Viva Palestina Stopped at the "Peace" Bridge
July 13, 2009

On July 4, a delegation of solidarity activists set out from the U.S. to deliver desperately needed humanitarian supplies to the Palestinians of Gaza. The convoy was organized by group Viva Palestina, led by British member of parliament and antiwar activist George Galloway, who was part of a similar effort from London earlier this year.

The delegation arrived in Egypt and began assembling vehicles and supplies. But its progress has been hampered by Egyptian authorities, who stopped several buses filled with Viva Palestina members from crossing into the Sinai on the way toward the Rafah border crossing into Gaza. Organizers said they wanted to continue their journey on Monday with the cooperation of the Egyptian government.

Several SocialistWorker.org contributors are part of the Viva Palestina delegation and will be contributing to this journal. This entry was written by Karen Burke and Brian Lenzo.

Obama, Ghana, and African oil
Map of West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea. Barack Obama's visit to Ghana is, most fundamentally, about West African oil and natural gas, and control of the corridors for transporting it through the Gulf of Guinea, on the West African Coast. Nigeria, the greatest source of African oil for export, is at the center of the African oil producing states bordering the Gulf, and the Niger River is the corridor for transporting Nigerian oil and gas, and now, oil and gas from landlocked Niger, as well.

The Coup in Honduras: A Teachable Moment for Obama?
Chief Judge John Marshall President Barack Obama's main duty under the U.S. Constitution is to see to it that the laws are "faithfully executed." By a UN Treaty, approved by the Senate, in 1994, torture is against U.S. law. No ifs, ands or buts about it. No exceptions! In Honduras, some apologists for the "de facto" regime, are pretending that they followed the law, when they gave their president the boot. Will Obama play the same "pretend game" on Torture? Stay Tuned.

Compromising Democracy in Honduras
Can a solution to the crisis in Honduras — itself the result of a military coup — be "mediated," where on one side sit coup leaders and on the other a democratically elected but ousted President? Does any "middle ground" exist? Of course not. If President Zelaya unconditionally returns to finish his term in office, democracy will be restored; anything short of that will have democracy "compromised" into its opposite.

Obama is the behind-the-scenes organizer of this negotiated farce, even though he has no legal or moral right to undermine the democratic process in Honduras. His Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, brought the parties together and chose an "objective" mediator, Costa Rican President Oscar Arias — someone who has obviously aligned himself with the United States.

Anarchism, insurrections and insurrectionalism
Insurrections - the armed rising of the people - has always been close to the heart of anarchism. The first programmatic documents of the anarchist movement were created by Bakunin and a group of European left-republican insurrectionists as they made the transition to anarchism in Italy in the 1860's. This was not a break with insurrectionism but with left-republicanism, shortly afterwards Bakunin was to take part in an insurrection in Lyon in 1870.

The Coup in Honduras
On July 28, troops in Honduras ousted President Manuel Zelaya and flew him out of the country. Praised by the traditional left for his economic policies and social reforms, Zelaya's alliance with Hugo Chavez and growing relationship with the ALBA countries were sharply rebuked by the more conservative sectors which also disapproved of his periodic attacks on the United States. From Costa Rica, Zelaya declared: "This was a plot by a very voracious elite, which wants to keep this country in an extreme level of poverty!". However, it seems improbable that the Honduran elite would have toppled the democratically-elected president without Washington's prior consent and support, despite assurances to the contrary.
