Today marks 5 years since September 11th 2001 and the infamous events of that day. Though the U.S. government quickly imposed its story of what happened upon the people of this nation and the world, a trickle of voices asked questions and had doubts. That trickle became a stream and is now a river moving with a power that can no longer be shut up. A significant percentage of the people of the country believe or suspect that the US government had a hand in 9/11. There was a concerted 9-11 Truth activist response to the premiere of Stone's new film. Civil disobedience was planned in a few states, legal leafletting occurred in others. The mainstream press took some interest in the actions. Theater managers were so supportive of the leafletting in California, that activists were even invited to table in the lobby of one theater which boldly asked "Was 9-11 an Inside Job?" on its marquee.
The film is painful to watch. When Nicholas Cage and Oliver Stone attended a packed pre-release premiere held in San Francisco, a stunned audience failed to even clap at the end, until prodded by the studio sponsors; Cage and Stone disappeared and no one was able to question them. A free premiere in the East Bay drew a scant 80 people. At the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, where I saw it, and was invited to table in the lobby, the audience was pitifully small, and the consensus was that despite all the hype, media coverage and rave reviews, the film would be a box office flop.
Hey conservatives who are so stoked that Bush is "keeping us safe," looks like the Hunt for Osama Bin Laden isn't such a big deal after all. The CIA is closing down the special unit that originated in the Clinton Administration (because he was "soft on terror"), then received copious slabs of pork from Bush to make it look like bin Laden was responsible for 9-11, only to be ignored when it produced evidence that bin Laden was cornered in Tora Bora, so he could get away.
The most recent article on [9/11] published in Scientific American is a despicable piece by one of the magazine's stars, Michael Shermer. He postures proudly "debunking" our efforts for research into the World Trade Center demolition and for a more coherent version of the truth. (The event itself, the collapse of the towers seen as a demolition, seems to be almost a certainty by now.) Michael Shermer's article "debunking" that line of thought consists of 90% political sloganeering, cultural cliches, and "setting the mood" to predispose the reader with context that ridicules our explorations, and then adds 10% of pseudo-science. It's unbelievable that he is one of the leading establishment scientists of our time.

When asked if I would continue to post photo essays here on indymedia during my extended travels through Europe, I replied that I doubted that I would have anything to post. However, on my first night in Berlin (my first stop) the contrast between the way Americans and Germans look at their recent past startled me so that I knew that I had to produce this photo essay. Billionaire philanthropist Jimmy Walter and WTC survivor William Rodriguez this week embarked on a groundbreaking trip to Caracas Venezuela in which they met with with the President of the Assembly and will soon meet with Venezuelan President himself Hugo Chavez in anticipation of an official Venezuelan government investigation into 9/11.
Rodriguez was the last survivor pulled from the rubble of the north tower of the WTC, and was responsible for all stairwells within the tower. Rodriguez represented family members of 9/11 victims and testified to the 9/11 Commission that bombs were in the north tower but his statements were completely omitted from the official record.
I lived in New York in the 1960's, when the twin towers were planned and just going up. The 60's was an era of intense urban destruction and frantic build-up in New York. Some of the midtown areas cleared and targeted for "development" looked like they had been bombed, while other outlying residential areas, red-lined by the banks, decayed into abandoned free-fire zones.
I left New York in 1971 before the twin towers became the prominent feature of the Manhattan skyline. They were not part of my New York, I am glad to say, for I think I would have resented this development as I did some other new structures, like the hideous Pan Am Building that was stuck up over Park Avenue and Grand Central Station. The area targeted for the WTC included a neighborhood I loved called Radio Row. The district began in the 1920's and grew into an experimenter's dream world of many blocks where exotic surplus electronics, the fall-out of defense technology, spilled out into the street. The electronics storekeepers organized. God knows how many other downtown communities organized. They got little coverage in The Times. All resistance was crushed.
