How Many Iraqis Have Died Since the US Invasion in 2003?
President Bush's off-hand summation last month of the number of Iraqis who have so far died as a result of our invasion and occupation as "30,000, more or less" was quite certainly an under-estimate. The true number is probably hitting around 180,000 by now, with a possibility, as we shall see, that it has reached as high as half a million.

But even Bush's number was too much for his handlers to allow. Almost as soon as he finished speaking, they hastened to downplay the presidential figure as "unofficial", plucked by the commander in chief from "public estimates". Such calculations have been discouraged ever since the oafish General Tommy Franks infamously announced at the time of the invasion: "We don't do body counts". In December 2004, an effort by the Iraqi Ministry of Health to quantify ongoing mortality on the basis of emergency room admissions was halted by direct order of the occupying power.

Public Defenders Should Go On Strike
The situation with underfunded public defenders, and plea bargains being thrown around more often than not, with poor people caught in the mix, denied the rights given them legally, to fair and proper representation, needs to stop. Now. This is no longer a situation where public defenders can stand around and keep pointing fingers at those funding them, usually the state. At a certain point, public defenders become accomplices in these crimes against the poor...

US: IBM to freeze pension plan in 2008
In the latest attack on retiree benefits for US workers, technology giant International Business Machines (IBM) announced Thursday, January 5 that it will stop contributing to its traditional pension plan in 2008.

The company expects to save billions of dollars by moving employees over to a 401(k) savings plan and freezing the existing plan from 2008. Together with changes proposed for 2006, which are under consideration in several other countries, IBM expects to cut worldwide retirement-related expenses this year by $450 million to $500 million. RIP Comandanta Ramona
San Cristbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mxico, January 6th 2005. - A Maya Indian rebel leader and women's rights champion who became a Mexican heroine to anti-globalisation activists has died after a battle against cancer. The woman who had the command of the taking of the city of San Cristobal on the 1st of January 1994, died this morning 6th of January 2006.

Comandanta Ramona, a tiny indigenous woman, commanded the strategy of the taking of San Cristbal de Las Casas, Chiapas during the armed uprising of the 1st of January 1994. She was a woman who gave her life for the struggle of her people, and who despite her delicate state of health, was always present.

"Mexico has lost one of those fighters that matter, and a piece of our hearts has been ripped out," Marcos told supporters during a speech in Chiapas. Marcos left his jungle hideout last Sunday to start a nationwide tour that seeks more support for Indians and the poor before July's presidential election.

He put the tour on hold to attend her funeral in the rebel stronghold of Oventic.
