How to be an activist
A Recently published article entitled 'The Death of Environmentalism', by Michael Shellenberger, has caused a stir within the progressive community. The paper argues that because environmentalism consists of special interest groups, and the problem they wish to solve is so vast, that the project is doomed to fail. Shellenberger insists that this issue applies to a variety of activist groups and suggests "... organizing progressive movements and institutions around a broader vision and a set of common values." The following is an attempt, based on censored ideas, to answer this challenge.

Nature is Angry
Last weekend while at the coast, reaffermation of the degredation of our environment was everywhere. At the beach i found 2 common murres sitting on the beach waiting to die. Both looked healthy but woul'nt move when i went to pet them. Seems there's not enough plankton and krill in the sea to support their diet cuz the sea temperature has risen dramatically in the past year. Also at the Nehalem river my buddy and I both had nightmares while sleeping there. Usually when you're that far out in the woods you hear and see all sorts of wildlife. This place was dead. I heard like 2 frogs ribeting and saw 1 huge spider. The river was full of algae and like 70 degrees!!! When we fuck with nature and pollute it and cement it over, gruesome awful creatures will arise out of that muck. I think the bible says something about how when Judement day comes, evil creatures will rise out from under the earth and torture and mutilate everyone. Serves us right huh?

Scientists Question Safety of Riot Control Ray Guns
New "less lethal" weapons being developed by the Pentagon for "crowd control" don't seem to be as painless or inoffensive as the Pentagon wants people to think. These microwave tossing weapons can burn holes through skin if they encounter someone with metal in their pockets. They might melt glasses or contacts in the eyes. So why is the Pentagon even thinking of using them? More importantly, why are our police and sheriffs thinking of buying them? Are terrorists going to be rioting here??????

Wow! Is that figure from war all over the world? Nope. That is just deaths from vehicles on American roads this past year. The article actually sounds upbeat that the figure went down from last year. Hooray! It just disgusts me to no end that we allow our roads to run red with the blood of our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and children. And somehow this is acceptable to us as a society? It's like that law that just passed that allowing gun dealers to sell guns in an irresponsible manner and we can't sue the gun makers for their negligence. Man this country has gone beyond wacko! Meth Epidemic Sweeps America: Bush Drug Policy Targets Marijuana
NEWSWEEK: The Bush administration has made marijuana the major focus of its anti-drug efforts, both because there are so many users (an estimated 15 million Americans) and because it considers pot a "gateway" to the use of harder substances. "If we can get a child to 20 without using marijuana, there is a 98 percent chance that the child will never become addicted to any drug," says White House Deputy Drug Czar Scott Burns, of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. "While it may come across as an overemphasis on marijuana, you don't wake up when you're 25 and say, 'I want to slam meth!' " But those fighting on the front lines say the White House is out of touch. "It hurts the federal government's credibility when they say marijuana is the No. 1 priority," says Deputy District Attorney Mark McDonnell, head of narcotics in Portland, Ore., which has been especially hard hit. Meth, he says, "is an epidemic and a crisis unprecedented."

The Power of Nightmares: Baby It's Cold Outside
. . . Should we be worried about the threat from organised terrorism or is it simply a phantom menace being used to stop society from falling apart?
. . . In the past our politicians offered us dreams of a better world. Now they promise to protect us from nightmares.
. . . The most frightening of these is the threat of an international terror network. But just as the dreams were not true, neither are these nightmares.
. . . In this series, the Power of Nightmares explores how the idea that we are threatened by a hidden and organised terrorist network is an illusion.

A Leap of Faith and a Leap to Rational Knowledge: Two Very Different Kinds of Leaps, Two Radically Different Worldviews and Methods This article was written by Bob Avakian, Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, in response to a letter that sent to him. In addition to attacking communism, that letter also argued against the scientific viewpoint and method and insisted that atheism is just another form of religion. This article by Chairman Avakian speaks to a number of points in that letter but focuses on the fundamental difference between a communist and scientific outlook and method on the one hand and, on the other hand, a religious worldview which relies on "leaps of faith."

Facade democracy in America
Although there is a growing social movement within the US, angry at the dominance and control of the country by the industrial-military capitalist elites, this is not reflected in American politics.

Speaking in San Francisco in August, Arundhati Roy, the Booker-prize-winning writer and social activist, offered a good parallel to explain why it will make no difference whether Bush or Kerry is elected President. "It's not a real choice," she said. "It's an apparent choice. Like choosing a brand of detergent. Whether you buy Ivory Snow or Tide, both are owned by Proctor & Gamble."

Noah’s Arc Ministry
Noah's Arc Ministry (NAM), for all intensive purposes, does not exist among the Christian Churches. Why do Christians deny the very first ministry, the story of Noah's Arc and the animals? This was God teaching us how to take care of animals and this message is lost among almost all Christian Church's. Look at it this way, if in God's eyes humans come before animals, why didn't God say, "Fill the arc with only humans and I will take care of the animals." Instead he said take 2 of each animal in the arc and only Noah's direct family.

Pentagon Black Ops in Uzbekistan Revolt--U.S. Airbase Evicted Yesterday
As first reported here on July 8, relations between Washington and Tashkent finally boiled over after evidence that Pentagon special operations teams were involved in the Islamist revolt against President Islam Karimov's government in the town of Andijan on May 17. On July 29, Tashkent formally evicted the United States from its airbase at Karshi-Khanabad, also known as "K2." The Pentagon was given 180 days to evacuate all personnel, aircraft, and equipment from the base, which had been used by the United States since the Afghan war broke out following 911.
