Uproar in US Congress over Iraq withdrawal vote
The US House of Representatives was thrown into an uproar Friday when the Republican majority forced a vote on a sham resolution calling for the immediate withdrawal of all US troops from Iraq.

The measure was placed on the agenda at the conclusion of the House's final pre-vacation session in a bid to embarrass the Democrats and retaliate against Democratic Congressman Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania, who the previous day had called for a pullout of US occupation forces over the next six months.

++GERMANY: MASSIVE PROTESTS AGAINST NUCLEAR WASTE++
Since November 19, yet another transport with twelve containers of radioactive waste (called 'Castor') from the plutonium plant La Hague (France) is on its way to the so called interim storage in Gorleben in the Wendland region, an area well known for 20 years of resistance to nuclear power. The transport is scheduled to arrive in Gorleben late monday evening. The police announced to send at least 11,000 local and federal cops into the region.

After the death of the French activist Sébastien Briat during the protests in 2004, both police and activists expect a more heated atmosphere for this transport.

The much-maligned Mr. Marx said history often begins as tragedy and repeats itself as farce. That was never more true last Friday night as we watched the great Iraq war "debate." It was as a manipulated and managed an episode of theater that I have ever seen. It was more like a fraternity food fight than an honest discourse on all sides.

Boise Neighbors Discuss Mississippi Lofts Project
Architectural speculation Mississippi Avenue, between Skidmore and Fremont, seems to be center stage for new up-scale development. In the last two years, the identity of the area has changed rapidly. So much so, that I can no longer use data from the 2000 census reliably. Large swaths of property are being bought up by prospectors and the plans of development of churning. In the next two years the identity of this neighborhood will be very different. In December 2002 E.D. Hovee and Company (EDH) prepared and Econmic Development Strategy for the Mississippi Historic Distric. That can be viewed in .pdf form here, I will refer to pages and diagrams from that report, so best to open it up.

The Republican War on Science
This is an article about a book which describes how Republicans deliberately muddy the waters on science issues to promote their own agenda. Science can be bought now, and Republicans are encouraging crap science which helps cement their own agendas. This goes beyond just how they handle climate change, but how the government handles many matters of scientific inquiry. If they had their way, we'd be ignorant, drooling dolts eating up bs on intelligent design and never taking any action on anything, because science is too "uncertain." This article explains how a law was set up in the Gingrich era which demands extensive peer review on scientific matters. This law is being used as a tool for stalling taking action on issues unfavorable to the Republicans and their campaign contributers.

US House of Representatives approves $50 billion in social cuts
In the early hours of Friday morning, the House of Representatives passed a budget reconciliation bill that includes cuts of nearly $50 billion over five years, primarily in social programs for the poor. At the same time, Congress is considering extending tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthy in the amount of $60 billion-$70 billion over the same period.

The budget reconciliation bill modifies requirements for mandatory spending programs, in particular, entitlement programs such as Medicaid, Social Security, Food Stamps and Medicare. Unlike the rest of government outlays, known as discretionary spending, which are allocated each year in appropriation bills, spending for these mandatory programs is determined by legal requirements. If the reconciliation bill is signed into law, it will mark the first time since 1997 that entitlement programs have been slashed.

Should the Irish be Trusting the Brits?
Peace Forum at Georgetown The Irish people want peace, with justice, in the Brit-occupied Six Counties of N. Ireland. This is why, in 1998, they voted for the "Good Friday Agreement" (GFA), a formula for power sharing. At an Irish peace forum on 11/18/05, at Georgetown U., panelists debated the GFA. They all seem to agree the now-suspended Six County "Assembly," had to be restored in order to make any additional progress. However, many other issues, like building trust, remain.

Common Sense: Vol. #13
Out sourcing has become a common term to many Americans, particularly those that have seen their jobs disappear, only to end up in another part of the country, or more likely, in another country altogether. Is this a bad thing for American labor? That of course depends largely on who is making the assessment. President Bush has said that it is a good thing for the economy. His "head of the Council of Economic Advisors", N. Gregory Mankiw explained that it is just a new way of doing International Trade. Many economists agree, but politically, it is not so easily swallowed.
