"The Police Are Not Our Enemy" (Wrote this late last night....)
There are so, so many things to say about today. From the beautiful speech given by the young woman with the mask, to the thrumming energy in the crowd, to the stand-off at the Oregonian... there is a lot of good to say about what happened out there today. Then there was the woman shot with projectile weapons, the women trampled by horses, the mesomorphic displays of naked aggression by the police. All that pepper spray. Indeed, there is a lot to say. But I am tired now. It's been a long day. And the event that keeps my mind occupied, strangely, is the one that threw into stark relief for me the difference between what it means to yell "peace" and what it means to really be non-violent.

October 5—the World Can’t Wait in Olympia
march begins A small group of people committed to raising their voices to say "enough is enough" gathered in Olympia. It was a peaceful rally and march, with a wonderful blend of music and poetry. The march seemed to be the high point and few people returned for an evening vigil. A full moon rose over the few who stayed for the evening music.

Frustrated with pdx protests - a blast from the past....
Every time I read indymedia after a major Bush protest (been doing it since 2001) it's striking to me how EXACTLY the same the feedback is at least since late 2003.

take a moment to read the November 4th, 2004 (two days after Bush's re-election) posting at  http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2004/11/301926.shtml

sound familair?

"I'm tired of every protest being the same"
"I'm tired of authoritarian organizers controlling events"
"We need more effective actions"

I trace the phenomena to one thing: creative, diversity-minded-yet-anti-authoritarian activists in the community have stoped having a prominent role in organizing actions in this town. [Making an anonymous call for a black blac 2 weeks before a protest doesn't really qualify as organizing].

They complain, but have almost never since 2003 to actually take the serious time (say, 6 months to a year) to plan something BETTER.

Some of us don't bother going to these protests anymore because either:
a) they are are organized by the more authoritarian left, or
b) because they are barely organized at all.

Frankly, we have only ourselves, and our lack of commitment to radical organizing (as opposed to merely radical rhetoric), to blame.

Stop shit talking on indymedia: Don't mourn, organize.

While sitting in the emergency room awaiting an examination of my facial and sacrial contusions, I couldn't help but laugh loudly, despite the pain racking my body, as I watched the local news video stream of aggressive policemen dragging me across the asphalt at SW 12th and Jefferson, as the newscaster voice-over claimed that today's protest resulted in no injuries. I have been to many protests, witnessed countless acts of police brutality, but none compare to what I saw today. Bean bag guns, pepper spray, rubber bullets, and billy clubs; all of them used to attack peaceful protestors. Friends of mine were trampled by horses, beaten by billy clubs, and peppersprayed severely. All in an disgusting display of extreme police brutality. My hands are still shaking and my eye still hurts from pepper spray so I will try to write this as best as I can...
