"Consumers ultimately copy the advertising, competition and achievement society produced by politics and the media in their daily reality and see no possibilities any more for exodus from this money- and success pressure. Climate Change Endangers Growth of World Economy
"The solar architecht Rolf Disch in Freiburg sold the first solar-energy-plus houses that produce more energy with the help of the sun than is consumed in these energy houses. Every homeowner becomes an energy-seller. Economy and ecology harmonize at last.. Money is earned with the solar roof. The sun doesn't send any bill. The solution to the energy- and climate problem is in the skies." Transl from German

There have been other reports suggestive of a connection between child abuse and top officials. The paper reported, ``A homosexual prostitution ring is under investigation by federal and District authorities and includes among its clients key officials of the Reagan and Bush administrations, military officers, congressional aides and U.S. and foreign businessmen with close ties to Washington's political elite.''

Updates From Brazil's Landless Workers Movement
Reforms sought by the people of Brazil include a move toward sustainable organic non-GMO agriculture methods, as well as taking over farms that don't serve social needs, in essence to completely transform the agrarian land base to meet the needs of those in the country, in terms of food production and economic sustainability, as well as in the areas of eradicating illiteracy and starting training programs and to stop human rights violations. It is unclear whether these social and agrarian reforms will ever be implemented.

Fighting in "the streets of America " is typical Bush/Cheney fear-mongering hyperbole. It echoes the top down use of the fear factor by the Bushies.

Relax, It Was All a Pack of Lies

Four and half months of futile searching have demonstrated that there were not/are not any "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq. We knew going in that the vast majority had been destroyed in the nineties. It is now clear that State Department intelligence analysts were right in insisting last fall that there was "no reliable evidence" that they were "reconstituted" (to borrow the term favored by Vice President Dick Cheney).

Flash Mobs. I creative protest idea??
Flash Mobs are the latest Internet craze circling the planet. They are examples of smart mobs, a term coined by writer Howard Rheingold, which describes the use of modern technology to quickly mobilize people for spontaneous creative gatherings. At the moment flash mobs are a performance art form, organised through internet and mobile phone technology, allowing ordinary people to participate. It is only a matter of time before flash mobs are utilised effectively as part of a swarm protest strategy, or to counteract incursions on free speech and protest.

Kangaroos killed for sport shoes
Last night in Portland I saw a large truck driving downtown with a short film playing on screens on three sides. The scenes were actual footage of the brutal killings and slaughter process of kangaroos. Many of the films show children (presumably of the hunters) learning this gruesome trade "on the job", participating in tasks such as stomping an infant joey to death and beating other kid kangaroos to death by their feet. These hunters, participating in an unregulated hunting industry, are using these methods to supply the kangaroo leather to the sport shoe industry.

Dispatch From Baghdad
George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz and Condoleezza Rice and Tony Blair and Dick Cheney are insane. I don't know what they think they are doing here, but if it involves order and sanity they have failed miserably and indefinitely. It's obvious enough from the newspaper accounts but you have to see it for yourself. They have caused a catastrophe here. The events of the past year have moved so quickly we tend to forget about the effect of 12 years of economic sanctions. "The price is worth it?" I don't know what they're going to do, and the masters of war themselves must be terrified.

Welcome to Iraq-Nam

Iraqi guerrillas have been killing US troops at the rate of about two a day. Even if the fighting does not escalate any further, at least a thousand more American troops will die in Iraq before the election in November, 2004.
Drop a grenade on a Humvee from an overpass, walk up behind an American soldier in a crowded market and shoot him dead, plant a radio-controlled mine in the road: it's easy in a country awash with weapons, and meanwhile the Americans push the population into your arms with endless heavy-handed raids in search of Saddam Hussein, as if he mattered.
