I went to see Star Wars when I was in high school, which seems about the right time to see it. I liked it a lot. I wasn't one of those people who saw it a hundred times or anything. I wasn't that much of a nerd. Besides, I was too busy playing Dungeons and Dragons. I saw it again recently. It's not so good as I remember. In fact it's pretty bad. The characters are flat, the dialog hokey, the acting nondescript. But I still loved the ending, where Luke remembers to "use the force" to blow up the Death Star.

With a Democratic majority set to take over Congress in January, the White House has put forth a brazen request that amounts to a heist of the federal treasury. It is having the Pentagon ask for a staggering $160 billion to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for 2007. The huge request is more than last year's military spending by Russia, China, India, North Korea and Iran combined.

Portland-based peace activist Nikki Thanos will appear in court tomorrow November 15, 2006 at 9:00 am at the Multnomah Justice Center, 1120 SW 3rd Street in Portland. She is facing charges of Criminal Mischief for an Oct. 31 act of civil disobedience at the Mexican Consulate. Thanos was protesting the Mexican government's complicity in nine murders of Oaxacan social movement leaders. It is an open hearing and supporters are most welcome.

The Sandinista revolution, upon coming to power in 1979, confiscated the land that had been held by the Somoza family and some of his closet cronies and redistributed it to the poor that worked it partly through establishing collectively run state farms. The Sandinistas also made literacy and healthcare a priority. Easily treated diseases that Somoza let kill and maim, such as polio, were vaccinated against and eliminated. Teaching everyone to read and write became a priority in the country where Somoza once declared he wanted "... uneducated people, little more than beasts of burden."
Bono of U2 is a major investor and managing director of the Elevation Partners investment firm, a company named after a famous U2 song. This company invested $300 million in Pandemic Studios, a company that is producing a videogame entitled "Mercenaries 2: World in Flames", a reality-based game that depicts the invasion and destruction of Venezuela, and promotes the assassination of the democratically elected president of Venezuela, the office currently held by President Hugo Chavez. It is clearly a piece of well-crafted propaganda. Bono is trying to skirt responsibility for this. The citation below cites a New York Times article in which Bono says his critics are "barking mad".

CNN editors replaced all Palestinian quotations with quotes from the US and Israel in its story 'U.S. vetoes U.N. condemnation of Israel's Gaza strikes'. The new, more prominent article begins with the exact same wording as the original, but all Palestinian remarks are gone.
How do they manage to pull off these things again and again and conference attendees just sit there nodding? Frightening and humorous (as in the joke's on the participants)at the same time...
The resources to reverse the environmental damage ravishing the planet and threatening life of earth as we know it, are there. It is the social system that prevents these resources beign applied.
Capitalism cannot prevent environmental catastrophe. That is why replacing it with an integrated world plan of production based on the democratic collective ownership and control and management of the world's resources for and by the working class is our most pressing task.
