Neal Stephenson 17.06.2005 13:42
Turn On, Tune In, Veg Out
Jedi Geeks An interesting commentary by Neal Stephenson, one of my favorite authors. While the similarity between the Jedi and modern-day geeks could be debated, it is interesting--and true from my experience--that geeks are both needed and despised. And those in power will always twist the data and facts--supplied by the geeks--to suit their own goals, beliefs and ends--while the rest of the sheeple lap up the bullshit. Kiss the Old Republic goodbye, the Empire is on the rise, and the sheeple are too vegged out to be bothered...

Saturday Dyke March - Sponsored by... Pride Northwest???
It looks like the organizer of the SATURDAY Dyke March is a board member of Pride Northwest, the organization that brings us the HUGE Pride Parade (sponsored by hewlett packard, budweiser, and lots of other fun people!) Here she (Stef-Anie, otherwise known as "The New Lesbian Avengers") is quoted on the Just Out website and makes some errors (ie. the Sunday Dyke March is not organized by Queer Revolution, it is organized by former Lesbian Avengers)... also she refers to organizers as "anti-gay pride" (BAH! unless gay pride = mega corporate $$$ event!) and as creating "infighting" (I guess that queers who don't like rampant consumerism should just shut up and stay home. We're just as bad as the right-wing? give us a break!) Well, enjoy reading this! And come to the SUNDAY Dyke March. And by the way, Stef-Anie, the dyke march never had a corporate sponsor for a reason. It wasn't just some coincidence.

They describe them as 'left-leaning blogs.' Too bad, these are people who are simply interested in the truth. If Clinton were doing it they'd be all over him too. Anyone in office who lies will be exposed on the internet by people who are truthseekers, regardless of political position. The Libertarian sites are all over this too (Evolving Libertarian definition - a conservative who is disgusted with lies).

Walking on Hawthorne Thursday I was offered cake by a group with a huge pig on a stick. They were handing out fliers asking people to call Sen. Wyden about the upcoming(?) vote in the Senate on CAFTA. They explined the situation with CAFTA, how it is similar to NAFTA and serves the interests of the same crowd, and they talked about how the vote hasn't come up because Bush doesn't have the support yet to guarantee its passing.

Rep. John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) The Downing St. Memo was center stage on Capitol Hill, in Washington, DC, on June 16, 2005. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) called a hearing to focus on that leaked document, which shows that President George W. Bush, Jr., and his cohorts, were looking to "cook the intelligence" on the Iraqi War. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) said Bush is "a liar" and it's time to bring the troops home!

Can I say that the right to life is great, but that the quality of life for the average American is borderline pathetic? Sure there are plenty of ways to be un-average. Thankfully. That's what we got I guess. Unique. Peculiar.

Dems' Iraq War Stance Even Less Popular Than Bush's
The least popular option in this poll, viz, sending more troops (10%) which has been least popular since Gallup first asked this question in August, 2003, is the stance of the Democratic leadership! When John Kerry ran for president, he was for sending 40,000 more troops, as was the "anti-war" Howard Dean, and that remains their stance to this day. So the Democratic leadership has managed to adopt a stance on the war less popular than Bush's - quite an achievement

Red Lobster Demo June 25th
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is asking Red Lobster to join the list of companies who have responded to The HSUS' call for a boycott of seafood from Canada until that country's annual slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seals is permanently halted. So far they have refused.

The hunt is undeniably cruel—baby and juvenile seals are clubbed or shot to death primarily for their pelts—many are skinned while still alive and conscious. The U.S. has long banned imports of seal products, but the market for seal pelts in Europe provides an incentive for the sealers to take to the ice every spring to kill as many seals as they can. This year's hunt, with over 300,000 seals slaughtered, was the largest killing of marine mammals in the world.

Meanwhile, back in Congress
Democrats Dennis Kucinich (Ohio) and Neil Abercrombie (Hawaii) have been joined by two populist Republicans - Walter ("freedom fries") Jones (North Carolina) and Ron Paul (Texas) - in introducing legislation to set a time certain for US withdrawal from Iraq. Needless to say, this move is opposed by the White House and by the Republican bosses in the Senate and the House.

That is being reported today:

 link to www.nytimes.com

incidentally as Conyers applies not so subtle pressure to the White House!

From the NYT story: "Representative John Conyers Jr., a Michigan Democrat, was convening a forum today on the so-called Downing Street Memo, a leaked document that appeared to suggest that the White House had made a decision to go to war in the summer of 2002."

Yes, "appeared to suggest" -- let's not go overboard with this!
