The Lone Protester
A powerful statement can be made by one lone protester. People often think they have to wait to *follow* someone else leading a protest, or for someone else to *join* them, before they can protest properly. But my street performer mentality says there is no time like now to launch a protest, anywhere. Street performers do not like to *wait* for someone to tell them where they can perform. And it would behoove the honest dissidenter to embrace similar sentiments.

Cheney and Rumsfeld Shielded Telecoms from Domestic Spying Charges in the 1970s

Can anyone tell me what the situation is with the videos on Portland IMC. For one, why do none of the bittorrent files ever work? I have wasted so much time trying to watch those freaking videos. If bittorent is so great because it is non-proprietary, why is it that Warner Bros has just signed an agreement with BitTorrent? Why not have videos available for download that every one can download like quiktime, real player, anything but windows media.

Framework for a police state- US government phone spying targets all Americans
The exposure in Thursday's USA Today of a vast and secret National Security Agency data base tracking the phone calls of hundreds of millions of Americans is further evidence of the advanced preparations for the establishment of a police state in the United States. The NSA database is a blueprint for political repression and intimidation on a massive scale.
The patently illegal government surveillance has nothing to do with preventing terrorist attacks, as claimed by President Bush and echoed by both the media and Democratic Party politicians who criticize various aspects of the program. It has been implemented by a state apparatus which sees its major opposition as coming from among the American people, not scattered bands of Islamic terrorists. At a time of growing social opposition, the government is systematically collecting data to find out what people are thinking and to whom they are talking.
The phone-tracking program has, according to the USA Today report, been underway since shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The three largest telecommunications companies in the US, AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, agreed secretly to collaborate with the Bush administration and hand over to the NSA their records of every telephone call made by every one of their approximately 200 million customers. The program, carried out without court-issued warrants or Congressional oversight, is in flagrant violation of federal statutes as well as civil liberties guarantees laid down in the Bill of Rights.

Getting Down to the Basics
There is a strong focus in our communities on self-education. This is a great thing except for the fact that many times the most basic parts of education are ignored, creating an incomplete understanding of a subject that leads to serious problems within the community. Such a statement is hard to understand without a clear example. I will illustrate this using my own experiences as an HIV+ person dealing with the ignorance of the people around me. The moralistic reactions of these people will be used as an opening to discussions and critiques of problems in independent and self-autonomous communities.

QWEST IS THE ONLY U.S. PHONE COMPANY NOT SPYING ON YOU
Among the big telecommunications companies, only Qwest has refused to help the NSA, the sources said. According to multiple sources, Qwest declined to participate because it was uneasy about the legal implications of handing over customer information to the government without warrants. Qwest's refusal to participate has left the NSA with a hole in its database. Based in Denver, Qwest provides local phone service to 14 million customers in 14 states in the West and Northwest. Qwest service is available in the western states shown on the following map:

Fundamentally Sick: Freud and Human Society
For the purposes of this short paper it will suffice to restate the obvious and wonder how the health of modern human society could have been described as anything other than terminally ill. Society is only an expression of its component parts (people) and it is in that component that the overall health of any society can be measured. Accordingly, behavioural modification in a large group of people would alter the character and course of a society or nation. It is the behavioural modifiers that deserve attention.

As Bush’s popularity sinks to new lows—a boost from Hillary Clinton
The latest in a series of sinking polls has brought George W. Bush to a record low in terms of his own approval rating and placed him within striking distance of becoming the most unpopular president in US history.
Just 31 percent of the American public approves of Bush's performance as president, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll released Wednesday. An even smaller percentage—29 percent—approves of the administration's handling of the war in Iraq, the issue that weighs heaviest in dragging down Bush's ratings.
Two-thirds of those polled said they had little or no confidence that the Bush White House could end the war successfully, and little more than a third said they believed that the decision to invade Iraq was correct. About two thirds said they did not believe that Bush shared their priorities and that the US was in worse condition today than before Bush came into office.
The poll follows a similar survey done by USA Today/Gallup the day before that also recorded a 31 percent approval rating for the US president. Like the Times/CBS poll, it indicated a sharp drop in support among those considered by the administration to be its base, with little more than half of conservatives giving Bush a positive rating.

U.S. McDonalds chains found to be the worst in world for trans fat; other places outlaw it
I can believe this!

"Danish researchers found that higher doses of trans fats content in US fast-food chains' products than their counterparts in other countries. They published their data in New England Journal of Medicine."

Interesting confirmation of what I found on a trip overseas. When I went to Australia and NZ once, I was surprised to find that nothing I could find there--even if it was incredibly packaged--had zero transfat! For Americans, it's almost unaviodable: nearly everything highly packaged in the USA has transfat in it, which is basically corporations feeding you (literally) rotten swill cooked under high pressure for hours which makes it very evil for human health, though deceptively palatable with a smooth "mouth feel" that can only be gotten typically with more expensive (and healthy) oils like coconut oil for example or palm oil. It's great to see other countries cutting back--and setting up laws against--transfat even though fatland U.S.A. destroys its health and its children's health in the name of corporate psychopathic profits on and on. More on this corporate psychopathic salesmanship below in how the U.S. stopped eating coconut oil. Fascinating.
