Red Cross validates Quran abuses
In an unprecendented move, the International Committee of the Red Cross threw itself in the middle of the Newsweek controversy by public acknowledgment of documented Quran abuse cases. The ICRC says it has credible information that U.S. personnel at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have mistreated the Quran.

NPR reported the story days after Newsweek retracted a story making similar allegations. NPR, of course, must be careful to be "balanced" in their reporting, so the NPR story stressed that they are not validating the specific story cited by Newsweek.

Newsweek, of course, never broke the story anyway: the Newsweek report was basically a report of ICRC, Human Rights Watch and other previously reported stories. (What Newsweek added was that when they checked with the Pentagon, the stories were - at first - confirmed.)

Needless to say, there are other violations just as disturbing that haven't even seen daylight in the press yet. How many people died due to the events reported?

Blackwell loses, voters win
Taken from Barbara Burt's post on CommonBlog:

"An Important Victory: Blackwell Loses in Court"

You may remember that attorney Cliff Arnebeck, a board member of Common Cause Ohio, was threatened with sanctions for his activism concerning the recount effort and other suits related to the November 2nd, 2004, election in Ohio.

We believe that such an action (sanctioning activists for questioning the outcome of an election) would have a chilling effect on others' efforts to raise reasonable doubts about election administration and election validity -- and indeed we believe that was the intent behind the motions for sanctions, which were entered by Attorney General Petro at the official request of Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell.

Therefore, we're glad to know that Blackwell's effort failed. In an email today, Cliff sent us the good news that, "Decisions [were] issued today denying the motions for sanctions in the elections contests we filed."

The Exxon/Mobil seat on the Fifth Circuit
Who has Bush picked to be the poster child for the campaign to eliminate all minority influence on the selection of high court nominations -- why, who but Priscilla Owen, currently a Texas Supreme Court justice? -- that's right, the "try and fry" state of Texas.

There has been a good deal of coverage of Owen's anti-choice stance but her pro-business leanings may be more to the point. In 2003, the Austin-American Statesman declared that Owen could "usually be counted upon in any important case that pitted an individual or group of individuals against business interests to side with business."

Austin-American Statesman: Owen has a questionable ethical tendency to take "campaign contributions from law firms and corporations ... and then, without recusing herself, [rule] in their favor when their cases came before her." Owen's rulings are considered so business-friendly and tainted that a member of the National Employment Lawyers Association once quipped, "In my more cynical moments, I suggest that, just as sports stadiums are now named after corporations, judicial seats are soon to follow. In that vein, I believe that Justice Owen could well fill the Exxon/Mobil or Wal-Mart seat on the Fifth Circuit."

Yeah, here we go: the "Exxon/Mobil seat" on the Fifth Circuit. Personally, I hope the Dems stop this, but I doubt that they will be able to.

Killing embryos to produce stem cells
So, here's the deal: They take an egg from a woman, maybe paying her something for that. Then they take genetic material (DNA, I guess) from someone else. Then they take that DNA and slip it into the egg, first removing the original DNA. Then they let the egg develop into a human embryo. Then, when the developing embryo gets big enough (not really very big at all) that it has a mass of stem cells around it, they take those stem cells and create what they call a "stem cell line" that represents ("is a genetic match for") the person that provided the DNA.

Now, the critics of this procedure look at it like human beings are killed in order to harvest stem cells, because (they believe) human embryos are "our tiniest human beings." There's logic in that thinking. And yet, there's probably millions of such tiny human beings flushed down toilets every day, by women in their periods or whatever.

What I wonder, (among other things), is when was the human being killed? Wasn't it killed when the original DNA was removed from the donated egg? So, the real question, to me, is whether it is okay to take human eggs and do research and experimentation on them.

Some people call it "doing science" -- which they advocate as inevitable, if not always desireable. As an anti-vivsectionist, I am opposed to it.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." ~ The Second Amendment

The citizenry of Washington and Oregon need to create a means of readiness in times of crises. During these days of pending threat whether real or generated by the corporate media Oregonians and Washingtonians need to take the reins and create a volunteer network of defense and recovery. The duty of the National Guards of the two sister states have been taken off from their traditional duties of protection of their states and new proposals to rearrange the American military leaves the Pacific Northwest partically defenseless.

This comes from a business/economics blog -- "bonddad's diary" --

"Fox News Viewership Falls 58% Since Election"

April '05 marks "the sixth consecutive month where FNC declined versus prior month in M-F, primetime P25-54 (every month since Nov '04)," CNN's press release says. The 25-54 demo is coveted by advertisers. One insider called it a "downward spiral." FNC still has more demo viewers than CNN, though (445k vs. 304k in April).

Maybe the American people are smelling the coffee and waking up. Maybe they've finally had enough of the Bush-shit.

Hope some of them are smart enough to tune it all out and check out Indymedia!

Forget the Freedom of Information Act !
FOIA has been gutted by the Supreme Court and the Bush administration!

Unless you've got tons of cash to burn, FOIA's are going bye-bye.

The Bush administration is planning on exploiting a recent Supreme Court decision to prevent filing of FOIA requests. "FOIA" -- the Freedom of Information Act that dates back to the Carter administration and has been a thorn in the side of government/corporate corruption ever since.

FOIA has been the only way that the people have had to gain access to information about what the government has been up to -- from investigation of the JFK assassination, to US government paying propagandists and agents provacateur during the Vietnam war, to the Florida election scandal and the 9/11 investigations. FOIA has also been essential in developing all kinds of investigations relating to damage done by the government to the environment, to workers, veterans, prisoners, to all kinds of people.

Until now, people and organizations who appealed a bureaucrat's withholding of documents requested under the FOIA could have their attorney's fees reimbursed by the federal government if their suit was the "catalyst" for the official to reverse the adverse decision. That was the intent of Congress, back in the day, when FOIA was enacted.

But now, thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court and the Bush administration, beaurocrats can deliberately run up the legal bills, and then stick YOU with them, even if the beaurocrats are the ones responsible for running them up.

Tasers are back!
While watching past protest movies, I noticed what seemed to be the most painful weapon that cops used were tasers. The tasers used by cops are not the regular handheld tasers. These tasers shoot out strings with metal tips and can electrocute people from a far range. In protests, police will not hesitate in the least bit to use tasers. I was thankful that barely any of our police had them, but that is all about to change.

At the beginning of June, it will be REQUIRED that every police officer in Portland must equip a taser. These tasers have sent people to hospitals and can cause serious injury. Police chief Foxworth says that they are 80% effective during protests and that it is a safer, more effective tool. He also said that pepper spray was only 50% effective during protests. One officer added, "When pepper spray is in the air, it will sometimes affect officers".
