Despite U.S. insistence on publicly focusing the scope of Iraq's guerrilla movement on Saddam Hussein loyalists and foreign militants, organized Iraqi civilians also participate in the violent resistance to the U.S.-led occupation
The shattered eyes of Palestine are staring at us. They are craving for unity, for justice, for truth, for humanity. Those are the eyes of generations of children who have been deprived of the happiness of their age.
A summary of Frontline's video discussing the decade long march of the United States towards war with Iraq.
Vice President Dick Cheney in a recent speech to the Heritage Foundation: "We could not accept the grave danger of Saddam Hussein and his terrorist allies turning weapons of mass destruction against us or our friends and allies."
Of course, no such grave danger existed. Having failed to find any WMD, we know that now. More importantly, we knew it in the fall of 2002, when this push for war began. Even back then, the CIA was using terms such as "unlikely" and "low probability" to describe the odds of Saddam handing WMD to terrorists.
Leaders of the "Coalition for a Realistic Foreign Policy" charged that the Bush administration is moving "in a dangerous direction toward empire", an idea that they said has never been embraced by the US public.
The coalition's purpose appears to be, above all, to publicly take on those who support the administration's imperial policies, beginning with its National Security Strategy.
Glaciers in Argentina and Chile are melting at double the rate of 1975 because of global warming scientists said yesterday, after calculating that the ice lost between 1995 and 2000 was equivalent to a rise in sea level of about 0.105mm a year.
Scientists combined space observation and survey data of the 63 largest Patagonian ice fields. Comparing ice loss rates from 1968-1975 and 1975-2000 they found it had more than doubled.
Bolivian Vice-President Carlos Mesa was sworn as president late Friday, hours after his predecessor was forced out by weeks of bloody street protests set off by a plan to export natural gas to the United States.
LA PAZ, Bolivia (Reuters) - President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada has resigned in a letter to Congress, a senior government source has said, after a month-long revolt by Bolivia's Indian majority in which more than 70 people died.
An Indian man, who claims to have survived only on liquids and sunlight for eight years, has been invited by NASA to show them how he does it.
His wife says: "Every evening he looks at the sun for one hour without batting an eyelid. It is his main food. Occasionally he takes coffee, tea or some other liquid."
Seems our friends in the UK put us to shame when it comes to trashing The Oblivious One. Way to go Brits!
A new anti-gang law has generated fear, not security, among the majority of people in El Salvador. The measure, says President Francisco Flores, was necessary to combat the growing scourge of gang violence. But opposition leaders allege that its true purpose is to crack down on organizing and stifle dissent.

ChevronTexaco and ConocoPhillips both imported Iraqi crude to California in August, according to a filing Tuesday by the Energy Information Administration, the statistical arm of the U.S. Department of Energy. The shipments mark the first time that Iraqi oil has reached California shores since the United States launched its invasion to unseat Saddam Hussein in March. It also represents a big step toward normalcy for California drivers. Before the war, Iraq had been California's biggest source of foreign oil. It accounted for 20.1 percent of all the state's imports in 2002, or 6.09 percent of total supplies.
Ratcheting up his criticism of the war in Iraq, Senator Edward M. Kennedy accuses the Bush administration of telling "lie after lie after lie" to defend its policy in a fiery speech prepared for delivery today on the Senate floor.
"The trumped up reasons for going to war have collapsed," Kennedy says in a speech that underscores his opposition to President Bush's request for $87 billion to fund military operations and rebuilding in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters he was personally worried that when he and other top officers visited troops, they were only allowed to talk to "all the happy folks." "I want to see the folks that have complaints. And sometimes they won't let them near me," Myers said when pressed about the Stars and Stripes newspaper survey in which half of 1,939 troops responding said morale in their unit was low or very low and that they did not plan to reenlist in the military.
Rep. George Nethercutt, went home to Washington state and complained the U.S. press was missing the real story.
"The story of what we've done in the postwar period is remarkable," he said. "It is a better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day."

Bush can be stopped, a "Letter to the Left" [
http://www.petitiononline.com/LttrLeft/petition.html] tells me. It's signed by Leslie Cagan, Noam Chomsky, and Pete Seeger, among others... [B]ut so what? Beating Bush isn't the same as beating the drive, through military force or otherwise, to dominate the world. That exists independent of Bush, or whoever else occupies the White House. And if you think anyone, even slightly to the left of Bush, has to be better, take a long, hard look at Tony Blair. Or consider Clinton's record, free from the distorting mythology that Clinton respected international law, engaged every ally, and never by-passed the UN. It's not Bush that has to be beaten; it's a drive to dominate the world that has to beaten, which means beating something much more fundamental than Bush.
Mahathir Mohamad called on Muslims to emulate the Jewish response to oppression, saying the Jews had "survived 2000 years of pogroms not by hitting back, but by thinking".

A Third World country with the United States' recent numbers -- its huge budget and trade deficits, its growing reliance on short-term borrowing from the rest of the world -- would definitely be on the currency crisis watch list.
What will that plunge look like? It will certainly involve a sharp fall in the dollar and a sharp rise in interest rates. In the worst-case scenario, the government's access to borrowing will be cut off, creating a cash crisis that throws the nation into chaos.
