BushCo. Planning 'Contra Wars Redux' vs. Nicaragua, Mexico
February 1, 2006 -- Bush administration "Back to the Future" antics in Central America. According to high-level U.S. intelligence sources, the Bush administration is planning a redux of the Contra wars of the 1980s. With polls showing that Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega may become Nicaragua's next President in November 2 elections, the Bush administration has ordered U.S. intelligence agencies to establish a network of small clandestine communications stations along the Honduran and Costa Rican borders with Nicaragua, supplemented by additional support bases in El Salvador. Many of those involved in the covert operations are veterans of the Contra wars of the 1980s.

The State of the Union speech: Bush repeats litany of lies on Iraq war
The State of the Union speech Tuesday night was a typically choreographed affair in which George W. Bush appeared before a fawning audience and an uncritical media to deliver a stale rehash of the lies which the administration has employed to justify the war in Iraq and its attacks on democratic rights at home.

Nowhere in the Capitol chamber was there any expression of the mass popular opposition to the war in Iraq or the mounting concerns of American working people about the deepening social and economic crisis. Instead, Bush's audience consisted of the Washington establishment, the political representatives of the ruling financial aristocracy, a majority of them millionaires in their own right.

Oregon Democrats, GOP join forces against independent candidates
The Socialist Equality Party's statement outlining the program on which it will run candidates in this year's mid-term elections, "For a socialist alternative in the 2006 US elections", included a crucial observation about the obstacles we face in this campaign:

"The American political system is profoundly undemocratic. The two-party system perpetuates itself by seeking to exclude from the ballot all independent alternatives, especially those on the left. It does so through of a welter of election laws that impose arbitrary and prohibitive signature requirements for independent and third-party candidates, deadlines for filing nominating petitions that are designed to block rather than facilitate ballot access, and a corporate-controlled media that systematically excludes critical viewpoints—especially those of socialists."

Medicine Lake cadera with Mt Shasta, this area may soon be an industrial waseland On January 27th, Native Americans and their supporters from across the country gathered at the Calpine energy company headquarters in San Jose to protest the company's proposed plans to build power plants and drill for geothermal energy in the culturally important Medicine Lake Highlands, located in Northeastern California. The tribal members and supporters demand that Calpine immediately cease and desist from its proposed energy extraction plans as this would devastate the Native cultural and natural environmental landscape around Medicine Lake. This power, like the Klamath dams power, would be used in Porltand and other Oregon cities.

Bush's 130,000 Hostages: Why the U.S. Probably Won't Attack Iran
Jimmy Carter presented Iran with 52 hostages. George Bush has done a lot better, sending 130,000 Americans across the ocean as guarantees of his administration's good behavior toward the Islamic Republic. Last week, Tehran reminded us of its ability to make life unpleasant for US forces in Iraq by hosting Moqtada al Sadr for a high profile visit, in the course of which he obligingly pledged that his militia, the Mahdi army, would retaliate for any American attack on Iran. His spokesman quoted him as telling his hosts "If any Islamic state, especially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is attacked, the Mahdi Army would fight inside and outside Iraq."

Progressive Democrats Need to Clean House...and Senate
The cowardly and calculating decision by 19 Democrats who voted to block a filibuster against the Alito Supreme Court appointment (and by Sen. With the help of the Democrats, Alito to be confirmed as US Supreme Court Justice
The Senate voted by a 72-25 margin on Monday afternoon to close debate on the Supreme Court nomination of Samuel Alito. The number voting for cloture was well above the 60 required to halt a filibuster. The 44 Democrats were divided nearly evenly, with 19 voting to close debate, while 25 voted to allow it to continue.

The final vote on Alito is scheduled for Tuesday morning, in time for him to be approved before Bush's State of the Union address in the evening. Alito is assured to pass, as he requires approval from only a majority of the senators. A preliminary vote tally indicates that he has the support of 54 Republicans, in addition to at least four Democrats.