Looking at the onslaughts we face, it's obvious that this administration's primary source of war-making, rights-taking, vote-raking power is still and always has been the "official 9/11 story." The exquisitely timed "surprise attack" it portrays instantly justified what we now know was a long planned agenda to take us into endless war, crippling debt and constitutional twilight. There is now an enormous amount of scholarly evidence and expert testimony that a) clearly demonstrates the official 9/11 story is a sham, and b) supports the millions of New Yorkers who, according to a recent Zogby poll, believe that top US officials "consciously" allowed the attacks to happen and that we desperately need a new investigation now. July 23, 2005 -- House Hearing on anniversary of 911 Report -- Representative Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) chaired a 9-hour hearing in the Cannon House Office Building on the anniversary of the release of the widely-criticized 911 Commission Report. Witnesses, including 911 family members, former intelligence officers, former diplomats, politicians, academicians, and legal experts were uniform in their contention that the 911 Commission was deeply flawed and its report failed to address why 911 occurred. A number of the Commission members had major conflicts of interest. The Executive Staff Director Phillip Zelikow is a long-time Republican activist with close ties to Condoleezza Rice and the right-wing funded Miller Institute. The Commission was also criticized for focusing more on increased authorities for intelligence and law enforcement and intelligence restructuring than on the events of 911 and past U.S. policy in the Middle East and South Asia that led up to the 911 attacks. Let me say right from the get go that I'm not a conspiracy theorist by nature. As a journalist I like to see the facts line up solidly before I go with an accusation. At the same time, I also subscribe to Noam Chomsky's approach of looking at how the media and government deal with similar situations and issues when they involve the right and the left. And on that basis, I have to marvel at how the corporate media, and the various government and quasi-government bodies that investigated or are investigating 9-11, have ignored curious things involving the Bush family. The one that has me in shock right now is the information dug up and actually published (In the Prince George's Journal of Prince George, MD, and in Common Dreams) way back on Feb. 4, 2003, reporting that George Bush's obscure youngest brother Marvin (did you know he had a younger brother named Marvin?), was on the board of directors of a company called Securacom (now changed to Stratesec) that was responsible for providing "electronic security" to the World Trade Center right up to 9/11/2001. On July 22, 2005, Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) will host a full-day briefing, co-sponsored by Rep. Ra?l Grijalva (D-AZ), and other sponsors, for Members of Congress and their staffs in the Caucus Room, Cannon House Office Building, Room 345, Independence Ave. & First Street SE, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. One year after the release of the 9/11 Commission Final Report many questions about what transpired on September 11, 2001 and who should be held accountable still remain unanswered. Serious flaws and omissions in the Report have been addressed by whistleblowers and academics. Well known researchers and authors have put the events of that day into historical perspective, and have suggested possible alternatives to the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission regarding intelligence reform, domestic and foreign policy. The hard evidence has yet to be properly evaluated, and points to the need for full transparency, release of information, and continued probative investigations to have an effective, democratic response to the crisis that confronts all of us. The article Why Did the Trade Center Skyscrapers Collapse? published on the libertarian-oriented website LewRockwell.com, has garnered considerable attention. It makes the case for the controlled demolition of the Twin Towers and Building 7 with much the same eloquence as David Ray Griffin, whom it cites. Its author, Morgan Reynolds, brings unprecedented credentials to the community of skeptics of the official story: He is professor emeritus at Texas A&M University, former director of the Criminal Justice Center at the National Center for Policy Analysis, and former chief economist for the US Labor Department during 2001-2002. Reynolds provides an excellent summary of evidence for the controlled demolition of the WTC skyscrapers. However, he also devotes about a third of his article to supporting the dubious idea that neither the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, nor the field in Shanksville, PA were the sites of the crashes of the jetliners commandeered on 9/11/01. His article thus weds the thesis of controlled demolition of the skyscrapers with the denial that Flights 11, 175, 77, and 93 crashed where reported. This is unfortunate because it functions to discredit the case for demolition by associating it with ideas that lack scientific merit, are easily debunked, and are inherently offensive to the victims of the attack -- especially the survivors of the passengers and crews of the crashed flights. The Northern California 9-11 Truth Alliance launched an art contest asking artists to cast light on how 9-11 truth could lead us towards peace and justice. Entires examine issues that the 9-11 Commission has ignored- including- "Who benefited?" and "Who should be held accountable?" Artists and musicians cast new light on the shadow of 9/11, the unconscious fears of society, the defining event of the century, the excuse for endless war, the theme of an art contest that asks how the truth of 9/11 could lead society towards peace and justice. The artists, unlike the official Kean/Zelikow Commission, which found no one responsible for the unprecedented failure of the military to protect American civilians on 9/11, points at those who benefited from 9/11 and could be held accountable for the crime. I've been trying to drop a few hints about the 911 truth movement to my Mom now for quite a while. I called her this morning and told her to turn on C-Span2 to see author David ray Griffin talk about his new book "The 911 Commission: Omissions and Distortions". Quite frankly, she thought my "conspiracy theories" were a load of BS until she saw this amazingly clear and concise analysis. I called her back later and asked what she thought about it all. "It's wild" was all she could say at first. I pressed her a bit and she simply admitted "I'M STUNNED'. Let me tell you, it's damned hard to stun my Mom about anything. She's a hard-headed Taurean whose feet are planted firmly on Mother Earth. If my Mom, middle class, a straight citizen in her 70's is stunned about all this, there may actually be some light at the end of this murky tunnel. 'Johny Revolution' comments: I lucked in to catching this unambiguous account of what happened on 9-11 and got my 70 year old Swedish mom to listen in. She too was blown away by Mr. Griffins lecture. It was rather sad to see the reaction on my mothers face when she realized that the government she has faithfully supported for 50 years was capable of such heinous treachery. Myself, being a forest activist for many years, I have never doubted that the Bush corporate elitists and their co-conspirators in the Pentagon were guilty of not only allowing 9-11 to happen, but of actually orchestrating the entire thing. Eisenhower warned, in his last days, of the dangers of the military industrial complex and how if they became too influential and entrenched in our economy that dire consequences would take place. "President Cheney" new that in order for the neo-cons to get away with 9-11, they would have to secure the confidence of not only the pentagon, but also the mainstream press. I attended a lecture tonight at the UW-Madison campus by Christian theologian David Ray Griffin. This is the author of "The New Pearl Harbor — Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11". His most recent book is "The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions". The title speaks for itself.
