With increasing public awareness of government foreknowledge of the 9.11 attacks, the White House was forced to admit that it did have warning. While he has now acknowledged that he did have warning, Bush insists that he did not know about the possibility of suicide attacks and that their warnings were for 'conventional' hijackings.
This position is also indefensible as numerous foreign governments before Sept. 11th gave specific warnings of suicide attacks using planes on buildings. For example, German Intelligence, BND, warned both the CIA and Israel in June that Middle Eastern terrorists were 'planning to hijack commercial aircraft to use as weapons to attack important symbols of American and Israeli culture.' Also, German police, monitoring the phone calls of a jailed Iranian man, learned the man was telephoning U.S. intelligence agencies last summer to warn of an imminent attack on the World Trade Center in the week of Sept. 9 According to a story in Izvestia on Sept. 12, Russian intelligence warned the U.S. last summer that as many as 25 suicide pilots were training for suicide missions involving the crashing of airliners into important targets. Other direct warnings were received by the U.S. government and have been documented Bush's claim that there was no specific foreknowledge of suicide attacks is a lie. Demand the truth.  On Wednesday, May 15th, 7pm Pacific time, "What's the Verdict?" with Wendell Harper and Amanda Elliott will feature Delmart "Mike" Vreeland, the former U.S. Navy Lieutenant who tried to warn American and Canadian officials of an impending attack. One of his attorneys, Rocco Gallati, renowned refugee status and human rights lawyer, will also be present to discuss court records in Vreeland's case. Vreeland now has temporary refugee status in Canada, after all the charges there were dropped and is fighting extradition to the U.S, where he believes he will be assassinated. Speaking on April 19 to a meeting of the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, FBI Chief Robert Mueller said: "In our investigation, we have not uncovered a single piece of paper -- either here in the United States or in the treasure trove of information that has turned up in Afghanistan and elsewhere -- that mentioned any aspect of the Sept. 11 plot."
Even though the FBI and other U.S. intelligence agencies have not turned up any concrete evidence of how the 9.11 attacks were planned and carried out, they insist that they have no doubt of who was responsible. After seven months, FBI assertions aside, no one else has provided anything like proof for the U.S. Government's official story either. Meanwhile, a significant amount of evidence is being uncovered that contradicts the official story. There are no Arab names on the publically released flight lists, no bodies, and the perpetrators reportedly used fake ID's. What is the proof that the FBI even knows who the perpetrators were? Quotes in the Washington Post from the flight instructors who trained the alleged pilots indicate that they were not capable of flying the hijacked planes. The official story has been created by a corporate media machine with defense industry ties and a presidential administration that stole an election. Why are these entities considered reliable sources? Isn't it time for a serious investigation that does not presuppose that the government/media's explanation, if it can be called that, is the only "real" one? Various websites have collected a large amount of compelling and credible evidence indicating that the official story of what happened on 9.11 is not accurate. The Chief of the FBI has admitted that there is no paper trail to support the official story. People like activist-author Michael Moore and independent journalist Mike Ruppert have been speaking to overflow crowds around the country as they ask incisive questions about 9.11. A Congresswoman has publically demanded an investigation into 9.11, and has specifically named Bush and Cheney as having possible involvement, which is an inspiring act of courage in these times. Yet the Indymedia network -- with the exception of a few local sites -- has ignored the story.
