John Conyers reports on first meeting of election commission
Representative John Conyers (D-Mich) reports on the travesty offered by the Baker-Carter election commission after its first meeting today --

Carter "a very lonely voice of sanity"

The first meeting of the Baker-Carter election commission was disappointing and, at times, outrageous and tainted with racially-charged innuendo. Let me make absolutely clear that I greatly admire former President Jimmy Carter and believe he was insightful and on-target throughout the hearing. However, given the incredible lack of balance and profound lack of good faith demonstrated by some of Carter's fellow commissioners and many of the witnesses at this hearing, at times he seemed to be a very lonely voice of sanity.

The remarks of Mr. James Baker, III, which were echoed by a number of right wing political operatives called as witnesses, seemed to have a singular purpose of spreading hoaxes and conspiracy theories about ineligible Democratic voters being allowed to cast votes. The remedy was cleverly repeated like a broken record, "photo ID, photo ID, photo ID." Right wing pundit John Fund was called as an "expert" witness by the hearing and offered racially charged proposals with racially charged rhetoric.

New Pope bad news for liberal Catholicism
The selection of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as the new Pope is bad news for the liberal currents within global Catholicism. Unless Benedict XVI (as Ratzinger has named himself as Pope) executes a 360 degree turn from his past, those who are developing and practicing so-called "dissident" movements within the Church will find little-to-no traction for official support or recognition from the Vatican.

Especially unsupported, in all likelihood, will be Liberation Theology. This is disappointing, since Liberation Theology is a philosophy that is action-oriented in its advocacy of the poor and its opposition to Capitalism, and which could inspire admiration not only among non-Catholics but even non-Christians (to say nothing of its many Catholic adherents).

Despite the frequent slurs common on this website and within Left circles in general, the world's billion-plus "Christians" cannot be painted with a broad brush as univerally close-minded, conservative, and authoritarian. In the Catholic spectrum, Liberation Theology offers a radical political analysis and prescribes a life based on fundamental change of The System and The Self. Unfortunately, Ratzinger's record reveals his contempt for such concepts.

Urban Myth Exploded! - 9-11, the SEC, and the fake Israeli Money Trail
There is no evidence available to us that the accusations levelled against unknown Israelis by Walter Storch of The Barnes Review are true. There are no SEC press releases, nor are there any mentions of the SEC naming unknown Israeli traders in the three sources suggested by Walter Storch. Therefore we can safely conclude that the Israeli money trail is nothing but an urban myth that has planted itself in cyberspace.

Democrats Must Filibuster, Before It's Too Late
The attacks of the Bush administration against the rule of law have continued far too long, with the elevation of outright criminals to the world stage. Many of them are, in fact, convicted felons from the Iran-Contra era. The US is increasing viewed as a rogue nation, and Bush now seeks to appoint to the UN an ambassador even more controversial than death-squad protector and contragate conspirator John Negroponte.
67 former state department officials have signed a document opposing the nomination of John Bolton for US ambassador to the United Nations

Progressive Democrat 18.04.2005 21:20
Can Progressives be mutually inclusive?
Both many Greens and many progressive Democrats, and probably many others, are discouraged and disgusted about in-fighting along party lines. Sure, Greens are building an alternative party, and that is good, but that shouldn't mean that Greens can't vote for progressive Democrats for office or that progressive Democrats can't vote for Greens.

Then there's ugly stuff like when some Democrats acted unethically to sabotage the convention that was to have gotten Nader on the ballot in Oregon in 2004. That left ALL progressives dismayed and disgusted. Now, when some big labor Democrats reportedly suggested to Nader in 2000 that maybe Nader could tell people, just in Florida, not all over the country, to go ahead and vote for the Democrat -- just the one time -- that was okay, as far as I'm concerned, that they suggested it. What's wrong is if Democrats blame Nader because he didn't do that and then Democrats nurse a grudge over it.

Because, SCREW THE PAST -- we have the future to take care of.

Jesse Jackson, Jr., has called for progressive Democrats to reach out to include progressives outside the Democratic Party. For example, according to CommonDreams (from back in 2000) --

"Jackson has emerged as the leading Democratic advocate for opening the fall presidential debates to make room for Green Party candidate Ralph Nader--introducing a House resolution that urges the Commission on Presidential Debates to include Nader and any other candidate whose participation is supported by a majority of voters polled."

BuzzFlash interviews Riverbend
This is a great interview with a lot of thought provoking material. One thing that struck me were the repeated references to the new emphasis on in Iraq to cultural or ethnic differences being pushed by the US government. "These labels are being promoted by the current new government and the Bush administration and many Iraqis believe they are being used to divide and conquer." I see this focus on labeling prevalent throughout US society for the same purpose and I am glad that some, perhaps many, Iraqis dislike being labeled. Though I find the passage about children coming to understand these newly emphasized differences as chilling. I think we have seen too often what happens when children grow up in poor economic conditions while simultaneously being indoctrinated to the "others" they should hold responsible instead of those who are actually responsible. -- tc

Copied from the Pacific Greens website, this is the letter that Rep. Hooley wrote to Green candidate Mitch Besser before he dropped out of the race against her. Hooley says she will vote against CAFTA "as it is written," but she seems to think the main issue is labor standards. I think the main issue is whether American workers should be forced to compete for their jobs and wage levels against workers in countries with a much lower standard of living. The idea is fundamentally unworkable.

"CAFTA and the Shafta"
"Free traders are stalling, probing for votes, and they don't yet have them. We need your help to continue the crucial fight to defeat CAFTA [Central American Free Trade Agreement]."

From a recent article at IndyBay, "CAFTA Passage Far from Certain" -

 http://www.indybay.org/news/2005/04/1731784.php

Opposition to CAFTA as the centerpiece of the "free trade" agenda extends beyond labor unions to include farmers.

"Our society is becoming increasingly divided into the "two Americas" that Sen. John Edwards made his campaign theme last year in the Democratic presidential primaries.

"The Bush administration has appealed to farmers in the United States, saying that CAFTA will help them by opening foreign markets to their products. But this argument makes no economic sense: U.S. farmers can sell all the corn they want at the world market price; the only way that opening foreign markets can help them is if it raises the world price. Markets in CAFTA countries -- five Central American countries plus the Dominican Republic -- are too small to affect world prices."
