a question ???
An estimated 2 to 3 million striking workers and students demonstrated throughout France yesterday against the Gaullist government's "First Job Contract" (CPE) legislation, matching the turnout at a similar day of action on March 28.
Tuesday's strikes and protests followed President Jacques Chirac's announcement last Friday that he had officially ratified the CPE, which permits employers to dismiss young workers without cause during their first two years of employment. Chirac said he would delay the enforcement of the law and support certain amendments to soften its impact, but he rejected out of hand the basic demand of millions of students, youth and workers who have been demonstrating and striking for more than a month to demand the withdrawal of the measure. The wave of protests, combined with opinion polls showing overwhelming opposition to the CPE and plummeting support for both Chirac and Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, reflect the deeply held and broadly felt conviction that implementation of the measure will open the floodgates for the imposition of "American-style" market policies and the destruction of workers' rights and social conditions.
The empty chairs at Friday's Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on a motion to censure President Bush for repeatedly ordering illegal electronic surveillance by the National Security Agency aptly symbolize the attitude of both big-business parties to the defense of democratic rights. Ten of the panel's 18 members absented themselves during testimony and debate over the censure resolution submitted by Wisconsin Democrat Russell Feingold, including five of the eight Democrats.
The five included liberals like Edward Kennedy, Charles Schumer and Richard Durbin, the deputy party leader in the Senate, as well as Diane Feinstein of California and Joseph Biden, a prospective candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. Another Democrat, Herbert Kohl of Wisconsin, apparently attended only out of courtesy to his state colleague. He said nothing and did not ask a single question of the witnesses who appeared to argue for or against the censure motion. Only one committee Democrat, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, indicated any support for Feingold's resolution, saying, "We know the president broke the law. Now we need to know why." This brings the total number of avowed supporters of the resolution to four, with Leahy joining Feingold, Tom Harkin of Iowa and Barbara Boxer of California. None of these four has suggested that the NSA spying program, which violates the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, should be shut down, urging instead that it be retroactively legalized and brought under the jurisdiction of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the secretive judicial body established by the 1978 law to review executive branch requests for such electronic spying.
George W. Bush can't run for re-election, but he doesn't have to remain president to retain control of the wealth and power of the entire US government. With full complicity of every single Republican member of the US Senate, he's it taking with him. This year, congress didn't delay in getting their dirty work done in short order, because most will run for re-election, and they're counting on the fact that by November, the usual collective amnesia will set in.
Don't let them get off easy this year: if they can't be properly punished for the crimes they've committed the least you can do is vote them out of office.

After the US-led invasion of Iraq, press freedom in neighboring Iran deteriorated dramatically, in spite of the superficially liberal regime of President Mohammad Khatami. Renowned journalist Akbar Ganji had already been in solitary confinement since the year 2000, 3 years after Khatami's election: underscoring the paradoxical nature of Iranian government.
On March 20th, 2006, the third anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq, Ganji was released from prison.

![]() obvious that if Cascadia does not re-unite (the Amerikan expansionist present Polk was the key figure in partitioning the Oregon Country back in the 1840s or Chinook Illahee in the Chinook Jargon) we will see increasing disparity between the two parts of Cascadia. One that is under Amerikan Fascist rule and the other under Canadian rule. But the fact that sociologists and demographers are saying the two Cascadias have commonality says alot given most people can not see beyond the artifical political borders already drawn up. Added to this I would generally say overall there is a growing disparity between US Amerikans and Canadians especially towards handling issues like poverty and environment as well as civil rights. So to simply say between Cascadians neglects the bigger picture that under Amerikan Fascist rule we are seeing human rights and environmental rights breaches increase. ![]() ![]()
Tonight I went to the Military Recruiting Center up on 1317 NE Broadway. Every Tuesday from 5:30 - 6:30 a small handful of dedicated people stand outside the Recruiting Center with anti-war signs and hand out literature to passersby. They have been doing this weekly for many months now. Catholic Workers, and at least one Veteran For Peace, they stand as a counterpoint to the military machines recruitment center. They stand for truth, while recruiters use deception and lies to lure in young people as fodder for wars of aggression.
Jean Kirkpatrick's recent intervention in Nicaragua's internal politics is a helpful reminder that US government foreign policy is marked not just by hypocrisy and sadism but also by delusional stupidity. Take this quote from an interview Kirkpatrick gave to the publication "Religion and Liberty":
"I don't think that Fidel Castro knows how to run a government that must provide the necessities in a society. He is quintessentially a revolutionary, committed to world revolution. Since that's his profession, I don't think he can last." Despite decades of US economic blockade promoted hard by Kirkpatrick, Cuba's people enjoy better education, better healthcare and better disaster prevention and relief services than most people in the United States. This truth was dramatically highlighted last year by the contrast between the US government's response to Hurricane Katrina and the Havana government's response to a series of equally devastating hurricanes in Cuba. Jean Kirkpatrick's views on Cuba are absurdly counterfactual. Her policy advocacy on Cuba has been a complete failure.
Eleven days ago, the Senate was poised to pass legislation that would have initiated the final step toward a Fascist regime in the U.S. Then the legislative juggernaut crashed to a halt, confronted by what may well be the largest series of mass demonstrations ever in the United States.

