Cities are the location of economical constraints and repressive policies all over the world. But at the same time they are contested areas characterised by the fight for self-determination and participation. Presently, we are experiencing crises, social protests and new movements. In order to multiply these conflict lines on the city's terrain, a day of action against capitalist urban development and gentrification is going to take place. The action day is to create an event which has its place wherever you are fighting and living and relating to squatted projects like Rote Flora in solidarity.

In A protest against political repression and a show of working-class muscle, thousands will take the streets of Oakland, Calif., November 2 to answer the call for a general strike by Occupy Oakland.

I ran across two posts recently, one about the Los Angeles General Assembly and one from Z-mag, after Michael Albert toured Europe. And, from word of mouth, I hear that Occupy Seattle has developed a working GA. Hopefully, this form of so-called democratic participation can be analyzed and restructured in a way that will become more productive.

Walking through the camp of Occupy Portland, it is hard to believe it has only been a few days since it began. The transformation of the space is nothing short of miraculous: from a few scattered tents, some cardboard signs, and a tarp or two, a miniature city has arisen, crafted with the energy, creativity, and good intentions of us all. Together, we are learning first-hand the difficulties, frustrations, and joys of democracy and of the experience of power.
Since the beginning of the financial crisis, governments from Berlin to Washington solemnly vowed to regulate the financial system more strongly, close the casino on the financial markets and call to account financially the unrestrained speculators for their inflicted damage. Good roaring, lions - but no deeds followed the words.
