FBI agent testifies: Bureau resisted Moussaoui investigation before 9/11 attacks
The death penalty trial of Zacarias Moussaoui resumed on Monday, after Federal District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema partially reversed a decision that threatened to derail the government's case. Testimony continued with the defense's cross examination of FBI agent Harry Samit. Samit detailed the repeated rebuffs he received from top bureau officials as he sought an investigation into Moussaoui prior to the September 11 attacks.
Moussaoui has already decided to plead guilty to terrorism charges relating to his support for Al Qaeda, and the trial is focused on the sentencing phase. The government is trying to have Moussaoui sentenced to death on the grounds that he knew of plans for the September 11 attack, but did not tell FBI agents of these plans after he was arrested in August 2001. However, the testimony on Monday provided strong evidence of the complicity of top FBI officials, who refused to pursue leads despite clear indications that a plot to hijack airlines was under way.

The Israeli Lobby History, 1967 to the Present: The Fifth Branch of the U.S. Government
Israeli Illegal Settlements Member Militarily Training Children Two professors from Harvard University and the University of Chicago have just released an 81-page study on "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy" that concludes that the "overall thrust of U.S. policy in the [Middle East] is due almost entirely to U.S. domestic politics, and especially to the activities of the 'Israel Lobby.'" The study is currently available as a Harvard "working paper" with extensive footnotes or as a shorter version published in the London Review of Books. This is the LRB version.

The authors systematically examine the facts of the U.S.-Israel relationship, concluding that Israel is neither a strategic asset nor a "compelling moral case for sustained U.S. backing," and point a finger squarely at the Israel lobby for "[managing] to divert U.S. foreign policy as far from what the American national interest would otherwise suggest, while simultaneously convincing Americans that U.S. and Israeli interests are essentially identical." The authors examine the entire scope of the Israel lobby's efforts, from its intimidation of the press, think tanks and academia into presenting a misleading image of Israel...

Israel's strategic value isn't the only issue. Its backers also argue that it deserves unqualified support because it is weak and surrounded by enemies; it is a democracy; the Jewish people have suffered from past crimes and therefore deserve special treatment; and Israel's conduct has been morally superior to that of its adversaries. On close inspection, none of these arguments is persuasive. There is a strong moral case for supporting Israel's existence, but that is not in jeopardy...[from anything except Zionist theocratic government and the neocon linked corruption going on in Israel right now.]

An Open Letter to the Anti-War Movement
Everyone on Sunday felt good being around so many other people who seemed to share the same basic rationality of opposing the war. Big permitted demonstrations provide an important space for a variety of people to see the size of their movement. Maybe the experience will even move some people from being mere marchers to being committed activists and organizers. But I must say that these marches mean next to nothing if they are not part of a broader and more confrontational (not violent) strategy centered on direct action.

Something smells funny about the recent denunciation of maverick Peruvian presidential candidate Ollanta Humala for alleged human rights violations. Marking the third anniversary of the U.S. occupation of Iraq, thousands of activists from all parts of the globe engaged in nonviolent demonstrations and direct action focusing on disrupting business as usual at some of the symbolic "Pillars of the War in Iraq" - US government installations, military bases, congressional offices, recruitment centers and war profiteers. Actions took place in cities around the world, including Atlanta, Belfast, Boston, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Madrid, Managua, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Rome, San Francisco, San Salvador and Washington, DC. These actions demonstrate increasing boldness to challenge the mechanisms of the war in Iraq through coordinated, global nonviolent resistance.

Report from inside Wyden's office
A group of 19 committed peace activists came to the office of Ron Wyden to speak with him regarding his sponsoring of legislation to bring the troops home.

The group was made up of a diverse collection of people, both politically and in age. They ranged from 20 to in their 60's. The group was almost evenly split between men and women (with a couple more women).
While many in the group had differing political philosophies, we managed to stay unified in solidarity when it came to tactics. I.E. Peaceful, non-violent, and unified.

The Public Speaks for Itself
As mainstream media and unrepresentative governments narrow the scope and range of social discourse, the public network has exploded with millions of 'voices' that continue the public discourse in a social space conveniently created by the forces that fear free expression most. The blogosphere is without competition as the primary body of free speech in today's digital age. It is not unexpected that the content and character of independent speech is in contrast and opposition to the mainstream discourse of minority interests. It would seem that attempts to limit and tailor the social debate have resulted in unexpected consequences.
