Tim De Christopher's Peaceful Uprising

From the open publishing newswire: At a time when the debate over climate change is finally gaining post-election traction and hot topics such as fracking and the Keystone XL pipeline have captured public attention, the documentary Bidder 70 is poised to showcase a movement that has steadily gathered force, particularly among millenials, who harbor grave concerns for the increasingly perilous future. The feature-length documentary chronicles how renowned activist Tim DeChristopher's civil disobedience blazed new opportunities for the climate justice movement.
Tim De Cristopher's Peaceful Uprising

On Dec. 19, 2008, University of Utah economics student Tim DeChristopher disrupted a highly disputed Bush administration Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oil and gas lease auction in Salt Lake City. Not content to merely protest outside, DeChristopher entered the auction hall and registered as bidder 70. With no intention of paying for leases starting at $2 per acre, he outbid industry giants on 77 pristine Utah land parcels surrounding American treasures like Canyonlands National Park, and effectively safeguarded from drilling 22,000 acres of land worth $1.7 million, before the auction was halted.

Although incoming Interior Secretary Ken Salazar invalidated the auction two months later, DeChristopher's brave commitment and actions rewarded this remarkably principled young man with two federal felony indictments carrying penalties of up to ten years in prison and $750,000 in fines. Awaiting trial with the threat of prison looming, the 27-year-old environmentalist escalated his activism and evolved into a charismatic and ingenious climate justice leader. He co-founded Peaceful Uprising, a grassroots group dedicated to defending a livable future through empowering non-violent action.

Anonymous hacks DOJ to avenge Aaron Swartz

From the open publishing newswire: Anonymous also posted an editable version of the website, inviting users to deface it as they pleased. Multiple pages -- not only the home page -- appeared to allow users to alter them.
In anger over the recent death [SUICIDE!! HELLO!?]of an Internet activist who faced federal charges, hackers claiming to be from the group Anonymous threatened early Saturday to release sensitive information about the U.S. Department of Justice.

They claimed to have one such file on multiple servers ready for immediate release.
The hackers apparently hijacked the website of the U.S. government agency responsible for federal sentencing guidelines, where they posted a message demanding the United States reform its justice system or face incriminating leaks to select news outlets.

"We have not taken this message lightly...."

GM Worker Willing to Die Seeking Labor Justice

From the open publishing newswire: If Jorge Parra lives to see the Portland Auto Show being held from January 24th through the 27th, he will have passed his 65th day on a hunger strike in support of the Association of Injured Workers and Ex-Workers of General Motors-Colmotores (ASOTRECOL). Appearing at press conferences outside the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Parra, who has been on this third hunger strike since November 20, 2012, first apologized for having a hard time knowing what to say due to his lack of eating, and then thanked the crowd of over 100 supporters who had gathered to protest against GM.

Dacks plans on using the Portland Auto Show as an opportunity to educate more people about GM's indifference toward the health and security of its employees. "The auto shows that are happening across the country are GM's highest profile events of the year, and if GM continues turning a blind eye to injustice, their abuses will be exposed in Portland, as they have been at the Detroit auto show." [...]

Martin Luther King, whose birthday was just celebrated, once said that the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. On balance, it is fair to say that King was correct. It was not so long ago that chattel slavery was legal and people were ruled by kings. And while the United States is hardly a workers' paradise, workers enjoy more rights than they did a century ago. These were not gifts handed down from above. People fought and sometimes died for them. The ASOTRECOL battle as well as the recent spate of anti-worker legislation such as that in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana raises the same question that workers in this country asked a hundred years ago: are we disposable cogs in a machine, or are we living, breathing people whose lives are to be valued far beyond the wealth we can produce for others?

Want to get involved? The following actions are planned:

1. 1/23 from approximately 12-2 and 6:30 to 7:30.

2. 1/24 or 1/25 for a time to be announced sometime between 10 and 3.

3. 1/24-1/27 various times during the auto show for leafleting and other activities.

VIDEO: "Stop The War On Gaza" Part 2 Action In Pioneer Square 11/21

From the open publishing newswire: JoeAnybody.Com Report-Back:

A follow up to saturdays action in Pioneer Square in which around 150 protesters rallyed and marched against Israeli occupation and war on Gaza. This action yielded about half as many people but they were just as motivated. As of November 20th, there has been a cease fire agreement reached but Netanyahu stated that it does not mean that Israel will not resort to invasion in the future and a top commander declared that quote "if there is quiet in the Gaza region, there will be no terror, if not then it may be a worse future" (AP). Palestinian activist and PSU organizer Wael Elsady led this speech packed rally along with other students who have been core organizers. Flags flew high as Portlanders sent their message of peace to Gaza, and though peace has temporarily been reached, they aim to bring awareness to the fact that Palestinians are still suffering by sanctions and enduring the hostility that Israel has imposed on them.
