The United States currently incarcerates the largest percentage of our population of any country on earth. Since the enactment of the 1994 Crime Bill, the number of incarcerated citizens has increased dramatically. Now that fact alone should give us a sense of security that the system is working. However, if we look deeper the facts are very disturbing. We need to take a look at incarceration costs, violence, recidivism, targeted societal segments, and crime in general to get a comprehensive view. Candy will give you that information and more on her site - "Prison Issues" - prison reform in Washington.

Federal CURE Inc. - This group's mission is to advocate on behalf of the federal inmate population. Reducing crime in our communities requires society's involvement so the federal criminal justice system can:

  1. Address escalating crime rates through the adoption of alternative sentencing
  2. Facilitate transitional services during reintegration into the community
  3. Reintroduce rehabilitative programming which engenders positive changes in the lives of the people it incarcerates.
