The only plausible explanation for global warming is human activity. So we should ask the obvious question: Who profits from the activity that causes global warming and who funds the anti-science global-warming denialist groups?
Coal export trains and barges through the Pacific Northwest -- including the Gorge and Portland -- have many risks: pollution from coal dust and diesel polluting the air we breathe and the water we drink; noisy mile-long coal trains cutting through dozens of communities; and coal that's burned abroad contributing to dangerous global warming.
Cascadians Against Coal organization kicks off.
Americans love hamburgers -- we eat about three burgers a week. But what are the hidden environmental costs?

Cancel the Consultation, Stop the Road and save the environment
He was always a maverick. In the seventies and eighties, Binswanger taught economics at the Swiss University of St. Gallen and became known as an ecologist and critic of uncontrolled growth. In 1985, his book "Money and Magic" presented a profound interpretation of Goethe's "Faust." The progress of civilization provokes ecological and social losses. It is an open question whether positive or negative consequences of growth predominate.. Without growth there is no capitalism but with growth the risk of finance crashes increases.. Capitalism has to be reformed in such a way that it will be less aggressive and less vulnerable..

The U.S. heat wave is slowly shaking the foundations of American politics. It may take years for the deep rumble to evolve into an above ground, institution-shattering earthquake, but U.S. society has changed for good.

At the edge of the world and the end of civilization, we stand on the abyss of ecological collapse, mass extinction and catastrophic change. Our bioregion is under an assault by corporations and the cancer that is consumerism. This assault is a series of battles from the theft of the water commons by Nestlé. The theft of coal from Rockies and its spreading of black dust on across our lands on trains headed to the coast. The mismanagement of the US government and theft of public funds by Bechtel of nuclear waste at Hanford as well as a denial of contamination of the Columbia watershed. The proposal of fracking in southwest Washington State. Mass denial or even cover up of radiation from Fukushima in water, milk, food, tuna and so forth. All the while the society is under attack with tuition costs, public transportation fare increases, social safety-net cuts, debt increases, foreclosures and a health insurance system that is nothing else but a pyramid scheme. While drones fly over head as police surveillance increases and the death toll mounts in wars overseas. On October 7th will be the eleventh year of the American Imperial War in Afghanistan. Maybe its time for a paradigm shift before global climatic and ecological collapse! Free Cascadia, decolonize your mind and liberate your spirit!

We will also explore other areas of social transformation, including education, healthcare, and direct citizen participation in the political process. Plus trips to beaches, parks, and other sites of interest.

City Council hearing on water rates
I have a new flick at The Hollywood Theatre presented as part of the Sound and Vision Fest and The EFF Fest, the new experimental film festival in Portland
This is a new piece I made, Charismatic Megafauna.
It is 50 minutes long and consists of footage that was shot by biologists during the wolf capture (in Canada) and reintroduction in to the USA in the mid 90's. There also is 16mm footage that I shot when I lived in Chicago in the early 80's with a wolfdog.
This piece gives you a behind the scenes look at the reintroduction.

from tom dispatch ...
Just days later, his long-time literary agent Richard Kahlenberg wrote me that Chick had left a final document on his computer, something he had been preparing in the months before he knew he would die, and asked if TomDispatch would run it. Indeed, we would. It's not often that you hear words almost literally from beyond the grave -- and eloquent ones at that, calling on all Ecotopians, converted or prospective, to consider the dark times ahead. Losing Chick's voice and his presence is saddening. His words remain, however, as do his books, as does the possibility of some version of the better world he once imagined for us all. Tom

Independent researchers who have been trying to warn people for over a year are finally being heard. Much of that can be attributed to citizen journalists, who have realized mainstream media dropped the ball on this a long time ago.
Tim Bennett, middle-class white guy, started waking up to the global environmental nightmare in the mid-1980s. But life was so busy with raising kids and pursuing the American dream that he never got around to acting on his concerns. Until now...
Occupy Portland recently organized a Rally in Richland Washington, "speaking out directly against the failure of the cleanup at Hanford Nuclear Reservation..... raising the question: is enough being done to clean up the most contaminated site in America?"
Selected Speakers From Hanford Rally
First, you accept the biological reality that death begets life on this planet and that all life (including us!) is really just solar energy temporarily stored in an impermanent form. Second, you combine this realization with that cherished human trait of compassion and choose ethically raised food, vegetable, grain and/or meat. And third, you give thanks.

If the fertilizers, partial irrigation [in part provided by oil energy], and pesticides were withdrawn, corn yields, for example, would drop from 130 bushels per acre to about 30 bushels.
However, this is assuming legumes can also be used to provide a little nitrogen. Without the use of legumes, yields would decline to about 16 bushels per acre. This is about the corn yield in developing countries.
Last week Governor Kitzhaber announced he was requesting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a full environmental review of all six proposed coal export facilities in the Northwest. Although this is great news, Oregon is firmly in the crosshairs of Big Coal's plans to export millions of tons of coal to Asia. And the state of Oregon has just a month to make a decision about a dirty coal barging project on the Columbia River.
Kingsolver (2001) describes these killings very effectively. "I've watched enough harvests to know that cutting a wheat field amounts to more decapitated bunnies under the combine than you would believe."
WHAT: Soaked in Cascadia is part of "Climate Impacts Day," an international effort led by 350.org that will bring together over
1,000 events in 150 countries in an attempt to "connect the dots" between local, extreme weather events, and community-driven solutions to address the broader climate crisis.
Hundreds of Portlanders will be gathering at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Monday, May 7th at 12 noon. One of the featured speakers will be Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Other speakers will include a tribal leader, a physician, a waterkeeper from China, and local activists. Here in Oregon, there is no single bigger threat to clean energy and our climate than coal exports. People will be walking with a banner to the Steel Bridge, which is a potential route for coal trains to cross through Portland.