Why? Truthout has conducted a poll, and presented the results to various Congresspeople. Truthout asked if they would support a full investigation that also included the executive branch. Besides Cynthia McKinney (D-GA), two more Congresspeople, U.S. Representative Major R. Owens (D-NY) and U.S. Representative Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) have said they support such an investigation. [ Read More ] Meanwhile, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution ran a poll asking people if they believed the government had no foreknowledge of 9.11 and, unexpectedly, nearly 50% of the respondents said no. The paper quickly published an editorial piece about how the poll was meaningless. If that's true, why did they hold the poll in the first place? Will the paper henceforth cease citing polls in its stories since they are not, in its opinion, accurate? While such a reaction from the commercial media is not unexpected, what is surprising is the almost total lack of coverage that the call for an independent 9.11 investigation is receiving from the Indymedia network. Why is one of the most important investigative stories of our time being ignored by one of the most vibrant and increasingly essential new sources of our time?  Since 9.11, many people have asked the question, "What did the U.S. know, and when did it know it?" Mike Ruppert is one of the most prominent investigators of this question (see copvcia.com), and he delivered lectures in Portland on April 12 and 13, and in Eugene on April 14. portland indymedia reporters interviewed Ruppert in both cities. About Mike Ruppert: Ruppert's history of muckraking goes back 25 years. In 1977, as an LAPD narcotics investigator, he discovered that the CIA was trafficking drugs. As an independent journalist in the time since, he has targeted issues such as the motivations and atrocities of U.S. foreign policy, the shenanigans of the global financial system, and the continuing complicity of the CIA in international drug trade. Ruppert is hardly alone in the allegations he makes. Indeed, these issues are the bread-and-butter of 'the Left' and are taken quite seriously by organizations like Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, publications like the Nation, and thinkers such as Noam Chomsky. Attacks from 'the Left': Yet, when the subject is 9.11, some of the most shrill attacks on Ruppert have come from 'the Left'. Even the websites of the quasi-anarchist Indymedia network have almost entirely ignored 9.11 investigations in their feature sections, though posts on the topic to their newswires have met with both accolades and criticism. "Criticism", though, is too generous a word to describe rhetoric that outright dismisses any 9.11 investigation without examining the evidence at all. Ruppert's thesis: Ruppert's thesis is simple: The government is lying to us about 9.11. He does not claim that the government orchestrated the attacks, only that it had foreknowledge of them and did not act to prevent them. Such a scenario has precedent in the example of Pearl Harbor. Ruppert's sources: For those whose minds are open to the idea that the U.S. Government doesn't always tell the truth, Ruppert offers a detailed, well-researched, carefully-built case. His evidence is drawn exclusively from mainstream media reports, government documents, and court testimony. "I refuse to speculate," he said in Eugene on Sunday. "That's journalistic suicide." Can the official 9.11 narrative as put forth by the U.S. Government and the corporate media stand up to the same rigorous standards of proof? Perhaps Ruppert's critics should start there. Others are asking questions: Ruppert is not alone in asking questions about 9.11. Cynthia McKinney has called for a full government investigation, and Michael Moore feels the media should be doing more digging, too. Excerpts from a report on last Friday's peace rally in Portland: "The weekly rallies are still going strong. Last week drew up to 300 people because of Israel's decimation of Palestinian cities. Perhaps due to that, and due to this week's payment, or non-payment, of our taxes, we again had a strong showing, around 100 people. "The rally began at 5:00, as it does, with soap box speeches. This week the War Resister's League brought the issue that our tax dollars pay for the military, militarism, and military aid to Israel. Tax resisters presented two checks to two groups working for peace, redirecting their tax money from the US military machine... We marched on the sidewalks with drum accompaniment to the federal building [where] we burned tax forms to the boom of drums and the chant 'Not in my name. Not with my money.' Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney has courageously dared to publically demand a thorough investigation into the events of 9/11 and whether the Bush administration had advance warning of the attacks and did not act upon them. She has immediately been attacked on many fronts. The White House dismissed her requests with ridicule. On Capitol Hill, the response was more dramatic. Rep. Charlie Norwood (R-Ga.) said all GOP members of the state delegation should sever communication with McKinney until she retracts her statements. Others have called her judgement and character into question, while others have demanded that she be investigated. On Friday, 4/12, Congresswoman McKinney issued a further statement expanding on her previous comments. She presents a solid and cohesive argument saying; "We deserve to know what went wrong on September 11 and why. After all, we hold thorough public inquiries into rail disasters, plane crashes, and even natural disasters in order to understand what happened and to prevent them from happening again or minimizing the tragic effects when they do. Why then does the Administration remain steadfast in its opposition to an investigation