The UC8 Reporter: A Personal Account of Police Abuse of Power Against a Free Press
It's hard to know where to start. I'm not used to writing stories about myself. Usually, I am the one sharing news about other people through recordings and words. I cover events and publish reports to Indybay. I often report on street demonstrations, some more rowdy than others. And while I recognize the privilege my skin-tone grants me in our society and that I have not taken the types of risks war reporters do, I know enough from having seen what's happened to other journalists over the years that I am not immune from abuses by law enforcement authorities.

Labor Fights Back at Goose Island (Book Review)
Kari Lydersen's Book Kari Lydersen has penned an absorbing book, "Revolt on Goose Island." It chronicles how 250 members of the UE, a progressive union, occupied a factory, "Republic Windows," located in Chicago, IL, rather then just meekly submit to its closing. It's labor history at its best. This "direct action" came not long after AFL-CIO labor leader Richard L. Trumka denounced the evils of "globalization," and the predatory schemes of the Wall Street boy-ohs.

What is the reason that names I would expect to see in my sender column are matched with a subject line I would expect with the sender below that, and the content is entirely different from those two, including senders and content I have never dealt with before and would have spammed? What happened to the actual messages sent me? What can I do to protect my inbox, my contents, and the people emailing me or intended to receive my emails? Is this related to Yahoo problems in China, Australia, Japan.... and with those who have been visiting sites warning of HAARP use timed with conveniently-timed earthquakes when nuclear materials and military base negotiations were breaking down and military drills that exactly match the same location/time live events? Or meaningless coincidence? This email address was not used for those research investigations, nor for spreading that info. What are wisest options?

The Coming Internet Protection Racket or Rentier Digital Capitalism
Without Common Carrier status, predatory companies like Comcast will inevitably start demanding a take of any profitable new economic activity dependent on the Internet. They will be able to use the threat of arbitrary service disruption to make demands on independent businesses. They will also start offering "tiered" services, where access to various protocols will be dependent on paying for special "elite" or "gold" subscriber status. Running a website will be out of the question without paying an assortment of special fees, split among a consortium of business interests and justified by appealing to precedents like HDTV and "Trusted Platform Computing." There will be legal and antitrust wrangling over the matter, but how effective has that been recently against digital age would-be monopolists? (Think Microsoft.)
