Memorial Day Weekend at the Indy500; greenhouse gas, cars, stars & bars
A race car sponsored by the Indiana National Guard was the first to crash today, 05/23/2009, in the Indianapolis 500, not long after the opening ceremony to honor America's veterans, including a speech by General Craig McKinley, a three-volley salute, and the national anthem sung by a member of Indiana's Guard. The Indiana Guard sponsored two Indy500 race cars, to promote itself, and encourage recruitment, this year. The 1313th Engineer company just deployed to Iraq, after a send-off party at East High School in Columbus, Indiana.

Barack Obama hasn't been to the mountaintop, not in Appalachia
Barack Obama hasn't been to the mountaintop, not in Appalachia. Or, if he has, he wasn't moved, and he doesn't care; his Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved 42 out of 48 permits to blow up Appalachian mountains---mountaintop removal (MTR) coal mining permits.

More than a few environmentalists went into Obama Shock at the news. "United States of Appalachia" author Jeff Biggers responded with "Waterboarding for Appalachia," describing MTR as "the process of blowing up our nation's oldest and most diverse mountains, razing historic communities, poisoning watersheds, and causing massive erosion and flooding."

GM's Turn on Obama's Chopping Block
The alarm bells should be ringing day and night about what's being prepared at General Motors — the ripple effects could produce tidal waves.

The Obama administration has made no secret about its plans for GM: the Chrysler bankruptcy was the "test case," and now Obama's Wall Street buddies inside the Auto Task Force plan to replicate it. The vast implications of the Chrysler bankruptcy went unnoticed by the mainstream media, concerned as it was with the convenient hype provided by Swine Flu.

The real swine, however, are those preparing the greatest single attack on American workers since the Great Depression, the precedent of which will reverberate loudly through business-labor relations in the country — that is, if workers at GM and its parts suppliers don't put a stop to it.

Since President Barack Obama took office in January, the U.S. economy has gone from bad to worst. The U.S. economy and capitalism is in a total mess.

Fish Crow by Audubon The magnificent crow. The large black bird that we see so commonly flying in the skies in the pacific northwest, and perching on the tall trees is our avian brother. And as feeling, living beings, we should have a caring and respectful relationship with them. The department of fish and wildlife, as a publicly funded organization that represents the citizens should make policies based on respect and caring for wild animals. However they are operating in an exploitative manner toward wildlife, a legacy that has been handed down from the 1850s, and should be modernized to an approach that is ecological and compassionate.

Obama's Trail of Broken Promises: Morphing Dick Cheney
A despairing country elected a president who promised change. Americans arrived from every state to witness in bitter cold Obama's swearing in ceremony. The mall was packed in a way that it has never been for any other president.

The people's good will toward Obama and the expectations they had for him were sufficient for Obama to end the gratuitous wars and enact major reforms. But Obama has deserted the people for the interests. He is relying on his non-threatening demeanor and rhetoric to convince the people that change is underway.

The change that we are witnessing is in Obama, not in policies. Obama is morphing into Dick Cheney.

Right-wing rampage by Obama administration
The past week has provided a definitive demonstration of the subservience of the Obama administration and the Democratic Party to the military-intelligence apparatus of American imperialism. Day by day, the White House and the Democratic-controlled Congress delivered decisions along the lines demanded by the Pentagon and CIA, in many instances directly repudiating the campaign promises made to win popular support during the 2008 election.

The Economy's Search for a New Normal
When the reality of the economic crisis first made itself known, many who realized what was happening dubbed it "the greatest crisis since the Great Depression." This description was more than bombast; it was a sober analysis of the immensity of the economic problems in the country — problems that had been building up for years.

The mainstream media is now — for political reasons — in a constant clamor for the economy's elusive "rock bottom." This is so people will be more hopeful, less agitated, and more willing to let those who destroyed the economy continue running the country un-challenged. Every time a new economic indicator comes out that wasn't "as bad as expected," Wall Street cheers and politicians give their "we've turned the corner" speeches. Reality is thus turned on its head.

How New York Fought the Budget Defecit and Won
While nearly every state is facing severe budget deficits, New York State showed how to balance the budget without completely destroying the social safety net. New York took a few progressive steps forward in balancing the budget and painted a more sensible picture of "shared sacrifice" than what the average politician has proposed. Instead of sacrificing social programs and increasing taxes that affect primarily workers, two new tax brackets were created for New York's wealthier citizens, generating 4 billion dollars in state revenue.

Prior to the new budget, New York's highest tax rate was 6.85 percent, for anyone making $20,000 or more. The additional tax brackets are 7.85% and 8.97% for those whose income is more than $300,000 and $500,000. These new rates are temporary and set to expire in 3 years. According to the Times-Union, "In broad strokes, the agreement closes the state's estimated $16.2 billion budget deficit through $6 billion in federal stimulus dollars, $6 billion in cuts to an array of programs, and $4 billion in new revenue through an increase in the personal income tax on affluent New Yorkers." The grassroots movement that pushed this "wealthy tax" forward not only asked that new tax brackets remain permanent but also asked for a third tax bracket on New Yorkers earning $1 million or more annually, which would have raised an additional billion dollars.
