[from npr.org] "Bushwhacked's first chapter is devoted to an examination of Harken Energy Corp., in which Bush became a part owner in 1986. He sold his Harken shares in 1990, just before the stock's value plummeted. Ivins compares the company to Enron, the failed energy giant. Harken was "a perfect replica of Enron in miniature... but with exactly the same patterns of misbehavior for which [Bush] later wound up scolding others," she says."

Senate Votes for a Measure to Thin Trees

Violence is not the issue. I don't think it ever was. Not back in the day when the Weather Underground blew up toilets in the Capitol Building and not today as the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) flips out over SUVs and condominiums. Revolution isn't a leather-jacket tactic radicals adopt - it is a transformation of the whole society made by millions. It can be violent, but it's not about violence. And it's definitely not, as the old saying goes, a dinner party.

"Individualization is both a success- and a suffering-history. Individualization has produced on one side the emancipated individual and on the other the modern lack of orientation.. Whoever wants to be come-of-age must renounce familiar certainties.. For many years, people have agreed that the `new individualism' has led to a dangerous decline in publicv interest/welfare orientation."

serious thinking. We need to think seriously and ask lots of questions in these times.
Santa Clara VTA chose the ADEC System for the bus demonstration program over other retrofit technologies partially due to its low cost and successful implementation on City of Houston diesel vehicles.
"In the end, Vietnam didn't matter. Iraq does."
"The diverse crisis prophets today are treated like those lying shepherds who triggered a false wolf alarm many times and whom no one believed any more when the wolf really came. For a long time, nothing was as taboo and out on the left as the suggestion of any theory of collapse. Capitalism appeared more flexible and resistent than ever." Let's see, 69% of Kellogg Brown & Root's profits came directly from US taxpayers. Nothing like corporate welfare to make one's stomach turn. With $2.7 billion coming from US taxpayers to Halliburton it looks like Cheney's $33 million payoff was a good investment. And hey, there are no losers, except of course the citizens of the US, Iraq, and Afghanistan. But what are their lives worth next to Cheney making a few hundred million more dollars?
By paying civilians to handle military tasks, the Bush administration is freeing up U.S. troops to fight. But the use of contractors also hides the true costs of war.
Their dead aren't added to official body counts. Their duties - and profits - are hidden by close-mouthed executives who won't give details to Congress. And as their coffers and roles swell, companies are funneling earnings into political campaigns and gaining influence over military policy - even getting paid to recommend themselves for lucrative contracts.
CNN's "Fit to Kill"
The study of more than 70 U.S. companies and individual contractors turned up more than $500,000 in donations to the president's 2000 campaign, more than they gave collectively to any other politician over the past dozen years.
Thanks to todays KBOO news we can now be certain that 1984 is now! The currents we smelled in the Reagan/Bush I years are laid out palinly in the current cabal's New American Century policy, but a careful observation reveals more insidious elements. The military industrial complex is supreme and democracy no more.
Corporate media is now coming out with information we already knew.

The "Coleman Republicans," most of whom are running in heavily Jewish districts -- and several of whom are Orthodox or observant -- are not shy about leveraging issues of Jewish concern to further their candidacies, like Israel.
The ideology of liberalism subjectivizes the causes of social problems. The dominant order of the social system is raised to the dogmat of a natural law above all criticism. Everyone is guilty in his/her private unhappiness or failure. Social crises and catastro-
phes can only be caused by subjectively guilty persons, the terrorist, speculator and child molestor. The system itself can never be the culprit.

What I am saying, in short, is that there is a team of arsonists throughout the country that have for some time escaped recognition by most of the media as the major networks, instead spin it into a wildfire debate (Sierra Club included).
N.B.G. = Nothing But Grants.. In a crucial victory for President Bush, House and Senate negotiators agreed today to provide nearly $20 billion in aid to reconstruct Iraq as a direct grant, beating back powerful bipartisan demands that some of the money eventually be repaid.
Senior citizens are "the most selfish group in America today... They have become the new welfare state, and given the size and political clout of this constituency, it's very dangerous" -- Stephen Moore, President of the Club for Growth
"The conservative movement has really built up an infrastructure of not just ideas, but the ability to kind of get out there and do the kind of hard communications work to sell to the American public,"

BushCo stumbles, fumbles, bumbles and of course lies his way through a press conference today. What was particularly funny was that King George coined the term "suiciders" during this press conference. Let's hope this national embarassment - The Oblivious One - does not leak out of the press room to the rest of the world.

For Jeb Bush, the implications of his legislating the "Feeding Tube" may come as a shock -- a backlash from conservatives who have ceaselessly preached freedom and small government. His law has exposed the rent in the Republican Party between the libertarian crowd and the Christian right.
