George Duffy via Fredric L. Rice 22.08.2010 21:14
George Duffy's Farewell to the Wilderness
George Duffy was a wilderness hero, a U. S. Forest Service employee and tireless advocate for the environment and for the wilderness who worked (and at times bled green) within the system for the safety of the Angeles National Forest that he was charged with protecting. With his retirement and now his death it is sad to see a staunch advocate of what is wild fall by the wayside.

Farewell, George, your friends, family, and the forest creatures who knew you will miss you.

Nicaragua & ALBANISA: The Privatization of Venezuelan Aid
Aside from the fact that ALBANISA enjoys immunity from budget oversight, the company has garnered notoriety due to suspicions of illegitimate activities. The most prominent complaint concerns ALBANISA ownership. Jose Francisco Lopez Centeno, then president of PETRONIC, managed the company's affairs as its vice president until late 2009. While his simultaneous management of the two companies offered no immediate cause for alarm, his time as Secretary General for the ruling FSLN party did.4 Many observers accused the company of being subservient to the interests of the party and, by extension, the Ortega administration.

The country is the star in a disarmament campaign capitalizing on the 60-year-long absence of a military. And the campaign has a promotional dimension, too, as up to 14 million persons are invited to become virtual citizens

The goals of the campaign are elimination of nuclear weapons, world disarmament and a reduction of 10 percent in the military budget by countries of the world.

Crisis as Permanent State
The Federal Reserve has pumped far more than a trillion dollars without stimulating the economy. A self-sustaining upswing, increasing production, services, export and consumption is not in sight. 250,000 jobs must be created month after month for five years to reach the 4.7% unemployment before the crisis. 125,000 persons stream on the labor market every month.

A Financial Boom Despite the Crisis
For the banks, deficit state budgets become important clients. They compensate the private demand for credit. The financial boom is completely based on the support measures of state organs. An economic upswing is not in sight. The deregulation of the Clinton years should be canceled and investment banks strictly separated from credit banks.

This is a pattern we've seen before. The US offers Arab states expensive modern armaments, and then turns around to Israel and tells it it needs to have even better weapons to stay ahead in the race. Then the pressure again mounts on the Arab states. It's a racket that has been a bonanza for US arms manufacturers.

Under Obama, Wall Street made a 47% increase in profits from 2009 to 2010. Yet, the 99ers and other job seekers continue to try to deal with losing apartments and homes, selling off cars, trying to sell blood plasma and possessions, while applying for jobs that don't exist. Thor Halvorssen, descendant of Simon Bolivar 04.08.2010 13:29
Chavez, the would be Dictator, and his Bolivarian Critics
"Thor Halvorssen, president of the Washington- based Human Rights Foundation, is one of those who expects the worst from Chávez. Despite the Nordic name, he has close ties to Venezuelans and is a Bolívar descendent. Halvorssen wrote another critique of the Venezuelan economic system that appeared Monday in The Huffington Post." ... The finances of the Fuerzas Armadas is based primarily on drug smuggling and protecting local cartel operations. This may have been one reason that the Cuban news service Prensa Latina issued a distorted report when the Costa Rican legislature gave routine approval for U.S ships on drug patrol to dock at local ports, mostly for shore leave.

The approval listed all the 46 U.S. ships that have even the remotest chance of visiting Costa Rica, so Prensa Latina suggested a U.S. invasion or base here. That false claim found quick acceptance in leftist publications and online outlets in the United States. Expats in Costa Rica have yet to see any of the 7,000 U.S. Marines that Prensa Latina promised. But leftists in the legislature have appealed the approval to the Sala IV constitutional court.

Some see the shrilled response by Chávez and his allies to the expulsion of José Manuel Zelaya from Honduras June 28, 2009, as related partly to the drug trade. Honduras had become wide open to key illegal sea and air transport routes. (1)

He could have announced a panel to hear the heartfelt dissent of U.S. soldiers, who know this war from the ground. He could have apologized to the Afghani people.
