France: Crisis deepens over government’s “First Job Contract” legislation
Student protests were held across France on the weekend against President Jacques Chirac's promulgation of the Gaullist government's "First Job Contract" (CPE—Contrat premičre embauche) legislation. Despite overwhelming popular opposition and ongoing demonstrations, the president backed Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and ratified the law, which allows young workers to be fired without cause during their initial two years of employment.
Protests erupted in cities and towns throughout the country after Chirac's televised speech on Friday evening. In Paris, some 5,000 youth were blocked by riot police when they attempted to march to the Elysee palace, the president's official residence. Protestors chanted, "General strike, Villepin resign, Chirac in prison" Riot police outside the University of Paris (Sorbonne), which remains under police blockade, fired tear gas at student demonstrators. Authorities reported 100 arrests.
Students in a number of cities and towns blocked roads and train lines on Saturday and Sunday, and announced plans for further blockades and occupations of highways, train stations, airports, and public buildings. "Demonstrations and strikes didn't do the job, so we need to diversify our ways of protesting," Karl Stoeckel, head of the high school students union UNL (l'Union Nationale Lycéenne), told the International Herald Tribune.

The Impossibility of Flying Heavy Aircraft Without Training
There are some who maintain that the mythical 9/11 hijackers, although proven to be too incompetent to fly a little Cessna 172, had acquired the impressive skills that enabled them to fly airliners by training in flight simulators.

What follows is an attempt to bury this myth once and for all, because I've heard this ludicrous explanation bandied about, ad nauseam, on the Internet and the TV networks—invariably by people who know nothing substantive about flight simulators, flying, or even airplanes.

The Only Hope For the World
I see only one way out; a metamorphic leap of faith, an about face in the way we think, a decision to let go of everything that we, as a nation, once held dear, an understanding that the world will surely end unless we recognize the fact that we have no choice but to embrace our enemy as our brother, the one, without whom, we will never find peace, a brother-in-arms, enchained from head to toe, with whom we will either drown, or, together, might be allowed to live for yet another day....

US media reacts to French protests with hatred and fear
The US media, not known for following the internal political developments of other countries too closely unless it has a direct impact upon the US, has provided an inordinate amount of ill-tempered commentary on the wave of protests and strikes in France against the introduction of a law that enables employers to fire young workers without cause.
The reaction of the media has been universally hostile, varying from denunciations by the right-wing press of "mob rule" to the more low-key perplexity expressed by the liberal media, which suggests that French are suffering from some type of collective dementia because they believe they have the right to such things as job security.

This past winter both Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Greenpeace were in Antarctica to disrupt Japanese ships bent on killing whales. Nissui has surrendered and is giving up their share of the whaling fleet.

ANTI-IMPERIALIST MOVIE NIGHT & COMMUNITY FORUM
Join us to discuss how our personal experiences relate to the struggle against the worst of capitalism: IMPERIALISM. Discuss what we can do to build a grass-roots movement to stop this wicked force. Everywhere you look the signs of capitalism's ruin are around us. The police are brutalizing minorities, queers, and the poor. Fascist militias patrol this country's border aimed to deport or kill indigenous peoples, and migrant workers seeking to support their families. Secret American funded international security schools train rightwing death squads to guard drug crops, and sweatshops across the globe. Every scrap of life is being commoditized. In real time, the leaders of our economy rally to award and protect those militaristic forces that are polarizing, brutalizing, and tearing us apart. They call everyone that doesn't support their ways a terrorist, and work desperately to convince us that our inalienable rights are "privileges" to be taken away. Though our lives and situations are all different we have a common imperative to save our families, and communities from the force for wrong that that our culture and government has become.

Hope is alive! It is growing with clarity in our Hearts and Minds, and desire to build a different way. Hope leads us to pursue a way of life with dignity, worth fighting for. It leads us to stand in common struggle against imperialism. This is what we stand for.

Join us for something different.

Amnesty International reports 152 taser-related deaths in the US
The use of taser weapons by US police has been linked to 152 deaths since 2001, according to a report published Tuesday by Amnesty International. The report found that most fatal taser electrocutions involved unarmed subjects who posed no serious threat to cops or civilians at the time of weapon discharge. Many were electrocuted while already in restraints and/or received multiple electroshocks.
The report points to the systematic misuse of tasers by police and in prisons, documenting their utilization on the mentally ill, children, pregnant women and the elderly. It also highlights the widespread policy of using tasers as a routine compliance tool on subjects who are passively resisting or simply not perceived to be complying with orders. Amnesty International has also documented the use of tasers by jail guards and "anti-terrorism" interrogators as a means of punishment, degradation and torture.