The lecture this evening was reported to be the first of its kind — the first time a formal lecture has challenged the official 9/11 story. In addition, it was being recorded for broadcast on C-SPAN! The lecture was entitled "9/11 and the American Empire: How Should Religious People Respond?" He started off with some definitions of "religious people" (apparently Christianity isn't the only religion), and "American Empire" — the conservatives would have you believe America is the world's first "benign" empire, but I think the point is pretty debatable. Then he gets into the heart of the lecture with a discussion of 9/11.
With a short lead time, activists managed to pull off a very successful series of premieres, despite the non-participation of the mainstream press. Public support for 9-11 Truth continues to grow, and the movement attracts some major new allies and opposition. The premieres were benefits organized by the Northern California 9-11 Truth Alliance and Project Censored in less than a month; The Grand Lake Theater was donated by its generous owner, Allen Michaan... The first night at the Guild Theater in Menlo Park, the theater was packed and they had to turn away 75 people. Fortunately, we were able to offer the DVD to the people who couldn't get into the theater, and suggest that they attend the other showings. On February 16th Congressional leadership and two of the planners of the 9/11 attacks blocked, stalled and almost got away with ducking the central question about 9/11. Though they were not forced to answer McKinney's question, their reaction belongs to all of us. We know. They know we know. Don't hold your breath that Rumsfeld and Myers will ever be compelled to answer it, but also don't ever forget the heroism coming from the last bright light on Capitol Hill.
The University of Oregon has canceled an appearance by University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill, who has come under a McCarthyist-style attack from the right wing for an essay about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The Hearst-owned Popular Mechanics magazine takes aim at the 9/11 Truth Movement with a cover story in its March 2005 edition. Sandwiched between ads and features for monster trucks, Nascar paraphenelia, and off-road racing are twelve dense and brilliantly designed pages purporting to debunk the myths of 9/11.
Was driving along Belmont and happened to notice a billboard around 28th or so. What a great opportunity to try out my fancy new cellphone with photo capability! Obviously this message is more important than the usual billboard garbage from the fascists at Clear Channel. I figure this billboard improvement is likely true. I was surprised to learn that 50% of NYC residents believe that Bush and Crew consciously allowed 911 to happen for their own dark purposes. When some monopolistic dictatorial company like Clear Channel has managed to swindle control of all the billboard space in Portland, then it is inevitable that people will fight back against their dominating control. On all sides of the political spectrum, limits exist. On the respectable (sic) Right, for example, it's fine to rant and rave about the sanctity of "unborn lives" but not acceptable to post pictures of abortion doctors on your website. The Left, contrary to popular belief, has limits of respectability (sic), too. For example, leftists can get hot and bothered over Bush not reacting to pre-9/11 warnings. However, those who go further and implicate the U.S. government in any way, shape, or form...well, they are banished to realm of "conspiracy theory."
