Dennis Kucinich: Candidate of the Left?
Kucinich is no pacifist. In 1998, under President Clinton, Kucinich voted for the Iraq Liberation Act which called for the U.S. to militarily remove Saddam Hussein from power. He stands for a "strong and efficient military." He argues that the U.S. occupation of Iraq should be replaced by a UN occupation. He argued for the continuation of sanctions on Iraq as an alternative to war, despite the fact that sanctions killed over one million Iraqis, many of them children. Kucinich's pandering to racism and his recent flip-flops over abortion rights and gay rights precipitated by his run for president should raise questions in people's minds about what else he might "change his mind" about if he actually reaches higher office.

CNN had this article about Iraqi troops quitting the new Iraqi Army. My first thought was, is the US training Iraqi soldiers who then will join the resistance and use their new training and experience against the occuping forces? Or am I reading too much into this story and the new Iraqi soldiers are just not satisfied with their vocational decision in this matter? If the US is training their opposition, why? I don't support the war/occupation, but I'm just trying to understand the administration/pentagon's thinking on this. Any ideas?

Bill to Censor American Citizens from Voicing Opposition to U.S. War on Drugs
A little-known provision buried within the omnibus federal spending bill that the U.S. House of Representatives approved yesterday would take away federal grants from local and state transportation authorities that allow citizens to run advertising on buses, trains, or subways in support of reforming our nation's drug laws. If enacted, the provision could effectively silence community groups around the country that are using advertising to educate Americans about medical marijuana and other drug policy reforms. Meanwhile, this same bill gives the White House $145 million in taxpayer money to run anti-marijuana ads next year.

US Spending Surges To Historic Level
Much of the $2.2 trillion that Washington is expected to spend in fiscal year 2004 is for mandatory spending on Social Security and Medicare. But so-called discretionary spending has also increased some 22 percent during the Bush presidency, from $734 billion in 2002 to $873 billion in 2004.
The Concord Coalition, a bipartisan watchdog, calls this the "most irresponsible year ever."
"The Republican party is simply not interested in small government now," says Brian Riedl, a budget analyst at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. "They're worse than the Democrats they replaced."
