Feedback sought: potential new worker-owned space in North Portland
I am part of a new workers collective which is considering purchasing a large house on N. Killingsworth, a couple of blocks from PCC Cascade, to use as a cafe-hostel-community event space. This would be a new space available for the progressive-left-anarchist-activist community, and cheap space for people traveling to Portland to stay (cheaper than the existing hostels). We are now assessing the feasibility of this idea, and whether or not it would be used and welcomed by the community.

World Trade Center Premieres, 9/11 Truth Movement Responds
Marquee of the Grand Lake Theater, Oakland There was a concerted 9-11 Truth activist response to the premiere of Stone's new film. Civil disobedience was planned in a few states, legal leafletting occurred in others. The mainstream press took some interest in the actions. Theater managers were so supportive of the leafletting in California, that activists were even invited to table in the lobby of one theater which boldly asked "Was 9-11 an Inside Job?" on its marquee.

Britain’s airline terror plot: Questions that need to be answered
The claim that American and British security forces have thwarted a terrorist plot to blow up commercial flights between Britain and the United States should not be accepted uncritically. It is impossible to determine at this point whether or not such an attack was in the offing, although the mass media have, as usual, reported the assertions of the British and American governments as indisputable fact, without bothering to ask for any specific information that would substantiate the official story.

Imperial President Challenged by American Bar Association
On January 24, 2006, the American Bar Association (ABA) issued a press release stating that, "Presidential signing statements that assert President Bush's authority to disregard or decline to enforce laws adopted by Congress undermine the rule of law and our constitutional system of separation of powers... " The press release was publicizing a report by a blue-ribbon ABA task force which was created in June 2006 to examine the "changing role of presidential signing statements" under the Bush administration. On August 8, 2006, the ABA's House of Delegates overwhelmingly approved the report by voting to call on President Bush and future presidents not to issue signing statements that claim the power to bypass laws, and it called on Congress to pass legislation to outlaw the practice.

Islam, Malcolm X and the right to self-determination
In the face of mounting aggression to attempt to stamp out the will and determination of the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples, Hezbollah and Hamas have increasingly come under fire, including being labeled as "terrorists." Unfortunately, the role of Islam in the struggle against imperialism confuses some in the progressive movement, but it shouldn't. The struggle of oppressed peoples for self-determination can and has emerged in different forms, including religious ones, and is best judged by the oppressed, not by ideologues from the oppressor nation....The Nation of Islam grew substantially in size and influence after Malcolm became a minister and a national spokesperson. His brother recruited him while Malcolm was in prison. The Nation of Islam provided hope for many in the Black community, through providing assistance to people in prison, addicts and alcoholics and many who had been beaten down by the ravages of racism and capitalism....The Nation, before and during the height of the Black liberation movement, explicitly argued for a separate Black nation. Today, this demand has manifested itself with, for instance, Minister Louis Farakkhan stating at the Millions More March last October that Black people have the right to govern themselves and have their own secretaries of education, defense, health, etc.The fact that the Nation of Islam has raised separatism shows that, ever since the compromise after the Civil War between the Nor th ern capitalists and the Southern aristocratic former slave owners to end Reconstruction—thereby killing what had been the beginning of a bourgeois democratic revolution in the South after the Civil War—there is serious concern that Black people in the U.S. are still treated as second-class citizens. One need only look at what happened during and after Hurricane Katrina to Black people on the Gulf Coast to understand that concern.

US Congress moves to sanction domestic spying
On July 26, the Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings to discuss a bill introduced by Republican Senator Arlen Specter, the chairman of the committee, which would ostensibly provide judicial oversight of the Bush administration's domestic spying programs.

In reality, the bill—the product of negotiations between Specter and the Bush administration—does nothing of the sort. Rather, it provides retroactive congressional sanction for the illegal National Security Agency (NSA) domestic spying operations secretly launched by the White House in September of 2001.

Neocons’ Middle East Scheme Is Backfiring
A Jacket for Richard Perle Back in 1996, a clique of Neocons, led by Richard Perle, concocted a scheme for Israel to "destabilize" the Middle East. The Palestinians were to be crushed and Iraq and Lebanon balkanized. The U.S. and UK were conned into doing the Neocons' dirty work in Iraq. Now, Hezbollah fighters have tossed a huge wrench into the not-so-clever plot. Instead of Israel becoming "safer," the Neocons have put its citizens at risk and its army in danger of defeat.
