Woman's quest to decertify voting system succeeds
Sheila Green of New Sewickley Township was successful in her efforts to have Beaver County stop using its $1.2 million UniLect Corp. Patriot touch-screen voting system. The Times / Lucy Schaly
NEW SEWICKLEY TWP. - Sheila Green said she never wanted to be a crusader against Beaver County's electronic voting system, but county officials just wouldn't heed her warnings.

"I was hoping to save them embarrassment," the New Sewickley Township resident said. "I just met this immense wall of resistance. They weren't hearing me at all."

Security Tightened for Man Accused of Killing Rhode Island Detective
Esteban Carpio, 26 If this black male was and is, suffering from some sort of mental problem, why isn't he in a hospital being evaluated like any other suspect known to be suffering from Mental Problems. This man's family is being denied the right to speak with him. There is something wrong with this case. The cop was shot and killed at the police station, with his own gun, and the suspect was being questioned about a stabbing where the woman was not even killed. Why is this suspect being denied all rights, his family being denied the right to speak with him, he having to wear this mask over his nose and mouth, preventing him from speaking, being beaten and the police claiming that he is luring them into his cell.

The Israeli origins of Bush II's war
In short, the benefits derived by the United States from its Middle East military adventure are highly questionable; but that is easily understood if one recognizes that the policy the Bush II administration has pursued did not originate as one to benefit the interests of the United States but rather to benefit those of Israel, as those interests have been perceived by the Israeli Right.

The Insular America
(from a Derrick Z. Jackson article in The Boston Globe) excellent comments by Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka on the inherent insularity of Americans and their culture.

As an American who has also lived many years in other countries, I've recognized this constantly (even given the pervasive influence of US corporate media consolidation  http://www.corporations.org/media/ on general American ignorance) across the board, no matter what a person's education or 'political' orientation is. While the article contains other comments on the current political regime, to me the crux of it all is summarized in the following two-paragraph excerpt:

AMERICAblog.com has learned that Microsoft is currently paying a $20,000 a month retainer to former Christian Coalition head Ralph Reed's consulting firm Century Strategies. Which now begs the question of whether Reed was in any way involved with Microsoft's recent decision to abandon its decades long support for gay civil rights in order to curry favor with anti-gay bigots of the radical right.

NEW YORK — The worldwide movement to end nuclear weapons, energized and united with the antiwar movement, is converging here for a month of actions. Kicking it off is a May 1 mass "No Nukes! Social Security Update
Will the Republicans abandon their deeply unpopular plan to dismantle THE most popular government program in the history of the U.S.A.? No, of course not. They still believe -- and think that corporate media will convince us -- that Bush has a mandate. EVERYTHING that the Republicans want is what the American people want. So, they won't back down, they'll just put the same thing into a new package.

RECESS - where does Smith stand?
The Senate recessed today at 1:26 p.m., EDT, with Republican senate leader Frist still failing to pull the trigger on the nuclear option prior to the Senate's weeklong recess. Frist had earlier promised to go nuclear before the end of the week -- but it looks like he has "blinked".

The Senate will be back on May 9, but that really means May 10, because Congress generally takes a day to get revved up and going. Janice Rogers Brown and Priscilla Owen got passed out of the Judiciary Committee last week, but the Committee yesterday postponed its scheduled vote on William Pryor. (It appears that the Committee has also postponed scheduled votes on two other judicial nominees -- Brett Kavanaugh and Terrence Boyle.)

Frist clearly had the votes to get Pryor, Boyle, and Kavanaugh out of the Judiciary Committee, since Owen and Brown were confirmed on straight party line votes earlier in the week, but he failed to do so. What does all of this mean?

Progressive Hayden nails DNC on Iraq
It started with Amy Goodman's criticism --

"The chair of the Democratic National Committee Howard Dean has come out in support of President Bush's current Iraq policy." Goodman went on to quote Dean as saying that "a US pullout could endanger the United States."

 http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/04/22/1338244&mode=thread&tid=25

This was about Dean's statement, ("I hope the president is incredibly successful with his policy now that he's there"), that has been dogging Dean since he made it. Here's it is in context --

"The president has created an enormous security problem for the United States where none existed before. But I hope the president is incredibly successful with his policy now that he's there."

A blogger, SusanHu, speculated -- "I wonder if this might be a concerted, strategic effort by Amy and other progressives to put the heat on Dean to shift Democratic posture on the war."

Unfortunately, the individuals who have worked on the inside of various IMCs, reducing the reliability of commmunications within the alternative press, still manage to cloak themselves in secrecy. The solution is to know your local IMC, show up to meetings, ask questions, and follow up on stories that you post.

The problem with the Corporate economy!!
All publicly held corporations live a lie. They believe that we reside in a world where capital has the right to grow and that that right is a higher right than the rights of people to their culture and what we hold in common. There is something incalculably wrong with this view. You can't get to sustainability from an economic model that strives first and foremost to increase the amount of money large corporations have. You can't get there if you're destroying the world's local economies.