"The seeming paranoia of conspiracy theorists is not necessarily the result of some underlying mental dysfunction or of stupidity," declares Jonathan Vankin, author of "Conspiracies, Cover-Ups, and Crimes." "The dysfunction is with American society, maybe even civilization as a whole. The structure of civilization itself requires mass adherence to faith in the institutions that built civilization and make it run. Conspiracies theorists question those authorities and, because they do, they skirt the fringes of society." Actively skirting the fringes of society is Sander Hicks, founder of Soft Skull Press and now Vox Pop/Drench Kiss. Hicks gained national notoriety when he published Jim Hatfield's controversial Dubya biography, "Fortunate Son." The scathing, well-documented expose of the Bush dynasty resulted in near financial ruin for Soft Skull, a brilliant film documentary, and Hatfield's tragic suicide. Through it all, Hicks remained focused and ever-searching.
The following letter was sent today by Kevin Ryan of Underwriters Laboratories to Frank Gayle of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Underwriters Laboratories is the company that certified the steel componets used in the constuction of the World Trade Center towers. The information in this letter is of great importance. Griffin treats 911 as if it were an isolated item from the remote historical past. He even refers to himself and some of his sources as "revisionists," as if they were academics rewriting a long established historical text.
When the 911 Team contrives the next national security event, 911 will indeed become academic. When the "homeland" goes code red, this period of vocalized dissent may prove, historically, to be just a momentary luxury. This looks like a three-phase coup. Phase one: the 2000 election, phase two: 911, phase three: coming right up? The Team may be engineering a code-red election crisis as I write. September 11th is just one climax in an ugly process that is ongoing.

Ruppert through his newsletter "From the Wilderness" has been writing for the last six years on the topics of drug trafficking (including government and corporate involvement), world oil supply and energy usage, and military operations that support "the Empire." From the Wilderness has been one of the foremost outlets on the World Trade Center/9-11 reporting. One of the most significant points in Ruppert's book "Crossing the Rubicon" is that he names Vice President Richard Cheney as the central planner of the attacks of September 11, 2001. It is fascinating that The Nation got a genuine admitted CIA agent to write this hatchet job - Baer's review of "New Pearl Harbor" in the September 27the, 2004 issue that supports Cheney's innocence by ignoring the evidentiary record. The Nation has clearly allied itself with the CIA by publishing this article, and has announced in no uncertain terms that it is not interested in journalism on this subject that attempts to examine factual evidence. This is far different that merely ignoring the issue (which much of the Left has chosen to do).
As more documents concerning 9-11 surfaces, it is becoming increasing clear the top officials in the Bush administration were at least complicit if not an active participants in the attacks. There is enough evidence now to bind George W. Bush, big oil companies and 9-11 into a trinity of evil. By allowing the 9-11 attacks to take place unhindered Bush and all of his top advisers are guilty of the mass murder of over 3000 innocent people.
The official claims of what happened on 9-11 do not account for the events that transpired on 9-11 and raise more questions than they answer. One event of 9-11 is absolutely clear, the White House ordered the air force to stand down. As evident from the plane crash that killed golfer Payne Stewart. As soon as his plane deviated from its flight path and failed to follow instructions from the control tower the FAA notified NORAD. Within less than 20 minutes fighter planes were alongside Stewart's plane. In 2001 before 9-11, NORAD ordered fighter planes to intercept errant aircraft over 60 times. The FAA rules were clear whenever contact with a plane was lost or a plane failed to follow instructions from the control tower to correct its course, NORAD was to be notified. This regulation was explicitly clear as the regulation contained the clause "whenever in doubt call NORAD." The Bush administration's claim that no fighters were available is simply laughable. The credibility of the Bush Administration has plunged, as new euphemisms for lying are tested by the mainstream press to explain their failure to describe reality in a timely fashion. Cheney believes what Napoleon once articulated, "You don't have to suppress the truth forever, just until it doesn't matter anymore." 9-11 is the defining crime of the century, a crime used as a pretext for imperial wars, the gutting of the Constitution, the attack on the Bill of Rights, to kickstart a "Shadow Government," and that is being used now to rush through sweeping legislation designed to expand "the National Security State,"( the CIA established in 1947) into a "Global Security State." The official narrative of what happened on September 11th, 2001 has been reinforced and rarely questioned by the media. Those who weren't surprised, shocked, terrified, traumatized, by the events that day, however, found the official narrative difficult to believe, and a 9-11 truth movement was born, dispersed in the seeds of questions, in skeptical minds scattered across the planet. Some had even predicted or warned that the attacks would occur, and were certain that the events were "an inside job," "a false flag operation," designed to gain public support for an attack by the world's richest country upon the world's poorest country, Afghanistan, for geopolitical reasons, including control over the flow of oil and drugs. The Project for a New American Century stated their desire for imperial world hegemony and said, "The process of transformation is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event -- like a new Pearl Harbor."
