Introduction - the Necessity of Democracy to Our Prosperity
In his book `Growth Fetish', Hamilton sets forth a compelling and radical critique of the ideology of economic growth and its real-world manifestation, consumer society, and attempts to lay the groundwork for a postgrowth society.
This published piece is the full version of a letter written by a local mortician's apprentice regarding the events that took place at Rose City Cemetery and Funeral Home on Fremont St in Portland, OR. The letter was registered with Oregon's Mortuary and Cemetery Board. The events are shocking and true and I hope will let readers understand the type of horror and racism that has gone on their by their General Manager, Mr. Mike Orcutt. A formal investigation is under way as is notices to Portland's African - American Community and other local care centers.
A full article on Portland's Death Care Industry is coming soon! It is entitled: Deep Into Death: How Portland's Death Care Industry Goes Well Beyond Six Feet.
As we have seen in the past, when workers unions take action, it works. But what about the workers union we never hear about, the poor workers union? Even panhandlers should have a workers union and stand up against the classism they have been receiving in Portland. The current condition for the homeless is horrible these days, but what are we doing to stop it?

Just an interesting historical note; I was reading through the history of our county's sheriff's, and thought you guys would find this worth reading.
Noam Chomsky was in Seattle today and appeared as a guest on KUOW FM's
"Weekday," where a caller asked for Chomsky's opinion on peak oil. First, the host Steve Scherr asked the caller to define 'peak oil,' and after the description, Scher said "they should call it 'peaked oil.'"

"Migrants did not only serve Nazis as scapegoats..As the fascists declared the Jews scapegoats, their grand-children today blame foreigners for unemployment and social cuts. Political illiterates are found who fall for these demagogry. We need a literacy campaign.."
The basis for referents and teachers about democracy has shifted, specially during the last five years - the US is no longer an adequate teacher to the rest of the world about anything related to democracy. We must look for emerging examples around the world to lead humanity into this fairly novel idea of "democracy". The people of Quito, Ecuador have given that example during the last 10 days. Our collective hats off to them and a sincere thanks for a timely lesson in democracy as it should be when confronted with absolute corruption and fascism.
Blog forums, you know those quirky little places where you get an idea of what makes a specific group of people "tic"? Visiting the one representing the anti-LNG faction of Warrenton, Oregon, residents makes you think maybe the government might have a good idea where to place these storage tanks.

A week before she was killed by a suicide bomber, humanitarian worker Marla Ruzicka forced military commanders to admit they did keep records of Iraqi civilians killed by US forces. Tommy Franks, the former head of US Central Command, famously said the US army "don't do body counts", despite a requirement to do so by the Geneva Conventions. But in an essay Ms Ruzicka wrote a week before her death on Saturday and published yesterday, the 28-year-old revealed that a Brigadier General told her it was "standard operating procedure" for US troops to file a report when they shoot a non-combatant.

As I type this, a loose coalition of students and workers are gathering on the steps of the courthouse in Santa Cruz County after a successful march through town. Several causes have united to demand a re-alignment of priorities in government spending. They arrived at the courthouse at 1:30 for a rally. Here is a rush post of photos and videos to be followed soon with complete coverage.

CONDI EXPOSED ON RUSSIAN RADIO BY SCHOOL GIRL'S QUESTION
Officially, U.S. Secretary of State Condi Rice is FLUENT in Russian. There's never been any proof or evidence of that claim, but it's been accepted by official sources and corporate media without question. Today in Moscow, the truth willed out. Here's the story, from Reuters, that's loose in Europe -- "Rice's interview on Ekho Moskvy radio turned into a linguistic ordeal when the Soviet expert and former provost of Stanford university fielded a schoolgirl listener's question on how she achieved her career success." ![]()

The Bush Social Security "reform" proposal is so ridiculous, and John Bolton is such a jerk, that you have to wonder: could there be a reason Bush is proposing such stupid things? Maybe they are meant to be outrageous, to keep us ineffectively spinning our wheels while the real dirty business gets done.
The University of California has a long history as the foremost contractor of the US military. As such, it has ample funding and a veil of secrecy. This week, students and faculty left the buildings of the UC Santa Cruz Campus to establish a Tent University. The UC Regents revealed their priorities, which include surveillance, harrassment, and violent oppression of of any who oppose their policies.
The undercover "videocop" at left is an example of how the University of California chooses to spend it's money.

"Lane McCotter, a former Utah Department of Corrections director ...
claimed that Abu Ghraib "is the only place we agreed as a team was truly closest to an American prison." There is ample evidence that prisoner mistreatment occurs commonly in U.S. correctional facilities, not just in proxy prisons placed in occupied territories."

Last week, Donald Rumsfeld made some surprise visits to the middle east, to Azerbaijan on Tuesday April 12, after a visit in Iraq on Monday the 11th when the BBC reported:
The US is worried that officers from the security forces who served under Saddam Hussein may be dismissed... This would seem to indicate a hidden meaning to Rumsfeld's call to acheive democracy and block the insurgency: the insurgency is opposed to the forces that have assasinated most of Moqtada Al-Sadr's nuclear family when he began to present himself as a rival to the Hussein government.
A basic income could heal our fragmented society caught in work fanaticism and work fetishism while work disappears..A basic income could change social attitudes and goals and give real meaning to the human rights to life and participation.
Right next door to the apathy that is almost universal on U.S. campuses, there has been an amazing revival of student activism unseen for decades in Québec. Yet almost no U.S. students will know anything about it because of a virtually complete black-out in mainstream U.S. media--and very little coverage even on U.S. alternative and left-wing sites.
This isn't a story you are likely to get off the U.S. corporate media.
According to Agence France Presse (April 19, 2005) -- "German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican theologian who was elected Pope Benedict XVI, intervened in the 2004 US election campaign ordering bishops to deny communion to abortion rights supporters including presidential candidate John Kerry." Maybe this new pope was a Nazi, or was it only for a while in a brief period of youthful indiscretion? Whatever, he definitely is still a supporter of fascism! It isn't as though the RC Church wants to outlaw abortion but allow birth control contraceptives! No! So, bombing babies is okay, but avoiding babies who are going to be bombed -- that's a sin. And voting for anybody who would tend toward such opinions -- that too is a sin! Why not go ahead and say it -- if ordinary people think for themselves, that's a sin!
Information from a friend...
I was curious as to the symbolic meaning of the term Benedict, and the following is the result of my research. It would appear that the meaning of 'Benedict' is further consolidation and centralization of power in the office of the Papacy, a continuation of the right wing extremism and authoritarianism characteristic of the previous Pope, and perhaps even an implied threat against any more Priests out there who might be involved in sexual scandals
For too long, we have lived with the reality that the many misconceptions and pure deceptions of today's world that we live in is clearly against us, not for us. Fascism is the controlling party. Unfortunately, it's underrated within the minds of everyday people. The enemy's targets are Blacks, other people of color, and proletariats...Comrades, the reason for this rude awakening of clear hypocrisy that has deviously and shrewdly been placed here for ethnic and racial division against the oppressed is the Government's ruse of depriving our natural birthrights and diminish our sense of struggle.
Factions in the new government of Iraq are severely divided over the nature of punishment to be meted out by the Iraqi Special Tribunal when it eventually convenes.
