Chicago Turns Down Discounted Venezuelan Oil
The Chicago Transit Authority is refusing an opportunity to alleviate commuting costs for hundreds of thousands in the Windy City's low-income neighborhoods. Instead of accepting deeply discounted fuel from the Venezuela-owned Citgo Petroleum Corporation, the city is instead raising fares to solve budget shortfalls.

Another Game of “I Spy”
"I spy," Big Brother, on the other end of the phone or Internet line. "I spy," Joseph McCarthy and the FBI on witch hunts. "I spy" an entire governmental agency, poking into the files and personal business, of anyone voicing dissent to their imperialistic war. And our government is not holding back many secrets in their search this time, instead of "communists," their just wanting possible "terrorists." Not to worry, the average person has nothing to hide; "our government is here to serve us, after all." This is at least what our administration would like us to think.

2006 LIVING HOLIDAY TREE
Every November the City of Portland raises a holiday tree at the Pioneer Courthouse Square in celebration of the winter holidays. However, while the tradition brings much joy and happiness to the local citizenry, it is not a sustainable practice, and the tradition does little to evade the city of its historical nickname "Stumptown." In addition, we believe that a living holiday tree for the 2006 winter season, a tree that would continually grow taller each successive year, could be the grounding symbol of a new heritage and be a possessor of memories from one holiday season to the next.

Vida Silvestre, libre de costo (Desde Puerto Rico)
Trato hecho...

¡Hazlo Tu Mism@!

Seria mejor unir nuestras manos para amar y sentir, no para hacer negocios y agredir.

Jake the Snake is FBI
Like many of us in Cascadia, my thoughts during the last month of 2005 turned constantly to those imprisoned for alleged Earth Liberation Front (ELF) arsons. Isolated, intimidated, ripped from everything they love, deprived of all but the minimum for survival, the question resounds: why? Why? WHY?

As the initial tumult subsides, the answer has become increasingly clear. The reason why many have been subpoenaed, six have been jailed, one of those jailed has taken his life and a community has been shaken to the core is this: Jacob Ferguson.

Cheap Food and Privilege/ Using Food As A Weapon
It is an established fact that we can grow enough food on Earth to eliminate hunger. The issue is distribution of food, not the production of food. The issue of distribution is undermined by capitalism and political power struggles that play out in the economics of the daily life of the poor. I have had food issues my whole life from institutional food in protective custody, to foster families' food, to dry milk at the end of the month, free lunches & food stamps.

The Poor Can’t Play With the Rich
I really cannot have friends that are not poor. And this seriously limits my social circles. There is no way to share a life with someone in another social caste, is my honest life experience. Poor people see the underbelly of America that privileged white kids in suburbia do not even know about. And if we harbor any resentment towards those privileged kids and their parents, WE are negative jerks. We are the problems...

Laws Reflect A Society
You can tell a lot about a society from its laws. Laws give us a glimpse into social order from eras long past. Some of the oldest known written laws that we've found so far, are in the Code of Lipit-Ishtar. In the aftermath of November's California Special Election, the Democratic Party is acting as a critical prop for the beleaguered administration of Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Democrats responded to Schwarzenegger's political debacle in the Special Election, in which all of his favored ballot initiatives were defeated, by calling for a new spirit of bipartisanship. The governor responded by appointing a prominent Democrat as his new chief of staff.
