Back in the 1990s, when I was part of a union organizing effort at the University of Vermont, one of the assumptions expressed by the school's administration was the inevitability of the university's continuing corporatization. This assumption was also shared by many of the workers that we were attempting to organize. Furthermore, the assumption was not one specific to the university. Indeed, it was actually usually expressed as part of a larger reality that assumed that the world was going to continue down a path that would result in the ultimate supremacy of the world's largest corporations and banks running everything. Most of these businesses were naturally US- owned, even if they had their offices overseas.
The movement for immigrants' rights took an enormous leap forward two weeks ago, when a quarter-million demonstrators, overwhelmingly Mexican-Americans, jammed Chicago's city streets-in the middle of a workday.

The following critical analysis of the Cato Institute/Bush Administration's "immigration law reform" proposal was originally posted on the International Relations Center [IRC] web site on November 16, 2004.

After a duration of two weeks, Eric McDavid ended his hunger strike on
Friday, March 24. This decision was concurrent with the filing of a lawsuit on his behalf against the County of Sacramento and the United States Marshals Service alleging violations of his constitutional and federal statutory rights. These rights include food he can eat [ a vegan diet ] and outdoor exercise, two things he has been denied since he was first arrested. We are asking that people continue to contact the jail and the sheriff to protest Eric's mistreatment at their hands and insist that he be given vegan food. When calling, be sure to keep his x-reference number [ X-2972521 ] handy.

Summary of the KBOO am news for Friday, March 31st, 2006
A young mother from California pleaded not guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court to charges that she helped torch the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture in 2001.
In an indictment unsealed Thursday, Briana Waters, 30, of Berkeley, Calif., was charged with arson and using or carrying a destructive device during a crime of violence.
It seems that the scope of repression extends to anywhere there is dissent, and to any who post a threat to the established new world "order"; Any pretense, including old warrants, not-so-free association, and fear-based media lies are being used with deliberate intensity to jail and justify the murder of dissenters.
The Democrats unveiled the first major element of their campaign platform for the 2006 midterm elections Wednesday, making it plain that the party intends to cynically adapt to the mass hostility that exists within the American people to the US war in Iraq, while pledging to continue that war and even escalate the buildup of American militarism.
The statement, entitled "Real Security," was presented at Washington's Union Station by Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, together with other Congress members, as well as Clinton's former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former NATO commander and unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark—both of whom played key roles in the 1999 US war against Yugoslavia. The thrust of this document, reiterated by the party's Congressional leaders, is that the Bush administration has bungled the war in Iraq and the overall "global war on terror," and that the Democrats can do a more competent job of waging both.
After three weeks of behind-the-scenes US bullying, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a statement on Wednesday calling on Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program and giving the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 30 days to report back. Although amended at the insistence of Russia and China, the statement provides Washington with the pretext for escalating the confrontation with Tehran and its threats of punitive sanctions and military action.
John Bolton, the US ambassador to the UN, immediately seized on the vote as "an unambiguous signal to Iran that the Security Council, charged with the maintenance of international peace and security under the Charter, is now dealing with the issue." Ruling out any possibility of compromise, he belligerently warned that the US would be "back on the 31st day" in the UN Security Council "given the Iranian record to date of consistently flouting the International Atomic Energy Agency." The UN statement is riddled with the same glaring contradictions and rank hypocrisy as the preceding IAEA resolutions on Iran's nuclear programs pushed through by the Bush administration. It begins by "reaffirming its commitment" to the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and to the right of all states "without discrimination" to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. It then, however, goes on to express "serious concern" over Iran's decision to resume research into uranium enrichment, even though such activities are not banned under the NPT.

Since journalists influence the political and social climate in the subject of migration, they should show greater sensitivity toward racist exclusion..Integration is not a one-way street but can only succeed when we create the prerequisites and grant minorities equal rights.

Mainstream media has largely ignored two recent events that would have attracted sustained media attention in the past. Half a million Hispanics and other protesters flooded the streets of LA while in France a staggering three million protesters confronted the authorities. These protests occurred in quick succession but barely rated a mention in the popular press. Activists and analysts have been aware for some time that the independence and impartiality of the mass media has been compromised. Regardless of the magnitude and impact of a specific event, if it is considered to be incompatible with certain interests, it is disregarded.
While subpoenaing journalists directly was a "big mistake," says Stanford law professor Joseph Grundfest, "it shouldn't be surprising and it shouldn't disappoint anybody" that the agency is going after market participants' communications with journalists. "It would be a very strange world if people could be held liable for every lie they told except for the biggest lies they told to reporters," he(Joseph Grundfest,ex-SEC Commissioner and Stanford University law professor) adds."
A new roundup began on Tuesday. It's very different from previous ones. Immigration's already hit more than one cannery and, according to Ofjoshua's sources at ICE, they plan to continue raiding canneries through Friday. They've also added restaurants to their list for the first time.
The strangest thing about it is that they aren't holding anyone. They're photographing and fingerprinting them and then picking up their families for similar treatment before letting everyone go. From what I understand, it's as well planned and efficient as every other roundup, except they've done away with the detention, hearings, and deportation.

Whatever happened to empathy? How did the world suddenly become inhabited by good, red-blooded Americans and a bunch of gooks, slopes, ragheads, hadjis and any other pejorative which makes them seem less than human? How did the world suddenly become us and them? How is it that no one's beliefs and concerns have validity except ours? How has it come about that the world is now divided between us, our few allies, and a world of terrorists?

The well-to-do and those who can afford to shop elsewhere seem to be driving the prices of Goodwill outlets. Much of the better clothing prices strain the budget of someone who is either unemployed and looking for work or working at minimum wage. Isn't it time for Goodwill to set up at least one outlet with income restrictions for shoppers?

As concerns about peak oil mount, the latest group to jump on the
renewable energy bandwagon has been the biotech industry. In a March 13th 2006 press release building towards their national convention in early April in Chicago, Jim Greenwood, president of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), proclaimed that a new wave of genetically engineered technologies "will end our national addiction to oil." Nothing could be further from the truth.
