The UNCRC infringes upon parental authority and represents a massive intrusion by the state into family affairs. It has the potential to radically alter parent-child relationships. The UN definitely has no business telling parents how to raise their children and neither does the government unless there is evidence of neglect or abuse.

Edgar Allan Poe, poet, novelist and literary critic, died in 1849, age 40, under mysterious circumstances, in Baltimore, MD. The British author, Peter Ackroyd, insightfully captures the trials and tribulations of this great man of letters in his latest tome, "Poe: A Life Cut Short." Poe invented the modern detective story and his poem, "The Raven," is a classic in the genre. Ackroyd reveals Poe's battle with the bottle, and adds a wrinkle: his aversion to sex!

Corruption in healthcare systems remains a global problem. Corruption is depriving people of needed medical care and promoting the development of drug-resistant disease, creating an ever-spiraling cycle of worsening health conditions. Corruption in the health sector deprives those most in need of essential medical care and helps spawn drug-resistant strains of deadly diseases.

I got on KBOO this morning with Scott Forster (spelling?) and got a minute or so to plug portland.indymedia and bring up the problem of propaganda and thought control in our educational system, reaching perhaps 50,000 listeners. I figured it might be good to provide a few links and excerpts from Noam Chomsky, whom I was able to mention as having a facetious attitude towards those with "a good education." There's also a link to an overview of "the propaganda model" and, last but not least, John Taylor Gatto's excelling distillation of institutional education itself in his online book on the history of u.s. education.

What are some options for decent loans with good repayment options?
Here are some more snapshots of the debates and actions that are continuing across Italy. Also important is the discussion that comes from the Wave re: the murder of Alexis in Athens last weekend and Greek plans for education reform. Not only this but the actions around house occupations in Rome and the idea to re-occupy the recently evicted Horus social centre.
Lets show Greece some solidarity.

I found some interesting book list on a peak oil website. I think any material on survival is mui importante at this juncture. Of course you can buy these books anywhere. It is a given the country is tanking. While the fall of this country or capitalism is much desired, anyone could have seen it was inevitable. Adam Smith may has well be smoking crack when he wrote, "The Wealth of Nations." Actually if he did, he might have come up with a saner economic philosophy. Hey, though; that book was written 200 years ago. Isn't it a little OUT OF DATE! Still, for me, I don't gloat over stupidity anymore. It is just tragic, really, how human nature is and how we humans cling to tradition, even if it kills us. Yet the plains tribes had many stories warning of the dangers of unchecked adherence to tradition. Read Seven Arrows, by Hyemeyosts Storm to here the allegorical stories and the solutions to this human glitch. We decimated those cultures. Just shows the karma which comes around. All people has wisdom and uh, oh, we've wiped them out. Egoism, ethnocentrism and greed are our heritage though; they are the worst vices. This is what capitalism was borne out of. Legitimizing the lowest common denominator of human nature under the guise of a God approved ideology.
Karl W.B. Schwarz (runnding for prez 2008?) projected himself when he dared to call my late husband a loser. Here is the most intensive research you can get on the internet about this person to this date.
The national demonstration of Italian faculties and universities in mobilization filled the streets today in Rome. The size of the demonstration was impressive. It's impossible to say how many people there were. The newspapers quote some organizers saying "more than 200.000″ which might be true.
I have been looking back at the history of the effort to root out Schumacher Furs and I wonder where they are today.
In about 40 german cities all in all 100 000 pupils went on strike. they took to the streets and occupied schools and universities. They protested against bad learning conditions, an education reform ("Turboabitur") and against the will of the state to form an elite of pupils and students.

The next big day of student protests in Italy is this Friday. There will be a mass demonstration in Rome, organized by students and universitarians, independently of parties and unions. Ten thousands of people took part in the INTO protest at the Dail this evening. From the crowd it was obvious that as well as teachers many parents, secondary school puplis and college students had turned up to show solidarity.
An hour ago the Gelmini decree was voted by the Senate into law. Immediately there was
a big reaction from students across Italy. In Rome they also had to confront fascist student
organizations. The fascists attacked the protesters but were also counter-attacked. In Milano, an unauthorized demo of 2000 highschool students traversed the city center where and was charged at several points by riot cops. This is gonna be a hot day. Tomorrow there is a general strike in the public education sector.

Anyone got any useful info on the recent wave of protests by students and union members in Italy in the last month? 'Last week university students and lecturers joined for the first time in a growing wave of protests against cuts and reforms imposed by Berlusconi's young education minister, Mariastella Gelmini. Following sit-ins and marches, the main trade union federations have called for a one-day general education strike on October 30' (The Guardian).
Grant HS is hosting their Booster Club's major fundraiser on Saturday, October 25th, and they need help. This money covers travel, misc. and uniform expenses for over 70 clubs and teams from the usual sports clubs to the debate team, glee club, and more.
