PEACE HAS NO BORDERS-A FESTIVAL OF RESISTANCE: Call to Action! June 16 & 17
The Western New York War Resisters League [WNYWRL], Veterans for Peace Chapter 128 [VFP] and the War Resisters Support Campaign (CANADA) [WRSC], calls on you to turn your back on U.S. war and imperialism and unite in solidarity to stop the illegal war in Iraq. The International Peace Bridge located between Buffalo, N.Y. and Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada will be where we, the people of the U.S., Canada and the world, take the courage to march and demand an end to the Iraq war. We will tell the U.S., "hands off Iraq, hands off U.S. soldiers," and tell Canada to act by letting them stay, by granting these soldiers asylum in Canada because they refuse to fight in the illegal war in Iraq.

Visualizing the Reach it Would Give Her
After everything, after the white smear of headlights from the darting car, Madison's dad threw out the t-shirt with the blood on it, did so without hesitating as if he had somehow confused the trashcan for the laundry hamper. Lately he had been ducking out in the middle of the night to go on short walks, mostly just down to the water. There was something about silently easing back into the apartment and checking in on Madison. Afterwards he could usually sleep.

Wagging the dog in Belarus
On March 19, elections were held in Belarus in which the incumbent president, Alexander Lukashenko, was reelected. Since Lukashenko was declared the winner, public officials and media pundits in the US and western Europe have launched a major public offensive to brand the election results "fraudulent" and "illegitimate."
While it is likely that the Belarus authorities engaged in electoral fraud to minimize the vote tally of the opposition, most informed analysts believe that the Lukashenko forces probably received a clear majority of the vote. This does not testify to the popularity of the regime, but rather to the limited support for the opposition whose espousal of "democratic" and pro-market "reforms" inspires little confidence among broad sections of the populations They have little reason to believe—given the experience of every other east European state—that they would benefit from the implementation of such a program.

It seems natural that in the March 19th protest rally in Portland, which was one of the largest in the nation, was followed up by two acts of civil disobedience, also the largest in the nation. Biofuel and Genocide
The biofuels movement is propelled by the powerful myth of progress; the myth that with the right technology, the right machines, the right fuel, we can go on living as we currently live. The myth of progress represents horrible misunderstanding of our past, and it equally misunderstands the future. Rather than leading to an age of renewable fuel, the biofuel movement is more likely to be the seed of a global scale genocide.

Embers of Empire: Blair in Oz
Blair's speech in Oz parliament today was notable for its familiarity - nothing new, same ol' same ol' shite. Wait! I think there was something that may have been a Freudian slip in reverse, Blair pleaded with a crumbling support base not to ostracise the yanks as they may "lift their drawbridge" (what a laugh). In order to survive, the voracious beast of Capitalism MUST feed off weaker nations, destroy the environment, wreak havoc and wage war to sustain its (military) economy. The world needs America like it needs a hole in the head; by all means Tony, let the yanks implode on themselves; allow the blood-sucking star-spangled-fangs to sink into its own neck; it would be a most entertaining spectacle.

Hey, General Assembly of MD: ”Reverse Deregulation!”

Most Marylanders can expect their electric bills to go up by $743 a year-a 74 % increase! In 1999, the legislature deregulated the industry. In a sweetheart deal, BGE was absorbed by Constellation Energy and required to begin buying its electricity on the open market. Meanwhile, BGE's electric-generating assets, originally paid for by the people, were turned over to Constellation in "a cash-free shuffle." The ratepayers are now being asked to pay again!

Women’s Rights Under Assault, Abortion Outlawed In South Dakota
The right to abortion was won in the United States in 1973 through a mass struggle in the streets that culminated in the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. A radicalized movement for women's rights, born out of the movement against the Vietnam War and other struggles for social justice at home, was sickened by the injustice of women being butchered in illegal back alley abortions and saw the right of women to control their own bodies as fundamental in the struggle for women's equality.

Why There's No Strategy to End This War
My local town of Eureka in northwest California had a pretty good peace rally on March 18, to mark the third anniversary of the U.S. attack on Iraq. They've put them on every year, including a big one just before the war started. It was a total local affair. An ad hoc group called Communities for Peace worked for eight weeks and, with the help of Veterans for Peace, pulled 2,000 people into the municipal auditorium on F street. There were plenty of young people and the crowd sat a bit restlessly through three speeches before hitting the streets. There were four marching bands.

The sudden departure of US troops from the Keflavík NATO base came as a complete suprise, not to mention an embarassment, to the current prime minister and others in the Icelandic government. France: May-June 1968 and today
"Is this another May-June 1968?" This question has repeatedly been raised recently in the French and international media.
Even before last Saturday, when 1.5 million people participated in 160 demonstrations throughout France against the "First Job Contract" (Contrat Premičre Embauche—CPE) being introduced by the Gaullist government of Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and President Jacques Chirac, the growing wave of protests was being compared to the events of nearly 40 years ago.
Some commentators have struck a reassuring note, arguing that the current situation cannot be compared with the late 1960s. Today, they say, the students are not calling for the transformation of society, as they were in the spring of 1968. The young people who have taken to the streets in recent days are, according to these pundits, merely looking to find a place within the framework of the existing social order.
Such commentaries generally avoid an obvious question: What happens when such "non-revolutionary" aspirations cannot be met by the capitalist system?
Another strain of media commentary gives the impression that the events of 1968 in France were dominated by radicalised middle-class youth.