into the biggest terrorism attack upon our nation?" She goes on to say: "It should be easy for this Administration to explain fully to the American people in a thorough and methodical way why we are being asked to make these sacrifices and if, indeed, these sacrifices will make us more secure. If the Administration cannot articulate these answers to the American people, then the Congress must. This is not a time for closed-door meetings and this is not a time for secrecy. America's credibility, both with the world and with her own people, rests upon securing credible answers to these questions. There is an old Persian proverb: "If you do not like the image in the mirror, do not break the mirror, break your face." It is time to pull our collective head out of the sand, take a hard look in the mirror, and then act. Did elements of the US government have prior knowledge of, or actively participate in, the 9.11 attacks? If so, to what degree? These are questions worthy of serious investigation. Start researching "what really happened" on 9.11, and you'll find a large body of facts and questions suggesting that the story we have been told by the government and corporate media is in large part a fabrication.  Is the "war on terrorism" like World War II? The Bush administration has repeatedly roused rhetoric evocative of "the good war" when attempting to justify current policies. Comparing the September 11, 2001, attacks to Pearl Harbor and giving the alleged enemies the appellation "axis of evil" are two examples. (Germany, Japan and Italy were known as the "Axis Powers" during World War II.) Examining history, other comparisons emerge, less useful for promotional purposes: civilian deaths covered-up or underplayed, shrill patriotism draped over corporate interests, media acquiescence to the government line at the expense of factual reporting. These last three behaviors as they were committed during World War II are exemplified in the U.S. atomic attacks on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945, shortly before the end of the war. The gruesome effects of using nuclear weapons on people were concealed by the government, but only with the cooperation of the U.S. media. The corporate-colonial motivations behind fighting a war in the Pacific against the Japanese were not discussed and are still largely unexamined. In fact, the full, true story of Hiroshima and Nagasaki?or World War II for that matter?has yet to enter mainstream American consciousness?but again, only with the cooperation of the U.S. media. This ignorance has been highly beneficial to the military-industrial complex for decades, and continues to serve it now, in the current war. Corvallis: Activists march against war and corporate globalization
Student and community activists staged a mass die-in and march on Friday to protest the current U.S. military campaign in Afghanistan and the continuing onslaught of corporate globalization. The protest coincided with the opening day of meetings among key segments of the Group of 20 (G20), the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank in Ottawa, Ontario. Organizers also linked their efforts to this weekend's annual demonstration and mass civil disobedience at Fort Benning, Georgia against the School of the Americas, an institution notorious for training dictators and death squads throughout Latin America. The march brought together a multigenerational group of more than eighty people despite a constant downpour of rain and one of the march organizers characterized the turnout as "extraordinarily successful." This action demonstrated that dissent is brewing not only in the metropolitan areas of the United States, but in predominantly conservative communities like Corvallis. Monday night approximately 175 Portland citizens attended a community panel and briefing on the USA PATRIOT Act at the Central Lutheran Church. The USA PATRIOT Act (an acronym for the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism), a statute that was quickly passed by Congress and signed on October 26th by President George Bush, severely threatens constitutional protections, especially for immigrants, and the expanded definition of "domestic terrorism" poses a particular peril to activists everywhere. Following the speakers was a panel represented by local activists, including Kathleen Jergens, who spoke candidly about the Police Joint Terrorism Task Force and Civilians against Police Spying, Craig Rosebraugh, a former spokesperson for Earth Liberation Front and currently under subpoena to the House Grand Jury, and attorney Stu Sugarman, who spoke specifically about grand juries, their objectives to co-erce and intimidate, and the details of the process. Eugene: Protesters clash with cops Portland: Peace Vigil with Anti-WTO Protest

 U.S. government officials and corporate media correspondents are suggesting that the coming days or hours could bring a declaration of war from Congress and "overwhelming" U.S. military strikes against foreign targets. In contrast to this bellicose mood, over 2300 people gathered in Portland on Sunday, September 16, to memorialize those who died in last Tuesday's attacks on the East Coast, and to demand that the U.S. government not go to war in response. Though this march was unpermitted, Portland police allowed it to take over the streets, and blocked intersections for the crowd. Signs, banners, and speakers all expressed messages of peace, in contrast to the drive for vengeance being encouraged by the government and much of the population. The newly-formed Portland Peaceful Response made the call for the event. The coalition decribes itself as "individuals and groups from many diverse backrounds united for a singlular cause: to see a peaceful resolution to these events, and to promote and protect the peace of those who may be unduly discriminated against as a result."
