Why New York City for Republican Convention?
Why is the Republican National Convention being held in New York City? Which political Einstein decided that this was a good idea? Why not Dallas, Texas . . . Miami, Florida . . . St. Louis, Missouri . . . Atlanta, Georgia? Why hold a convention in a city that has already been a target, has existed under an elevated state of alert since 9/11, is disturbingly close to Washington, DC and the financial centers which are supposed to be targets . . . and whose resources have already been stretched to the limit by terrorism expenditures and twin tower cleanup?

Bush will almost certainly not carry New York State and the largest anti-war demonstrations in the country have materialized on the streets of New York; if history is any indicator, the convention will provoke enormous demonstrations requiring even more security. Is the goal to bankrupt New York - morally and fiscally?

If I were a New Yorker, I would be furious . . . and broke.

slashdot: FCC Rules VoIP Must Be Tappable
"The FCC has unanimously approved the U.S. Justice Department's bid to expand CALEA to broadband and VoIP networks, according to reports from SecurityFocus and News.com. This means, following a mandatory public comment period, service providers will have to wire their networks for easy law enforcement surveillance, the way phone companies do now. The feds have wanted this for a long time." Ebon Praetor adds a link to Reuters' version, writing "In addition, the FCC has decided that the push-to-talk, or walkie-talkie, functions available on phones from Nextel should also be subject to the same tapping regulations that regular phones are."

Come to New York City for the month of August to run with the RC YB ,NYC

We are at a moment in history where Bush & Kerry and the whole ruling class are looking for a mandate--looking for an approving thumbs-up, or at least a complicit silence from people in this country for their whole war-of-empire horrors and homeland repression. They want to go forward--with whoever wins--and say, "This was the will of the people." But MILLIONS are fed-up with this program and do not want to go along with it.

AIDS Activist adds another voice to the SHAC Campaign
Peter Tatchell is a leading gay and human rights campaigner (in England). Peter Tatchell says that animal experiments have undermined HIV research and hindered new treatments. Here is an article he wrote for SHAC:

The development of life-saving protease inhibitor treatments for HIV was delayed for four years by the pharmaceutical company Merck, after the first trials of protease drugs killed laboratory dogs and rats. During those four years, tens of thousands of people with AIDS died, perhaps needlessly. Many might have benefited from the new drugs, including my dear friend, the filmmaker Derek Jarman. He and many others could now be alive if Merck had not submitted its protease research programme to the "Russian roulette" of animal testing. Trinity County's decision reflects a growing movement across America to defend local agriculture, biodiversity and human health. Four other California counties will vote in December to ban genetically engineered crops in their county, while dozens of counties across the country are advancing "GE Free" Zones.

Senator Dayton (Dem.,MN): NORAD and FAA Lied About 9/11 standdown and failures
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sen. Mark Dayton, D-Minn., charged Friday that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) have covered up "catastrophic failures" that left the nation vulnerable during the Sept. 11 hijackings.--- During the hearing, Dayton told leaders of the Sept. 11 commission, that, based on the commission's report, a NORAD chronology made public a week after the attacks was grossly misleading. --- He told Kean and Hamilton that if the commission's report is correct, President Bush "should fire whoever at FAA, at NORAD ... betrayed their public trust by not telling us the truth." --- And, he said, a squadron of NORAD fighter planes that was scrambled was sent east over the Atlantic Ocean and was 150 miles from Washington, D.C., when the third plane struck the Pentagon -- "farther than they were before they took off." --- "For almost three years now, NORAD officials and FAA officials have been able to hide their critical failures that left this country defenseless during two of the worst hours in our history," Dayton declared during a Senate Governmental Affairs Committee hearing...

Always partial to monopolies, the Democrats think they should hold the exclusive concession on any electoral challenge to Bush and the Republicans. Ross Perot and his Reform Party actually cost George Bush Sr. his reelection in 1992, yet Perot never drew a tenth of the abuse for his presumption that Nader does now.

The impulse to control the press hardly originated with George W. How They Could Steal the Election This Time
The potential for fraud and error is daunting. About 61 million of the votes in November, more than half the total, will be counted in the computers of one company, the privately held Election Systems and Software (ES&S) of Omaha, Nebraska. Altogether, nearly 100 million votes will be counted in computers provided and programmed by ES&S and three other private corporations: British-owned Sequoia Voting Systems of Oakland, California, whose touch-screen voting equipment was rejected as insecure against fraud by New York City in the 1990s; the Republican-identified company Diebold Election Systems of McKinney, Texas, whose machines malfunctioned this year in a California election; and Hart InterCivic of Austin, one of whose principal investors is Tom Hicks, who helped make George W. Bush a millionaire.

The DNC2RNC March is a 258 Mile Movement from The Boston Common to Madison Square Garden; stopping, rallying, and spreading resistance the entire way. The March left from the Common the day after the DNC ended, on July 30th. At around ten in the morning the march was off. The police escorted and the first day had little tension.
