Anti-fascists Expose Neo-Nazis in the Oregon Black Metal Scene

On September 2 to September 5, the white supremacist organization Volksfront International held their "Althing" gathering on private land in Missouri, at the "Samuel Weaver Memorial Hall" approximately an hour outside of St. Louis. Rose City Antifascists noted with interest that one of the musical acts billed for Volksfront's gathering was the Oregon "National Socialist Black Metal" (NSBM) band Immortal Pride. Immortal Pride is part of a network of racist musical acts allied to Blood & Honour American Division, which is in turn largely guided by Volksfront. This is the first time that Immortal Pride has played a major neo-Nazi gathering. In recognition of this development, Rose City Antifascists wish to draw attention to the main forces in the neo-Nazi black metal underground in Oregon today, with the hope that they can be countered from both within and without the metal scene.

John Waters Pays Homage to his Role Models (Book Review)

John Waters is a Baltimore Icon! He's a film director, producer, author and a recovering Catholic. The then-Maryland Censor Board panned many of his early flicks, "as pure garbage." Waters is openly gay. His latest book is "Role Models." In it, Waters reveals the people who have influenced and have helped to shape his own complex persona. Waters confesses in his tome that he voted for Barack Obama because "he 'was' a friend of Bill Ayers!"

Alvarez’ “Storyteller” Has Characters Galore (Book Review)

Rafael Alvarez' "Storyteller" is a delight to read. It's mostly about larger than life characters from Baltimore, MD. But, that doesn't mean you have to be from there to enjoy it as much as I did. Alvarez was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun for 23 years (1978-2001). He literally covered the waterfront, and if necessary, he did the obits. "Storyteller" is made up of 67 newspaper articles, two essays and three well-honed short stories.

Rudacille’s Tome: A Must-Read for Labor Buffs (Review)

In 1959, Bethlehem' Sparrows Point plant, outside Baltimore, was "the largest steelworks in the world." In its heyday, it employed 36,000 workers. Bethlehem went into bankruptcy in 2001, and many of its retirees at the "Point" got screwed out of their benefits. Deborah Rudacille's book, "Roots of Steel," recreates, via compelling "oral histories," the history of the Point; the collapse of Bethlehem, an industrial titan; and the baleful impact that it had on the lives of its union workers and communities that they lived in.

Bad Attitudes and Dirty Money: Black Blocs, Anarchism, and the World
From the Black Bloc Papers: "It is a strange pill to swallow, the notion that some of your peers, people you don't know, represent your interests. It is an old tradition, it has given most of us the title of civilians, and it has made others our rulers. Although each life, upon a short and close look, obviously contains its own unfathomable trajectory it has been the way of the modern world to pigeon-hole and harness the energy of each life towards historically questionable ends. This practice, abusing the young in order to eternalize the old, has led us to a point in history in which lives are spent for the sake of the machine's continuing momentum. Inane, insane, or otherwise, we all go through the hopper from our birth to our determined, predictable, and sometimes socially necessary, death."

Albert Camus: A Stranger No More (Book Review)

Two authors, Robert Zaretsky and Elizabeth Hawes, have resurrected Albert Camus, the late French Algerian novelist and philosopher, in their just released books. I'm recommending both of their tomes. I think their efforts contribute, in different ways, to enhancing Camus' literary legacy. Camus' courageous moralizing against the excesses of the ideologues of his days is timely. Let's face it, we too live in an era where crazed warmongers are running amuck.

Limbo is a crappy place to live, even for free...
while a free citizen being not jailed, finding employment asks of me for its application more effort and bureaucracy than I seem to be able to complete, finding the state is more satiated with me as its beneficiary than doing work I'd like to do and that I have the motivation to complete works to the end of destroying this system that I am benefitting from, I'm starting to get irritated.
