No Panic - Dr. Stephan Lanka on Bird Flu, AIDS and the Corruption of Medicine
Is there a bird flu pandemic? This German Virologist says no, and does so in detail.

He makes some points that I'm sure will seem startling, but there's a wonderfully no-nonsense, common-sense approach to his thinking ("Think for yourself, look into it yourself"), and a refreshing lack of fear-mongering.

For the women of South Dakota: an abortion manual
By ANNIE ZIRIN (reposted by anon) 09.03.2006 12:56
The Dark Side of Liberal Imperialism
More than four years after the September 11 attacks and three years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, neither the war in Afghanistan, nor the war in Iraq appears to be drawing to a close. This is despite the fact that hundreds of thousands have protested the war in Iraq and more than 60 percent of Americans support partial or full withdrawal from Iraq. Fewer than four in ten Americans support President Bush today.

In a climate like this, the antiwar movement should be making great strides. The Bush administration should be on the run, if not teetering on the verge of collapse. Yet the administration plows ahead, and the antiwar movement appears disoriented only months after Cindy Sheehan's vigil at Bush's ranch helped to revive its fortunes.

The reawakening of the world working class
Politics is the science of perspectives. This is the key to all our work. The present world situation entirely confirms the general line of our perspectives worked out in previous world perspectives documents. It may be necessary to correct this or that detail, but the fundamental analysis of the period through which we are passing has been confirmed by the march of events. This should strengthen our confidence in the ideas of Marxism and in ourselves.
It is a supreme irony that so many have abandoned Marxism - some explicitly, others implicitly - precisely when history has vindicated its main postulates in a laboratory fashion. The bourgeois, the reformists, the Stalinists and the sects, have not the slightest idea of the real processes at work. It is not an accident that all other tendencies are all in a state of utter confusion, pessimistic and skeptical. The strategists of the bourgeoisies - especially in the USA - have no real perspectives. In the words of Trotsky, they are tobogganing towards disaster with their eyes closed.

U.S. repression of journalists
Bush and his ultra-right honchos are really pissed this time - in their efforts to track down a US loyalist, who spilt the beans on domestic spying, the Bush gestapo are now targeting journos and the free press. All the 'security' agencies at this megalomaniac's disposal have been commandeered for the task. This attack on the free press is yet another devastating blow directed at the already battered body of American democracy and liberty. America, the home of the brave and the land of the free, has been relegated to the historical record. This new land is an abominable aberration of the original.

"..and we all shine on.." - in the dark!

[History does record that the American Revolution was won by a brave and fearless people - they are without doubt in extremely short supply today!]

School Diet Change Brings Improved Behavior, Healthier, More Focused Students
"Before the Appleton Wisconsin high school replaced their cafeteria's processed foods with wholesome, nutritious food, the school was described as out-of-control. There were weapons violations, student disruptions, and a cop on duty full-time. After the change in school meals, the students were calm, focused, and orderly. There were no more weapons violations, and no suicides, expulsions, dropouts, or drug violations. The new diet and improved behavior has lasted for seven years, and now other schools are changing their meal programs with similar results."

Lauren, you rock! Thanks for all your work and this great re-framing.

And the focus on the absurd disparity between the probation sentence given the USFS serial arsonist versus the life terms facing the eco-arrestees is compelling (NPR thought so, anyway...).

Harsh Sentences Silence Radical Environmentalists

Listen to this story... by Martin Kaste

All Things Considered, March 8, 2006 · The radical environmentalists of Eugene, Ore., have disappeared or gone quiet. Some say it's because of a government crackdown that includes stiff fines and harsh prison sentences. The sentences have been so harsh, in fact, that even a victim of one arson attack isn't sure it was fair.

Dont let a 14 acre community farm in South Central LA turn into a Wal-Mart warehouse!
South Central Farmers' eviction stayed for one week

South Central Los Angeles, CA, March 6, 2006 - Last Friday and today, several tenants of the 41st and Alameda farm site filed a form at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department claiming a right of possession to the property. Today, these tenants submitted the form they filed with the Sheriff's Department to the Los Angeles Superior Court. The Court scheduled a hearing on March 13, 2006, to decide the tenants' claim that they have a right to be in possession of the property. Filing the claim of right to possession means that evictions should not take place until at least March 13, 2006.

The farmers and their supporters are still planning actions throughout the week to put pressure on the mayor and the city council to save the farm.

Stand in Solidarity with the Women of South Dakota! Planned Parenthood Action in Eugene
South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds signed a ban into law this week that criminalizes abortion in the state of South Dakota! This ban is part of a larger strategy by anti-choice extremists to eliminate the right to abortion in the United States.

Oregonians are nothing less than outraged by this severe attack on women's health and safety.

Planned Parenthood will fight the ban in court to protect women but we need you to join us in our efforts.

The Bush administration and the global decline of American capitalism
In addressing the question posed by David North in his opening remarks to this meeting—Is world capitalism on an upward trajectory, or is it in decline and heading for explosive upheavals?—it is particularly important to draw a balance sheet of the trajectory of American capitalism.
The relative strength or weakness, health or morbidity of American capitalism, and its trajectory over an extended historical period, is in the most fundamental and objective sense a world question. The fate of world capitalism over the past century has been linked to that of the United States more than to any other national economy or national state.
