses to sexual assaults. I also came out with my own story - or part of it, anyhow. I told people about how one person had raped me, but not about the community pattern of silence about my partners abusive behavior, and scorn for me for putting up with it, that preceded my rape. And, after I told that story, I kept silent about many others.

At St. Francis Church Saturday, July 8, a new film, "On The Edge," will have its first public screening in Portland. The documentary, by an Indymedia filmmaker formerly of Portland and now based in Tucson, concerns the killings of hundreds of women in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juarez. Director Steev Hise will be present for discussion afterward, as well as guest speaker Dan Denvir from Portland Central America Solidarity Committee.
Spc. Swift, facing a redeployment to Iraq while serving under the command of the same individuals now under investigation for rape and sexual harassment, chose to go absent without leave rather than subjugate herself to the horrors she experienced during her first tour of duty.
WHEN IS ENOUGH ENOUGH??????? The scream I hold in all the time is threatening to erupt. But when it starts, i'm afraid it will never end. Save us, for we are doomed....
This story is specially dedicated to those of you out there who still defend the City's trashy weeklies -- "I only read the Willy Week and the Mercury"; that is, to those whose addiction to the corporate media still hasn't been broken. I'd like you to take a look at the current cover of the Portland Mercury and tell me how it's not just f'n trash. Not that anyone should expect much from a publication that stays afloat selling sex ads.
People of Olympia! Are you down for womens rights in the 21st century? The time to act is now!
Love In Action is a Memphis-based organization which focuses on queer conversion (turning gays and lesbians straight). Love In Action runs a ex-gay boot camp which forcibly attempts to convert queer minors at the request of their parents. One year ago, a teen forced into the program reported on his myspace blog that a 'counselor' advised him to kill himself rather than leave the program so that he could be good with god.
Spc Suzanne Swift, now in a military brig in Oregon, inspired a rally at the Oakland Military Recruitment Center at Broadway and 21st Streets on Friday, June 23rd. Here's a report from the rally.
The Indians grew squashes along with corn and beans.
And they found that squashes could be "in-between."
Yes, they knew as I do, if you know what I mean,
That people and squashes can be in-between.
Yes, people, like squashes, can be in-between.
Eugene Army soldier Suzanne Swift, who refused a second deployment to Iraq late last year, has been arrested. Her mother, Sarah Rich, has been an outspoken war opponent. She was on KOPT radio this morning reiterating the reasons her daughter declined to return to her unit when ordered: post-traumatic stress disorder, opposition to the war, and the constant threat of sexual harassment and abuse by her superior officers.

Ambiguous language causes some confusion in the queer community regarding inclusion of trans people.
I just lowered my anxiety level by cheerfully circling around and around the couple of blocks at Vancouver and NE Broadway to spew venom and spite at the idiot Xtian standing on the corner with giant anti-choice signs. He is just below the giant lacrosse team billboard, can't miss him! I truly love disturbing this sort of Jebus loving, patriarchy huggin' shitheads. If you're in the neighborhood, swing by and unleash your anger!!
The fascist Christians in the White House sought to rally their Christian hate mongering bigots. The Christofascists failed.

I am looking for information on how to organize a pro-choice march, preferably an enormous one, in Portland this summer. I've never organized a march before, so I'm looking for advice, ideas, support, and some idea of how much interest is out there. In a perfect world, thousands and thousands will show up to let our government know where we stand.

One year I was doing a song called "Vasectomy," and the signer was signing "Vasectomy, what a vas deferens it would be!" And the sign for vasectomy was this sort of scissor snipping right at the groin, which was entertaining. But then I brought Hacki Ginda into the mix, to mime it. Hacki was jump-roping with his genitalia, while the signer battled to keep up with the vasectomy signs...I don't know, it seemed so wholesome at the time!
For the purposes of this short paper it will suffice to restate the obvious and wonder how the health of modern human society could have been described as anything other than terminally ill. Society is only an expression of its component parts (people) and it is in that component that the overall health of any society can be measured. Accordingly, behavioural modification in a large group of people would alter the character and course of a society or nation. It is the behavioural modifiers that deserve attention.
As Mother's Day approaches, local families ask you stand with them and urge The Register-Guard to update its birth announcement policy, which currently excludes same-sex parents.
Pornography is changing the nature of physical affection.
This was my response to the expert. In a lot of ways I agree with his basic premise. However, I have very strong opinions that differ from what he is saying.

I suppose, by now, everyone's heard the news. Chief Foxworth has been accused of "sexual misconduct" by a woman who bolsters her complaints with very graphic, very private emails which he wrote to her. I am very conflicted about this news.

The right to abortion was won in the United States in 1973 through a mass struggle in the streets that culminated in the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. A radicalized movement for women's rights, born out of the movement against the Vietnam War and other struggles for social justice at home, was sickened by the injustice of women being butchered in illegal back alley abortions and saw the right of women to control their own bodies as fundamental in the struggle for women's equality.
Kudos to Cecilia Fire Thunder and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for figuring out an amazing course of action and sticking it to the man in South Dakota. I do not know if Ms. Fire Thunder was the same woman from the Pine Ridge reservation who mentioned to me that it is difficult, there, for women to even get normal reproductive care, but this is a step in the right direction both for the nation's reservations and for abortion rights. If the government realizes it cannot stop reproductive rights, maybe it will stop passing these kinds of laws. The problem remains that South Dakota is a big, big state. Let's keep working on finding these ingenious solutions until abortion is accessible to even the poorest woman, or even those without job flexibility or sick leave.
