Ashcroft Mocks, Condemns Librarians and Others Who Oppose USA Patriot Act
Attorney General John Ashcroft today accused the country's biggest library association and other critics of fueling "baseless hysteria" about the government's ability to pry into the public's reading habits . . . "If he's coming after us so specifically, we must be having an impact," said Emily Sheketoff, executive director of the American Library Association's Washington office.
In an unusually pointed attack as part of his latest speech in defense of the Bush administration's counterterrorism initiatives, Mr. Ashcroft mocked and condemned the American Library Association and other Justice Department critics.

California's Oct. 7 Recall Postponed Until Installation of New Voting Machines
A federal appeals court postponed California's Oct. 7 gubernatorial recall election, ruling the historic vote cannot proceed as scheduled because some votes would be cast using outmoded punch-card ballot machines.
In what was the last of about a dozen legal challenges to the attempt to unseat Gov. Gray Davis, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Monday it is unacceptable that six counties would be using outdated punch-card ballots, the type that sparked the "hanging chads" litigation in Florida during the 2000 presidential election.

Due To Lack Of Funds, Students Must Pledge To Televised Flag

Unable to buy enough real flags for the new school year, Central High has taken to showing an image of the American flag on classroom TVs while students make the pledge.
A new state law requires school children to say the pledge at least once a week, and the school simply doesn't have enough flags for that.

Iraq Oil Contract Details Withheld Due To "National Security"
How can anyone take this administration seriously? They're looting the nation and too few people are aware or care. If Cheney's energy notes containing maps of Iraqi oil fields are any indication, eventually this information will be made public and we'll listen to the deafening silence that follows. So what if Cheney's notes had maps of Iraqi oil fields and Halliburton was awarded no-bid contracts worth $7 billion to control and distribute Iraqi oil, the new fall season is on tv.

Dual-Income Middle Class Barely Treads Water
Millions of middle-class families can no longer afford to live on two incomes.
A generation ago, a typical American middle-class family lived on the income of a single breadwinner. In recent years it has taken two working spouses to live the modern middle-class dream. Now, it seems even that is not enough to survive the skyrocketing cost of housing, health care and college while saving for retirement and shouldering growing debt loads.

If there is any doubt that the "War on Terrorism" has anything to do with actual security, and is anything but an attempt by the ruling class to use fear to herd the populace, it can be cleared up by examining the Bush Administration's response to the threat of terrorist attacks against nuclear power plants.

Is "Bowling for Columbine" Fiction?
David T. Hardy says, "Bowling is fiction. It makes its points by deceiving and by misleading the viewer. Statements are made which are false. Moore leads the reader to draw inferences which he must have known were wrong. Indeed, even speeches shown on screen are heavily edited, so that sentences are assembled in the speaker's voice, but which were not sentences he uttered. Bowling uses deception as its primary tool of persuasion and effect."

Troops Dig Into Own Pockets To Pay For Gear
Patrick Garrett, a defense analyst with GlobalSecurity.org says, "the Army ran out of desert camo boots, and a lot of soldiers were being issued regular black combat boots. Soldiers decided that wasn't for them, so they paid for new boots with their own money."
According to the Pentagon's "Operation Iraqi Freedom Lessons Learned" draft report, soldiers spent their own money to get better field radios, extra ammunition carriers to help them fight better and commercial backpacks because their own rucksacks were too small.

U.S. Housing Unaffordable to Most Low-Income Workers
With the rise in housing costs outpacing that of wages, there is no state where a low-income worker can reasonably afford a modest one- or two-bedroom rental unit, according to a study issued today by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, an advocacy group based in Washington. The study, "Out of Reach 2003," compared wages in each state, large metropolitan area and county in the nation against fair market rents as determined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. In 40 states, the study found, renters need to earn more than two times the prevailing minimum wage to afford basic housing. In the most expensive states — Massachusetts, California, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Connecticut — they must earn more than three times the minimum wage.
