More revelations of illegal spying by US government
Over the past week, several new reports have emerged casting additional light on the vast extent of illegal spying carried out by the US government. It is becoming increasingly clear that the government has initiated a major project to collect and database the communications of US citizens and non-citizens, including opponents of the war in Iraq and other policies of the Bush administration.

Moves to initiate the program began before September 11, 2001. However, as with all the policies pursued by the government since then, the terrorist attacks have been used to justify the spying under the overarching pretext of the "war on terrorism."

Missing persons and the cops
This is about my recent experience with seeking help from the cops. The question it raises is:

What do you do when someone you care about goes missing? Is there an alternative to calling the cops, for those of us only too aware that people in physical or mental distress who need help stand an unreasonably high chance of being shot dead by those who are supposedly sworn to "protect and serve"?

The plight of the unemployed professional
"Bait and Switch" by Barbara Ehrenreich, 2005

In late 2003, with the U.S. in recession, unemployment stood at 5.9 percent. Almost 20 percent of those were white-collar professionals, probably close to their proportion of the workforce. This was a change, Ehrenreich writes, from previous recessions, where the unemployed were disproportionately blue-collar.

911: Some WTC History You Might Not Know
After 911 the media romanced a glorious past for the World Trade Center, but what was the true condition of the twin towers, WTC 7, and the rest of the complex prior to September 1, 2001? The censored story says the WTC was expendible and that its demoltion had been planned long before.

160,000 FOIA requests = 160,000 NSA surveillance?
IS THE NSA MONITORING INDYMEDIA?

WARNING: if you are a Yellow Dog anti-Dem, skip this article, please. (You don't have to be a Dem to read it, but if the word 'Democrat' puts you into a dither such that you have to post endless comments -- please spare us and just skip this article altogether.)

FOIA means "Freedom of Information Act", enacted during the Carter years and targeted by regressive neo-cons ever since. One of the last vestiges of freedom that we have - the freedom to demand to know what the government is doing.

These 160,000 requests demand that the White House release Justice Department memos outlining the supposed authority for the illegal government (National Security Agency) spying on, probably, the entire communications network of the U.S.A., including Portland Indymedia. We need to know a lot more - like who was spied on and why - but this is a start.

The approaching war with Iran
In March 2006, Iran will take Iraq's switch to the petroeuro to new heights by launching a third oil exchange. The Iranians have developed a petroeuro system for oil trade, which when enacted, will once again threaten U.S. dollar supremacy far greater than Iraq's euro conversion. Called the Iran Oil Bourse, an exchange that only accepts the euro for oil sales would mean that the entire world could begin purchasing oil from any oil-producing nation with euros instead of dollars.

Skirmishes in the information wars
There are only two weapons in the imperial tool chest: force and deception. The brutal colonial occupation of Iraq has provided us with a lavish example of the former, but the twin-axel of deception is more abstruse and difficult to pin down. Sure, there's the flagrant propaganda that floods right-wing radio and political talk shows, but that tells us little about the state-sponsored disinformation-programs that permeate every area of American life.

permitting ourselves dept.: a post-'normal' booke review: chellis glendinning, post-civ
first page of book excerpt, note this review is 'direct', not mediated so much this review employs two main elements: orthodox "texting" and as well, permitting myself to art into another direction than perhaps previously anticipated. incorporated into this post is image, non-blunt points, rectangles, and other lines, along with 'marginal' commentary. All of this certainly cuts down on the verbiage and gets to "the point" (and allows for more broad input from those whose spirit just really ain't oriented to 'composing' formal ideas of text, re: "book reviews"). Lastly, this way allows people to leave *traces* of their spirit in a less mediated way.

CHAMISH: Well Timed Sharon's "stroke/poisoning" sounds just like Rabin's MURDER in 1990s..

"The First Stroke: Dec. 19 Prime Minister Sharon shares drinks with Shimon Peres in the Knesset. Within half an hour, Sharon is driven to hospital unconscious.....He was brought into the hospital by his bodyguard, Yoram Rubin. As a good chunk of Israel knows today, it was the Peres-Rubin team that murdered Yitzhak Rabin. When Rubin was shown on television news accompanying Sharon's stretcher, suspicions spread throughout the country.

"For two days, Sharon remained in hospital where he underwent
intensive tests. We may ask, how did they miss the blood clot that struck
Sharon barely two weeks later? The timing of Sharon's latest stroke is uncanny. It occurred one day after he was implicated in an enormous scandal."

Free Bamboo, Get Involved
Bamboo came to Seattle from Thailand as a one-year-old baby Asian elephant in 1968. She grew into a gentle adult, docile enough to be walked on zoo grounds and touched by zoo visitors. After decades of living in a small zoo habitat, Bamboo began displaying stereotypic neurotic bahavior of constant pacing and head-shaking. Woodland Park Zoo (WPZ) transfered Bamboo in August 2005 to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma. She continues to display stereotypic neurotic behavior, so we are working to get her transferred to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.

European media report US plans to strike Iran
German and Turkish media have reported that the US government is planning air strikes against Iran. The reports suggest that the attacks could take place in early 2006.

On December 30, the German magazine Der Spiegel discussed recent articles on the subject in the German press, including a report by Udo Ulfkotte of the news agency DDP. Citing unnamed "Western security sources," Ulfkotte wrote that a possible air strike was discussed during a recent meeting between CIA Director Porter Goss and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdrogan.