![]() When asked if I would continue to post photo essays here on indymedia during my extended travels through Europe, I replied that I doubted that I would have anything to post. However, on my first night in Berlin (my first stop) the contrast between the way Americans and Germans look at their recent past startled me so that I knew that I had to produce this photo essay. Some readers (on sites other than indymedia) may get upset by my insistence on presenting my images in a political or historical context. However, for me, all photography that is not for personal use is about political struggle or it's about surrender. I don't see this as imposing a context on helpless images, but being honest about images and their use and abuse in our society. Don't fear that I will continue to plague you with "reports back" from the rest of Europe. I expect to indulge a personal fascination with beauty that is unlikely, in the end, to find a context that will make it of use to anyone else. I am, after all, on vacation. I failed to make the text concise enough to fit in the captions. Therefore, the captions below the photos serve as links to the full captions which appear below in the article. The photo essay will also appear on my own photo site along with my past indy photo essays where it might be easier to follow. ![]()

Millions in the U.S. and worldwide now know there is evidence that 9/11 was an "inside job"; "false-flag," state-sponsored terrorism to provide a pretext for a premeditated war. But in exposing this evidence, the 9/11 Truth effort is also shedding light on a significant story-within-the-story: that the World Trade Center (WTC) was obsolete and asbestos-laced, and that its destruction on 9/11 may, for certain interests in the U.S., have been both desirable and profitable--independent of any interest in war.

A news report on April 3, stated that U.S. Evangelicals, numbering approximately thirty five million, are considering withdrawing their support from the Bush government; the failure in Iraq was cited as the principal reason. It seems incredible that thirty five million people deliberated over a previous decision to support Bush only to arrive at a diametrically opposite view today. In any religious organisation it is the few who decide for the many, a handful of people are making all the policy decisions and exercising a degree of influence as a result. Their power stems from the fact that the congregation conforms and does as it is directed.

The month-long struggle against the Gaullist government's "First Job Contract" has brought to the fore the fundamental class and political issues facing workers and young people not only in France, but across Europe and internationally.
The needs of youth and workers—decent-paying and secure jobs, education, health care, a future without war or repression—are in irreconcilable conflict with the interests of a financial elite who represent a failed political and economic system. This oligarchy of wealth and power is determined to make the working class pay for the crisis of the capitalist system. This is the real content of all the attempts to smear French youth and workers as modern-day Luddites who are opposing the inevitable consequences of economic "progress" and the realities of globalization. It is the subordination of social needs to the accumulation of profit and the personal wealth of the rich, not the global integration of economic life, which underlies the assault on the basic needs of the working class.

Economic globalization leads to the exclusion of the masses.. When world hunger increases, we must change the nature of the world economy to survive.. All people have to be liberated, not only the oppressed. We are all enslaved by a paradigm that makes us enemies of nature.

Senator Russ Feingold is one of a handful of Congress critters brave
enough to oppose the Police State Act, otherwise known as the Patriot Act, and the NSA trampling of the Fourth Amendment as well. Now Feingold has introduced a proposal to "censure President George W. Bush for ordering domestic eavesdropping on U.S. citizens without a warrant," according to Reuters. Bush deserves nothing short of impeachment, and then an orange jumpsuit, and his Straussian neocon crew should be rounded up and prosecuted for treason—but none of this will happen, not now, next week, next year, or after the next president is elected, or appointed. Feingold's "censure" (in essence, Congress critters issuing a "rebuke," or a mild slap on the wrist instead of indicting Bush for high crimes and misdemeanors) is a pathetic effort that will fail miserably because the whores of Congress are either onboard with the neocons or were long ago cowed into silence, as whores with closets filled with skeletons usually are.
Revelations surrounding domestic spying by the NSA have been in the news
since December. However, other reports of domestic spying operations by the U.S. government have flown under the corporate media radar. Investigations this past winter by groups such as the ACLU and some media outlets have revealed numerous occasions of FBI, Defense Department, and local police infiltration and monitoring of domestic peace groups. Further, some of the details surrounding the NSA program and other surveillance operations point to a new paradigm in intelligence operations, which involve massive "datamining" reminiscent of the government's supposedly shelved Total Information Awareness program. Scandals have erupted regularly almost every month of Bush's five-plus years in office, yet the corporate media have treated each revelation as a standalone item, offered without historical context, worthy of a few weeks at most in the spinning heads news cycle before being drowned out by the latest trivia. The spying revelations, what little is discussed publicly, have particularly suffered from corporate media's structural and ideological barriers to offering context and history.
